Who is John Barrowman?
John Barrowman grew up in Glasgow and Illinois and maintains dual UK/US citizenship. While he's come to prominence for tv audiences for his initial appearances on the first season of the new Doctor Who series and its spin-off, Torchwood, on which he stars, he was already well known to theatre-goers. He debuted in London's West End in 1989 in Cole Porter's "Anything Goes".
I first heard of him on Doctor Who, of course, and immediately fell in love with him and his character, Captain Jack Harkness, from his very first episode. Torchwood has also eclipsed Doctor Who as my favorite show.
Openly gay, John Barrowman is also on the short list of well-known actors who are out of the closet.

Captain Jack Harkness on Doctor Who
Captain Jack Harkness made his first appearance on Doctor Who in the first season of the new series. He debuted during the 9th episode, The Empty Child, and stayed until the final episode, The Parting of the Ways.He returned to Doctor Who for the final three episodes of season 3, starting with Utopia.
