Hasay and Babcock - Current and Former high school 1500m record holders

Jordan in high school

From Mission Prep to the record books

"I just didn't worry about the race, because you're going to have to run it anyway, and I didn't think about it until the day of the race. --Jordan on her first USA Junior Cross Country Championship

Prior to entering high school, Jordan twice set the USATF Junior Olympics Youth records in the 1500m and 3000m. In 2004 she 4:34.02 and 9:48.77, respectively. The next year she broke those records with times of 4:28.61 and 9:35.12.

Freshman Year

Jordan lost just two races in her freshman year. The first came in her first cross country race, which she did not finish. After that, she won every race including the 2005 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships in a time of 17:05 (5k), becoming only the second freshman to ever win the race. Her time was the fastest winning time since 2001.

On the track, Jordan won the 3200m race at the 2006 CA State Meet in a time of 10:13.55. She then won the mile race at the 2006 Golden West Invitational in a time of 4:42.21, just .21 off the all time high school freshman mile record of 4:42.0 by Mary Decker in 1973. Jordan lost her second race at the Nike Outdoor Nationals, where she ran 4:42.27 to finish 3rd.

Jordan also won the 3000m race at the 2006 USATF Junior (19-and-under) Championship Track & Field Meet in a time of 9:50.66. Normally the winner of this race would qualify to represent the US at the 2006 World Junior Championships in Beijing, China, but at age 14 Hasay was too young according to IAAF rules.

Jordan was selected by Track & Field News magazine as the 3rd best high school miler, 2nd best high school two-miler, and the 17th best overall girls high school track and field athlete in the United States for 2006.

Sophomore Year

Jordan was one of the favorites to defend her title and win the Footlocker Cross Country meet her sophomore year, but she struggled and finished 10th in 18:05. The winner was another sophomore, Kathy Kroeger. Jordan responded well, however, and won the 2007 USATF Junior Cross Country Championship race (6k) in a time of 21:44. She led from the beginning and won by 14 seconds. This victory qualified her to represent the USA at the 2007 World Cross Country Championships, held in Mombasa, Kenya on March 24, 2007. However, due to concerns raised by a US government terrorism warning about this meet, Jordan declined to participate.

Jordan set the age 15 and HS sophomore class records in the 3200m in her first race on the track in 2007, running a time of 10:04.52. This was also the fastest HS time since 2004. She defended her 3200m title at the 2007 CA State Meet in a time of 10:06.76. She then again won the mile race at the 2007 Golden West Invitational in a time of 4:43.34.

Jordan then went on to win the 1500m race at the 2007 USATF Junior Championships in a meet record time of 4:16.98. At the time, this was the fourth fastest HS 1500 of all-time and the fastest run in 25 years. It is still the fastest ever by a US 15 year-old and the fastest ever by a sophomore.

Jordan won a silver medal in her first international championships, running a 4:17.24 in the 1500m at the 5th IAAF World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic. The gold went to Sammary Cherotich of Kenya, who ran 4:15.47.

Hasay was selected by Track & Field News magazine as both the best high school miler & two-miler in 2007 (the first girls mile/2-mile double winner since Julia Stamps in 1997), and also the 5th best overall (and top sophomore) girls high school track and field athlete in the United States for 2007.

Junior Year

Jordan's junior year saw her run yet another stellar cross country campaign, but she again came up short at the Footlocker Championships, where she placed 3rd in 17:31. She still went on to win the USATF Junior Cross Country Championships (6K) in a time of 20:32 on February 16, 2008. She chose not to compete in the World Cross Country Championships.

At the 2008 CA State Meet, Jordan held off Laurynne Chetelat (Davis HS) to win her third consecutive 3200m title in a meet record of 9:52.13. The time was the second fastest 3200m time all-time for high school girls (with Chetelat's time being #3).

Jordan won the 1500m at the US Junior Championships in a time of 4:18.44, earning a trip to Bydgoszcz, Poland for the Junior World Championships. Jordan then broke the national high school record for 1500m in a semifinal heat at Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon, running 4:14.50. The time was 1.92 seconds better than the record held by Christine Babcock, who was also competing in the race. In the Finals, Jordan finished 10th in 4:17.36.

Jordan finished 4th in the 1500m at the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, running 4:19.02. USA Today then named her the Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

Senior Year

Jordan won her first race of the year, clocking 17:54 at the Atascadero Invitational. She followed that up with a blazing 16:27 to win the Mt. SAC Individual Sweepstakes race, the second fastest time ever on the course. The performance earned her USATF Athlete of the Week honors. She then cruised to victory at the San Luis Obispo County meet, running 17:29 for 5k. She then dominated the Central Section Division V race with a 17:22 to qualify for the State meet.

Jordan won the CA State Cross Country Championship with a time of 17:18. She is only the second person to win 4 state titles, the first being Sara Bei in 1997-2000. She then won her 4th Footlocker West Regional, clocking 18:12 at Mt. SAC. Jordan won the Footlocker Championships in 17:21. She is the first non-consecutive champion in the race's history.

Jordan was named the USATF Youth Athlete of the Year for 2008 due to her amazing performances on the track and her successful cross country campaign. She opened up her outdoor season with a 2-mile at the Nike Indoor Nationals, running 10:10.89. Her outdoor opener was a national leading 4:47.05 1600m at the San Luis Obispo County Meet. She then ran 2:12.64 to win the 800m at the Alisal Invitational. She ran two elite 1500m races, clocking 4:16.80 at the Payton Jordan Invitational and 4:16.92 at the adidas Track Classic.

Jordan won the 800m (2:09.64) and the 3200m (10:30.04) at the Central Section Masters Meet. She then ran 10:05.29 to win her 4th consecutive California State 3200m title. She then won the Golden West Invitational mile in 4:44.28. Jordan was disappointed at the USA Championships as she failed to advance out of her heat in the 1500m, running 4:19.61. She entered the junior 1500m, winning her prelim in 4:28.96 and the junior 1500m title in 4:18.99. She then won a hot and humid Pan-Am Games 1500m in 4:26.26.

I don't get how she stays so relaxed..that's all I do on some races is choke up on the starting line. Jordan how do you stay so calm..other than everyone you go against you beat so you probably aren't scared=/..But I just want to WIN a Big meet and I do all of my training /homework over the summer lol..I rank up to 45-50 miles a week going up a minimuim of 8 hills a day and right now as a senior my LAST year in HS I'm not seeing the results I want like WINNINGG the meets. and it's probably because I usually well don't have a good start but then I catch people and I just choke on the line and I think I'm more of an LONGER LONGER distance person. So for example on a 8-10 mile run I'll feel great and warmed up after 4 miles..can you give me some ideas on how to relax?
