Build a Joomla Website for Dummies

Build a Joomla Website for Dummies

Before I start with the technical things about building a joomla site, I better tell you how to prepare yourself beforehand, so that you dont get stuck in between.

Here goes:

* Plan your joomla site before you start building it. Plan the layout, the templates you are going to use, the categories you are going to have. If you dont plan all this before you start then you will mess up your site and will have to start from scratch again.

*Joomla extensions - What are the joomla extensions that you are going to use. Do you plan to have a wordpress blog too? Will you be needing a discussion forum? A marketplace?
Find out the extensions required for these?
Do you want to build a membership site with joomla?
Maybe, this could help you --

*Joomla Templates - Have you decided on a joomla template yet? Choosing the correct joomla template is very important as it should be able to help you with your project and not become a barrier.
Will you be using adsense on your joomla site? If yes, then your joomla template should be adsense friendly and should already have space for you to put your adsense ads.
If you are looking for free joomla templates then you could go to this site for some amazing free joomla templates ---

*Joomla Hosting -- Can your host handle Joomla properly? Does your host have control panel and fantastico? While a good joomla host could make things running smoothly for you, a bad host could get you into a lot of trouble and make things tough for you to handle.

I will be adding more later on, so bookmark this site now for future use.

What you should know about joomla and Joomla installations.

Here, I am doing it all in a dummies format and so I start by telling you what you should know about joomla in order to have your own joomla site.

So,here are a few questions that you should be able to answer about joomla before you start?
1.Which version of joomla should I download and where to download it?
2.Do I need to unzip joomla before I install it?
3.How do I upload joomla to my host?
4.How do I install joomla on my host?

Now,the installation part is a little more complex. Dont get scared,it wont take you long after you learn how to do it.

For a few lucky ones who can use control panel and fantastico in their control panel, they didnt actually need to read all this . All they need to do is go to fantastico in their control panel and then just install it with one click. Simple!

Brief Summary of Joomla Installations for dummies.

Easiest Way to Install Joomla For Dummies

See,the easiest way to install joomla is by using fantastico provided in your hosting control panel.

But you should be sure that your host has provided you with Cpanel to access the hosting account.

I am assuming that your host provides control panel and fantastico. What is Fantastico? Well,Fantastico is a section of the Cpanel which provides easy access and installations for scripts like wordpress, joomla, wiki, etc.

Now,here's what you need to do to install Joomla:-

Step 1: Log in to your Cpanel with the username and password that your hosting provider gave you.

Step 2: Once you have logged in, look for the link with the "smiley face" right at the bottom of your screen.
Not being able to see the smiley face would mean that your host has set up your Cpanel account with a theme ,such as Blue Lagoon, which does not provide a link to Fantastico. In that case, you better ask your host to change it so that you will abe able to access Fantastico.

Step 3: Go to Content Management, and then select Joomla.

Step 4: On the page that opens, select New Installation. This will take you to a page where you will need to fill in some information on where you want your Joomla installed.

Step 5: If you want to have it installed in the main domain directory, leave the "Install in Directory" field blank otherwise give it a directory name of your choice.

Step 6: Next, type in a username and password you prefer to use to access the Joomla Admin panel. Note down whatever you choose

Step 7: Then fill in your site email address, the Administrator name, and your site name.

Step 8: Now click on "Install Joomla". On clicking it simple instructions will appear on the screen and all you do is follow these instructions.

Step 9:Finally, you will get to theInstallation Successful page, where you will get the link to log in to the joomla admin page. Use the username and password that you have chosen to login to the admin.

That's it. Your have successfully installed joomla on your site!
