John Munch The Smart Detective and Conspiracy Theorist

I always wanted TV cross overs when I was a kid. I fantasized about Audra from 'Big Valley' meeting Little Joe from 'Bonanza, among others.

Today in the world of spin offs it isn't unusual for a character to appear on more than one show and in this day of cross promotion, for a character to make a guest appearance on other shows.

The King of this is Detective John Munch originally from Baltimore and now New York, Munch has solved or help solve a lot of crime. Well, into his sixties, he is still going strong long after lesser cops would have just gone fishing.

Three reasons to love John Munch

1. "Munch has been the only fictional character played by a single actor to appear on eight different television shows. These shows were on four different networks: NBC (Homicide: Life on the Street, and Law & Order franchise), FOX (The X-Files, Arrested Development), UPN (The Beat), and HBO (The Wire). His upcoming appearance on Paris enquêtes criminelles will increase the total to nine shows on five networks, with the new network being TF1. An appearance on Law & Order: UK would bring the total to ten shows on six networks, with Law & Order: UK being shown on ITV1. Munch has also been one of the only television characters to cross genres, appearing not only in crime drama series, but also the genres of sitcom (Arrested Development) and horror and science fiction (The X-Files).

A muppet representation of Detective Munch appeared in the Sesame Street sketch "Law and Order: Special Letters Unit". (Wiki)

2. John Munch is a curmudgeonly detective with a soft heart for victims. He is snarky and hard on criminals, sarcastic about marriage, but sometimes sentimental about his many ex-wives.

3. John Much keeps us all abreast of the latest conspiracies.

Richard Belzer And John Munch Solve a Mystery

This is a great book for anyone who likes mysteries, but its a special treat for Law and Order: SVU fans. Its written, by actor Richard Belzer, who plays John Munch. Richard Belzer, not John Munch who solves the mystery. The action takes place in between Belzer's appearances on the set while playing John Munch. It has a noir feel to it and we even get some of Belzer/Munch's conspiracy theories!

Lots of fun, great for a rainy day or the beach!

I love him in SVU, he adds a little "light" to very dark stories.

julcal says:

i have to vote for L&O because that's the one I saw him on most. I don't watch TV, but my husband does. And once in awhile at night i would join him just to relax and L&O would be on. I always, always love to see this guy on the screen. GREAT character.

drifter0658 says:

If I have to choose (dang it!), I'd say SVU. He shown a deeply emotional side at times on that show.

Richard Belzer plays John Munch perfectly, I always like when Much gets a bit more air time. I didn't know he did stand up, another cool tribute Margo!

I also do love this character a lot. It is one of my favorite TV character ever. Very curious to read the book he wrote, I was not even aware he did write. I think I am going to pick this up for my summer reading.

Gotta love Munch. I remember Belzer when all he did was stand-up, and he was aces.

I like this lens based on a fictional character, and once again Margo; you did your homework.

    Thanks!
