John Gill (1697-1791) Bible Commentary
Ranked #3,556 in Culture & Society, #78,721 overall
John Gill had zeal and truth in his pen.
He married Elizabeth Megus in 1718. As was still quite common in their day, several of their children died in infancy and another died at the age of thirteen. However, God blessed John and Elizabeth with two surviving children. Elizabeth would be his most trusted friend and love for 46 years of marriage.
He was the first Baptist to write a complete systematic theology and the first to write a verse-by-verse commentary of the entire Bible. Gill wrote so much that he was known as Dr. Voluminous. Tom Nettles writes. "His loss was felt keenly by the whole denomination of Baptists, a group still small and despised ... His outstanding scholarship, zeal for truth and pious polemics had greatly encouraged Baptists ..."
"It is within bounds to say that no man in the eighteenth century was so well versed in the literature and customs of the ancient Jews as John Gill. He has sometimes been called the Doctor John Lightfoot of the Baptists." - William Cathcart

More about John Gill.
1697-1771
John Gill was born in Kettering, England in 1697 and died in London in 1771. He was pastor of the Horselydown Church from 1720 through 1771. Gill was almost entirely self-educated, having only a few years of grammar school in Kettering. He left the grammar school rather than be forced to attend the Anglican Church. He taught himself Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. His Commentary on the Whole Bible, which can still be purchased, was published in the years 1746-1768. He is the only individual to comment on every verse of the Bible. Visit the Baptist Standard Bearer.

- C. H. Spurgeon said this collection of sermons on Song of Solomon was, "The best thing Gill ever did. He could not exhaust his theme, but he went as far as he could towards so doing. - "The historic importance of Roger Williams for Baptists and others in the Free Church tradition has long been recognized . . . Pehaps more than any other figure Roger Williams deserves the title 'America's theologian' because he was the trailblazer for the liberty of conscience, the freedom of religion, and the separation of church and state which became established as distinctively American ideals in history, culture, and law. Yet being widely recognized has not translated into being carefully studied. Many know about him, but few have...

- "In this book, author and historian Dr. Louis Franklin Asher has crafted the definitive biography to date on one of our country's most overlooked colonial pioneers. In the annuals of our nation's history lay the names of many great men who helped forge the foundation of our freedoms. But one name that is often overlooked is that of Dr. John Clarke, physician, lawyer, politician, fighter for religious freedom, and one of the original founders of the Rhode Island colony.
