Who murdered JonBenet Ramsey?

JonBenet Ramsey was a 6 year old beauty queen when she was found murdered in the basement of her home on 26 December 1996, in Boulder, Colorado.

Even now, 12 years on, the police in Boulder, are no closer to finding the cold-hearted killer of this beautiful young girl. Her parents have often been thought of as involved in the case but there has been no rock solid evidence to prove this.

Now, a new investigation has been launched.

Will this case eventually be solved? Or will it be classed as a cold case for yet another 12 years?

Who was JonBenet Ramsey?

A child beauty queen

JonBenét Patricia Ramsey (August 6, 1990 ? December 25, 1996) was an American child beauty pageant queen made famous by her murder and the subsequent media coverage. She was found dead in the basement of her parents' home in Boulder, Colorado, nearly eight hours after she was reported missing.

The case is notable in both its longevity and the media interest it has generated in the United States. After several grand jury hearings, the case is still unsolved. In February 2009, the Boulder Police Department took the case back from the district attorney and re-opened the investigation."Boulder police take back Ramsey case", Colorado Daily, February 2, 2009.

A call to the police was made by Patsy to report that her daughter, JonBenet was missing, at 5.52am.

Patsy had found a ransom note found on the spiral staircase leading to the kitchen.

The ransom note had been written on two and a half pages of paper taken from a notepad found in the house.

Let's answer the burning question straight away: Steve Thomas believes that Patsy Ramsey is responsible for the death of her daughter, JonBenet, Christmas night 1996. As a key member of the team assigned to investigate the murder of the 6-year-old girl, the former detective knows the facts of the case as well as anyone, and the conclusion he draws is convincing and clearly presented. And, as it turns out, his theory about who may be guilty of the crime is just one of the shocking revelations in JonBenet: Inside the Ramsey Murder Investigation.

My thoughts

This (above) is the book I'm currently reading about JonBenet. It does throw up an awful lot of questions about the Ramsey's behaviour. However, I'm aware that it is only one side of the story about the investigation so I'm careful not to draw too many conclusions at this stage.

I have to say that this book hasn't been written with tension in mind. It doesn't make you sit on the edge of the seat and it's not a page turner. It gives you the facts from Steve Thomas' perspective.

His investigation does focus a lot on the Ramsey's behaviour during the months that followed the crime and it's clear that he believes that one if not both of the parents were involved in their daughter's death.

To be quite honest, this book does not make enjoyable reading at all. I'm not in a great hurry to pick it up and finish it. I'm even on the look out for more reading material about the case. Most books have an agenda and this one is no exception. I do think it's incorrectly titled though! It should be entitled 'Why I think the Ramsey's did it' or something similar, rather than 'Inside the Ramsey Murder Investigation'.

The Murder Suspects

Those with motive or opportunity or who are just plain suspicious

John and Patsy Ramsey

JonBenet's parents were the main suspects in the murder of their child. Despite forensics ruling them out as the perpetrators many people still believe they are guilty of the crime. The police ruled them out as suspects in July 2008. John Ramsey still protests his innocence.

Bill McReynolds

Bill had played Santa at the Ramsey's home during their Christmas party. He knew the layout of the house. His wife Janet had written a play about a young girl who was molested, murdered and dumped in the basement of a house. Bill died in 2002. More information can be found here: Family Friends

Gary Oliva

Gary had served time in prison for raping a seven year old. He'd been seen outside the Ramsey's house. One of his friends said that he'd called them and confessed he'd done something terrible to a little girl.

Chris Wolf

Chris was a journalist who'd written about John Ramsey's company. He'd reportedly stormed out of his own house on Christmas Day. He returned home the next day with muddy clothes.

Although those listed here were or are considered suspects, we have to look at whether any or all of them had motive for the crime. Why would JonBenet's parents kill their little girl who they obviously cherished? Why would they commit a crime that would, without a doubt, point the finger of suspicion on themselves?

I believe this crime was undoubtedly committed by someone who knew the family very well which included the layout of the house, the parent's working life and the family's routine. It would need to be someone who JonBenet trusted as there doesn't seem to be any reports of screams or disturbances.

The Mistakes in the Murder Investigation

Boulder police compromised the investigation

When the police arrived at the scene of the crime, they failed to seal it off to the general public.

This led to the crime scene being contaminated and possible vital clues destroyed.

Police failed to search the house. JonBenet Ramsey was not found until the afternoon.

No one thought to stop friends of the family from cleaning the house which included the kitchen.

Vital clues was also destroyed when John Ramsey carried his daughter's body upstairs from the basement.

The coroner didn't arrive at the crime scene until 7 hours after JonBenet's body was found. He then only spent 10 minutes at the scene.

The Boulder police leaked inaccurate information to the press and failed to follow up vital leads.

What is planned and what has been found

A new autopsy could establish if JonBenet was drugged before she was strangled and bludgeoned to death. Tests will be carried out on her hair to test if she had been drugged over a period of time.

Child beauty pageants encourage sexualisation - tiny kids dressed up in ball gowns, coiffured, made-up, swinging their hips to adult music. In an ideal world, they should be stopped.

No way! I would enter my kid for sure!

Mandy says:

Let A Kid Be A Kid!

lola says:

Yeah, but no... Yeah because they show what good talent they have, but no because they look fake no affence jon benet ramsay was a beautiful girl she shud ov NEVER died! I think it SHOULD be banned

Janet says:

they should not be banned, however, these pageants should not let parents go so far over the top. The navel piercings, etc. should not be allowed. It would be fun to be part of a beauty pageant but not the way they are right now.

AHERMITT says:

My daughter did child beauty pageants from the age of (roughly) 9-12. She competed in about 6 pageants and decided to change her focus. As long as it is done tastefully and with respect to the child's desires it is fine. When it is done for the gratification of the parents, it becomes a problem.

Sue says:

Yes. After watching two horrible children Sterling and Paris and their mother said we are going to kill them and the vicious father when he thought his ugly children would not win I saw the look on his face and I thought of Jon Benet. Did they check all the parents who were in the pagents when she won and they lost.

Yes definitely!

sarahrk says:

She was exploited. This is exactly why it's not a good idea to put your child out there, not in the world we live in.

Jul says:

I wouldn't let my daughter be in a beauty pageant unless she would actually want to. It disgusts me to see young girls in make up and wearing prissy dresses.

chels says:

i think they should be banned, it costs way to much money and the poor child never gets to have any fun. the parents make them wear too much makeup and the outfits can be very inappropriate. i would not enter my child into one.

Lola4ever says:

YES, they should be banned. Do you know how many perverts and pedophiles sit in the audience at these shows? What would compelled a grown woman to turn her daughter into essentially a burlesque tease? Sick sick sick! And look at how these stage moms act. This is pure psychological abuse. And these girls turn into ugly drama queens and divas. It's not cute. It's pathetic.

Speak UR mind! says:

Ban the freakin' pageant. Whats so important about seeing a bunch of little girls walkin around in huge hair, gross clothes and dancing to music. Those girls look like bunch of clowns. Where's the circus?!?! This is why so many many teenagers get pregnant because the parents are pressuring their kids to act mature.
