Wordpress vs joomla

Being the next step in Web 2.0 technology, the duel of the Content Management Systems (CMS), known as Wordpress and Joomla, is barely beginning, but we are already noticing its effects through the battle between two platforms that technically could be considered the same, since they work with PHP and MySQL, but they have a different user interface.

We are talking, of course, about Wordpress.org and Joomla! Both represent different ways of doing the same thing.

Note that I'm making an emphasis here on Wordpress.org, because is not the same as the blog platform that we know as Wordpress.com

Would you rather use Wordpress or Joomla?

Wordpress without a doubt

TechticSolutions says:

Worpress is best.. as from Techticsolutiona thinking..

MyKitchen says:

I find Wordpress much easier for a newbie

Andy says:

Wordpress in my opinion is superior over Joomla, having developed to a high degree in both I find that the flexibility and admin UI of wordpress is far better for the job.

I find that Joomla documentation is all defined for 1.5 even though there has been significan releases since.

However joomla is the better choice if you want to have session management. it is possible with wordpress, but out of the box with joomla.

I rarely use wordpress as a blogging system, more as a website creation CMS and take full advantage of custom post types and custom taxonomies..

The other side of it is that joomla enforces a way of working at the client end with Mootools, which I hate, gimme JQuery every time, why use #2 when #1 is there. It gets force loaded on every template for ajax, when not all sites use ajax... thanks for slowing my site.

C-technology says:

Wordpress hands down, we use it for out site and it's perfect for our needs. I previously found Joomla confusing and not very user friendly to be honest.

madhu2219 says:

undoubtedly, wordpress!!
simple and easy..

Joomla!!!!11

Michael says:

I am fairly new to web development but having researched both products I have decided to go with Joomla. I feel that out of the two, Wordpress is somewhat lightweight and associated more with amateurish web design.

Enrika says:

Wordpress has Beautiful Themes....but if I want power & flexibility, behind the beauty, I say Joomla.

gradientcat says:

I'm a joomla user, it's more flexible for the websites I make.

ngoletam says:

For blogging I will choose wordpress but for business website I will choose Joomla. Joomla is more difficult to configure but it you are good at coding, you can find it more intersting.

edzsquid says:

Try also Drupal CMS!

What is Wordpress?

Wordpress is a project that has been conceived since 2001 and it has evolved into the blog platform that is today, with all the interactive, dynamic and Google-friendly gadgets that has made it the key platform if you want your content to be indexed in search engines quickly and get almost instant traffic.

Definitely, I think that the best thing about Wordpress.org is the templates. It's easier than Joomla! in the sense that you can only get to choose from so much templates out there, the variety can be almost infinite, with special flash widgets such as slider galleries for your pictures, instant integration with Twitter and Facebook, and of course the trackback and feeds section that guarantee that your content will be seen, whereas with Joomla! it takes an extra effort to promote your site just as it was a regular one.

What is Joomla?

Joomla! has a similar origin in that it started to be developed on 2000, and its great advantage over Wordpress is that it's open source, giving you more liberties and it's 100% free, that's why it has been rapidly growing since last year.

The only issue is that it can be tricky when it comes to more complex development of blogs and sites. In that sense, Wordpress.org can be suited for people that want everything already done for them, barely needing to organize and adjust the content modules.

So far, Joomla! has proven to be more versatile than Wordpress, given that it can be used to create and modify websites of all shapes and sizes, aside from blogs.

With Joomla!, you can create corporate Web sites or portals, corporate intranets and extranets, online magazines, newspapers, and publications, E-commerce and online reservations, government applications, small business Web sites, non-profit and organizational Web sites, community-based portals, school and church Web sites, as well as personal or family homepages.

It's not that a regular site can't be created with Wordpress, but in this case you 'implement' the Wordpress platform to adapt it to your site, which is different. It has been the case of newspapers that used an old format, that used WP to make that big, easy jump to Web 2.0.

But what about Drupal?

Drupal is less known right now, but who knows if it can step ahead both Joomla! and Wordpress, just the same way Twitter has stamped all over Facebook and Myspace, and Hi5...you see a pattern, right?

Drupal is also based on PHP and MySQL, but its very basic and pragmatic structure has made it the preferred CMS for people that look to create a site in Joomla fashion, just without all the complications if the site requires complex pages. If I could have a word to define it, it would be functionality over aesthetics.

Drupal is not fancy at all with templates, but it clearly does the job if you want a simple site to be built easily, without too much mumbo jumbo.

And who says that it can't be improved in the future to beat both Joomla! and Wordpress?

I still think for most purposed Wordpress is just fine. For me, I do not have to pay someone to do it for me! The modern templates make it so easy and the possibilities is endless.

Joomla, for me is my favorite system to use. Around Joomla 1.5, wordpress was using Wordpress version 2 and Joomla definitely reigned over. Wordpress is a blogging platform, so the needs were never met as compared to using Joomla.

Now, checking back on the recent WP achievements, I have to admit Wordpress is quite the competitor now. By using the Custom fields whether via a plugin or hardcoded into a theme, anyone can achieve a quick configurable app using WP.

Wordpress is definitely simpler to understand for most persons, but I find they're downfall is having much of the site dependent on the theme installed.
With Joomla, once you create or install a Plugin, it works with the corresponding component of the site and changing the theme does not render the plugin useless or clash with similar function names. So, I would definitely stick with Joomla.
