Johnny "The matchstick man" Owen was a Welsh boxer who died after suffering injuries in the ring in a world title bid against Lupe Pintor. A fighter until the end, he lasted 46 days in hospital but never regained consciousness. Johnny Owen fought between 1976 and 1980 piling up a record of 25-2-1 (10 KOs) and was Welsh, British, European and Commonwealth bantamweight champion.
