1. Jon Huntsman's tax reform plan will eliminate deductions and credits
He believes deductions and credits "create fiscal uncertainty and hinder America's competitiveness."
His website states: "...he will introduce a revenue-neutral plan that eliminates all deductions and credits in favor of three drastically lower rates of 8%, 14% and 23%. Eliminating deductions and credits in favor of lower marginal rates will yield a simpler and more efficient tax code, decreasing the burden on taxpayers."
2. Jon Huntsman wants to expand free trade between countries.
This gives businesses opportunities in foreign lands.
His website states: "As a former diplomat, trade official, Governor and business executive, I've witnessed firsthand the tremendous economic opportunities of free and fair trade. As President, I will work tirelessly to open more global markets for American businesses."
3. Jon Huntsman wants America to produce more of its own oil.
Currently we buy more than sixty percent of our oil from countries overseas.
His website states: "America can and should produce more oil right here at home. There is no reason drilling cannot be safely conducted in the Gulf, across the states and in Alaska."
4. Jon Huntsman addresses the need for regulatory reform.
Priimary targets: Obamacare, the EPA, and the National Labor Relations Board.
His website states: "Governor Huntsman's regulatory reform consists of three objectives: (1) rolling back President Obama's health care overhaul and financial regulation reform, (2) reining in the Environmental Protection Agency's job-killing regulations, and (3) dramatically improving the cost-benefit analysis of future regulations and the discipline of federal regulatory agencies - particularly independent agencies like the National Labor Relations Board - which have avoided White House oversight for political reasons, not legal ones."
5. Jon Huntsman wants the US to exit Afghanistan...
...but to have Special Forces and intelligence teams remain.
Jon Huntsman suggests that we bring our troops home from Afghanistan but at the same time leave Special Forces and intelligence teams in that country as a conterterrorism strategy to discourage terrorists from reestablishing a base there.
6. Jon Huntsman believes we must increase defensive military presence in the Asia-Pacific area.
This could transform the military to emphasise maritime capabilities.
His website states: "We must also transform our posture and orientation. By almost any objective measure - whether by population, size of economies, size of militaries, or energy use - the center of gravity of human activity is moving toward the Asia-Pacific. We live in the Pacific Century. Our foreign policy, and indeed our defense posture must reflect this."
7. Jon Huntsman supports a stable dollar
...and will appoint Federal Reserve officers who believe in sound money.
His website states: "The main risk to the dollar is that the Federal Reserve will feel empowered to create more money in order to provide bailouts to troubled large firms and deal with the unemployment levels caused by major financial crises."
8. Jon Huntsman wants to end "too big to fail".
He also wants to regulate bank size.
On his website he suggests we "Set a hard cap on bank size based on assets as a percentage of GDP."
9. Jon Huntsman wants to shut down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
He believes these institutions should be reformed.
His website states: "It is unconscionable that five years after the start of the housing crisis, these companies have not seen a serious reform proposal and most of their executives are still in power."
