It's a tree, it's a town, it's an album, it's a National Park!

The Joshua Tree is a multi-talent. First of all, it's a tree - who would have thought? But it's so much more than that. It is also a town of sorts, or more correctly, a "census-designated place". Not quite a real town, but almost. It is also the name of a very successful album by a very successful rock band called U2. And most importantly, it is a spectacular National Park in California.

I invite you to join me in my quest for all things Joshua Tree!

Joshua Tree National Park is located in southeastern California. Declared a U.S. National Park in 1994 when the US Congress passed the California Desert Protection Act (Public Law 103-433), it had previously been a U.S. National Monument since 1936. It includes over 1,234 mi² (3,196 km²) of land. A large part of the park is designated to wilderness area; some 914 mi² (2,367 km²). Straddling the San Bernardino County/Riverside County border, the park includes parts of two deserts, each an ecosystem whose characteristics are determined primarily by elevation. Below 3,000 feet (900 m), the Colorado Desert encompasses the eastern part of the park and features natural gardens of creosote bush, ocotillo, and cholla cactus. The Little San Bernardino Mountains run through the southwest edge of the park.

Some pictures from our Joshua Tree visit in January 2007. The cold, crisp air and the light of the late afternoon sun made for some spectacular shots.

Indian Cove in Joshua Tree

Indian Cove is located 13 miles east of Joshua Tree Village and 10 miles west of Twentynine Palms on the north side of the Wonderland of Rocks. Indian Cove Road dead-ends at this secluded area.

A sprawling campground is enclosed by towering rock formations making the area popular with rock climbers. Many campsites are tucked around the rocks, providing naturalistic tent camping. Other sites offer space for RVs. There is a separate camping area for groups.

Indian Cove is noted for the large number of mature Mojave yuccas and shrubs that grow there. Colorful spring blooms are especially striking against the sand-colored granite rocks.

Here are some pictures from our trip to Indian Cove on the last day of 2008.

It's a city, eh, CDP!

What's a CDP you wonder? A census-designated place (CDP) is a type of place or area identified by the United States Census Bureau for statistical purposes. CDPs are communities that lack separate municipal government, but which otherwise physically resemble incorporated places. CDPs are delineated to provide data for settled concentrations of population that are identifiable by name but are not legally incorporated under the laws of the state in which they are located. The boundaries of a CDP have no legal status.

Joshua Tree is located at 34°7%u203237%u2033N, 116°19%u20327%u2033W (34.126979, -116.318580).

Joshua Tree is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 4,207 at the 2000 census.

It's an Album: The Joshua Tree by U2

The Joshua Tree is the fifth studio album by Irish rock band U2, released 9 March 1987 on Island Records. Recording took place from July to November 1986 at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin. The album features the band's exploration of roots rock, with their music exhibiting influences from blues-rock, folk rock, country music, and gospel music. Lyrically, The Joshua Tree depicts the band's fascination with America, but also its discontent with the foreign policy of the United States. The album was produced and engineered by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois.

The album increased the band's stature "from heroes to superstars," according to Rolling Stone. The album produced several hit singles, including "Where the Streets Have No Name", "With or Without You", and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", all of which remain radio staples. The Joshua Tree won Grammy Awards for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Album of the Year in Grammy Awards of 1988. In 2003, the album was ranked number 26 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". The album is one of the world's best-selling albums of all-time, having sold over 25 million copies. In 2007, a remastered version of the album was released to mark the 20th anniversary of its original release.

Great lens. Never been there, but would love to make it there in the future. Right now, we're concentrating on sections of the Colorado Trail. Thanks for submitting this lens to our backpacking group.

I've seen a lot of these trees on the way to Mountain High in Wrightwood, CA. I always wondered about these, thanks for giving me some background on them. I just finished reading the wikipedia article and it says that they were named by mormons because "The tree's unique shape reminded them of a Biblical story in which Joshua reaches his hands up to the sky in prayer"... interesting. 5*
