Learning to Follow my Bliss
Joseph Campbell and I
I don't think many people start out planning to be a fantasy artist, I definitely didn't. I've been interested in history, mythology, and folklore since I was a little kid and my plan was to become a historian or anthropologist. This didn't pan out for a number of reasons, none of which was related to any decrease in my interest in the subject. So where does Joseph Campbell come in? Well I was lucky enough to attend the Maine School of Science and Math which is the only magnet school in the state of Maine for a year and a half of highschool. While I was there I took classes on anthropology and mythology. Joseph Campbell was one of my teacher's heros so the class covered some material on him. Later I got a chance to read some of his books and see the series the Power of Myth repeated on PBS. It really stuck with me and of course the most famous thing he said was "follow your bliss".
Once it was clear to me that my future wasn't going to be academic I was sort of lost for a bit. I had always been interested in art and painted and drew, I'd even done a small amount of sculpture. I did some work in creating artwork for computer and cell phone games, tried selling some illustration work unsuccessfully. Then I was bored and had some polymer clay lying around that I'd never used and sculpted a couple heads and loved it. I heard this little voice in my head saying "follow your bliss" and started really learning to sculpt. I've been able to blend my love of sculpting with my love of mythology and folklore and while I'm not quite at the point where I can sculpt fulltime I'm well on my way to that goal.
