What Was Josephine Baker's Paris Like?

Black Paris in the 1920's

Josephine Baker moved to Paris seeking refuge from the racism she faced in the United States. Many artists, musicians, and Black soldiers did the same after World War I, creating the so-called "Harlem in Montmartre."

I took Ricki Stevenson's Black Paris Tour a few years ago, and it remains one of my most memorable experiences in Paris. Stevenson is keeping alive the history of African Americans in Paris. I loved walking in the steps of Josephine Baker's Paris. We saw the theater where "La Revue Negre" debuted, as well as the site of her famous restaurant, Chez Josephine. We learned how Josephine Baker was the toast of Paris, strutting down grand boulevards, dripping with diamonds and furs, with her pet cheetah, Chiquita (with its diamond collar) in tow.

Josephine Baker was many things -- dancer, showgirl, singer and actress, war hero, civil rights activist, and humanitarian. But most of all, she was a born star with a charisma that enchanted all who met her or witnessed her performances. The woman had gumption. She ascended to stardom from humble beginnings, in the process breaking many barriers for women and African Americans. To this day, she remains an iconic figure in Parisian and Black History.
