The Arrow Collar Man
During the 1910s and 1920s, J.C. Leyendecker (1874-1951) became famous for his commercial art, the most well known being the Arrow Collar Man.
During the first decade of the 20th century, Joseph Christian (Joe) Leyendecker and his brother, Frank, also an artist, began a lucrative career in advertising art, working with clothiers and apparel manufacturers including Cluett, Peabody & Co., for which Joe created the Arrow Collar Man, the first brand name in advertising.
The model for the Arrow Collar Man was Joe's long-time homosexual lover, Charles Beach. Of course Joe's sexual orientation was quite taboo during this part of history and, thus, was kept "in the closet" although Beach not only managed Joe's business affairs but also his social life, which was quite busy for the famous illustrator during the 1910s and 1920s.

J.C. Leyendecker - The Great American Illustrator
DVD - J.C. Leyendecker was the most successful illustrator of his time, creating over 500 paintings for magazine covers - including 322 for the Saturday Evening Post - and advertisements that made his clients famous. His paintings portrayed a lifestyle that resonated with millions of Americans. Even when depicting those issues that mattered most - a woman's right to vote, the economic woes of the Depression, victory over Nazi Germany - he never employed a heavy hand or a dark mood; his images were always full of human warmth and imagination. Leyendecker told the story of consumerism as if it were lyric poetry; replacing the turbulence of cultural history with a beauteous glance, a beguiling child, a muscular vision, or a gentle hand.
The J. C. Leyendecker Collection: American Illustrators Poster Book

Leyendecker virtually invented the look of the modern magazine cover, introduced a style of mannerism embraces by the whole country, and inspired artists and designers. This book offers first-quality reproductions photographed directly from Leyendecker original works many of which have never before been published.

- I have never heard of this artist before today - but even I have heard of the Arrow Shirt Man and the first brand name in advertising. I must say those chaps in the Kuppenheimer apparel really ARE wearing quality clothes - will you look at the cut of that suit? Not to mention the easy movement in the flannel bags to the left. Excellent quality, like this lens.
