Promote Your eCrater Store with your own website using Joomla

This first lens will be about how you post your eCrater store items on your own website. I will cover adding your widget and RSS feeds to articles/content in a Joomla based website.

This tutorial is written using Joomla! 1.5.

The RSS feeds will be in part 2.

Tutorial - How To Add an eCrater Store Widget To Your Website

eCrater Store Widget Tutorial

Visit my eCrater Store

Bricks and Beams eCrater Store
At Bricks and Beams we sell a wide variety of new and used items including Lego Bionicle (New and Used), Lego Star Wars (New and Used), Mega Blok ProBuilder, Vintage Computing (Vintage Software, Games, Computers), Vintage Video Games and Consoles, Collectible Model RR Trains and Sets, and much more.

Step 1 - Get your code for your widget from your eCrater store

Login to your store.

Click on widgets on the left.

Select a widget type. I usually choose Horizontal large.

Choose Flash

You will then see something like the picture above.

Copy the entire contents of the text box below the sample widget.

The easiest way is to click on the inside of the box, right click and select all, and right click and click copy.

You now have the code you need copied to your clipboard.

Visit my website www.BricksandBeams.com to see an example

This site is still very basic and new, but you can see and example of these techniques here.

Next steps -- Adding the code to your Joomla based website

The code we copied from is javascript code. Normally you might just paste your code into your Joomla article using the WYSIWYG editor.

But the the TinyMCE editor built into the default installation of Joomla doesn't like javascript code.

So we first have to your global configuration to 'NO EDITOR'.

To do that, login to you administrator panel as usual.

Click on Site, then Global Configuration.

Make sure you are on the Site section.

You should see something like this:

Change the editor

Click the 'Default WYSIWYG Editor' drop down list.

Choose 'No Editor'

Click 'Save'

This step is very important. You can switch this back when you are finished but this setting must always be set to 'No Editor' when you are editing your eCrater widget article.

If you change it back to WYSIWYG and change anything in the widget article, it won't work correctly anymore.

Go to Article Manager

Click on the Article Manager

Create a NEW Article

Click on the 'New' article button.

Create your eCrater Widget Article

Give your widget article a title. It can be either something descriptive like 'eCrater Widget' or a true title like 'My eCrater Store Items'.

You might want to use the former if you choose to hide the title using the parameters. If you don't hide the title, what you name the article will be displayed above the widget.

Choose the appropriate Section and Category. Also decide whether you want it to be on the front page or not. This is not a full fledged Joomla tutorial, but be aware that the Section and Category determine where this article will be displayed.

Then paste your code into the body of the article.

Click 'Save' and take a look at your work. You should see your eCrater Store widget on the appropriate page.
