The brand new TV show by Buffy and Firefly's Joss Whedon
Joss Whedon's new project is a saucy mix of Buffy, Alias, XXX, and The Bourne Identity.
The new Sci-Fi show is based on the premise of a team of people with special skills, who have had their memories wiped. They are known as "Dolls", and are imprinted with false memories, including muscle memory (a la The Matrix), and personalities for each assignment.
The dolls signed up for five years, knowing that they would get a huge payout at the end of their term, and that their memories of their stint in the Dollhouse would be wiped. What they don't potentially realise is that their assignments could be dangerous and illegal, or potentially abusive.

Dollhouse reviews
- Personality of a Doll
- Beanstockd: "Sadly, Dollhouse lacks the Whedonesque-feel that I've come to know and love on shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly."
- Dollhouse in need of more than a cult following
- Ryan McGee: "I jumped for joy upon learning that Tim Minear wrote tonight's outing of Dollhouse. That man usually brings the awesome. So imagine my disappointment while watching this week's fairly pedestrian episode. Nothing was really wrong, but very little was right, either."
- 'Echoes'
- iF Magazine: "The biggest relief of this week's episode of DOLLHOUSE, appropriately dubbed ?Echoes,? is that last week's unofficial reboot of the series wasn't a fluke.
Joss Whedon single-handedly got the series back on its feet and in the right direction with ?Man on the Street? and this week, the continual evolution of the mythology continues to broaden and expand ? finally giving viewers a reason to want to tune in for the rest of Season 1."

Eliza Dushku as "Echo"
Problems creep in when one of the "dolls", Echo, starts to become aware of something sinister going on and decides to investigate. She wonders about her past, and gradually her real persona begins to surface while she's on assignment and also in front of the heavy surveillance of the Dollhouse.Eliza Dushku starred as Faith in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Apparently a conversation between Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku regarding the nature of identity sparked the initial concept for Dollhouse.
Eliza on her character's storylines: "...they surgically implant cameras into my eyeballs and send me into a cult compound as a blind woman...Then I'm playing a 50-something-year-old woman in my own body in this next episode. There are just so many stories."
Tahmoh Penikett as Paul
Paul is an FBI agent who becomes interested in Echo, an alluring young woman who seems to be a completely different person each time he meets her. Paul starts to investigate the possibilities of a "Dollhouse" - until now just a rumour.Tahmoh Penikett starred as Helo in Battlestar Galactica.
Amy Acker as Dr Claire Sanders
Dr. Claire Sanders is one of the "handlers" who organises the personalities and logistics of the dolls. Early publicity stills confirm that she will be portrayed with facial scarring from an earlier attack.Amy Acker starred as Fred in Angel.
Joss Whedon told Amy about the idea for Dollhouse over lunch and Amy indicated her interest, but initially there was no role for her. However, Whedon later ditched the idea of Claire Sanders being 50-something, and asked Amy if she wanted the part.
Interview with Amy Acker regarding landing her role in Dollhouse.
Dichen Lachman as "Sierra"
Tibetan-Australian actor Dichen Lachman stars as another of the "Dolls", Sierra. The names for the dolls are taken from the NATO phonetic alphabet. "November" and "Victor" are two other dolls mentioned so far.
Dichen played Katya in Neighbours.
Olivia Williams as Adelle DeWitt
Adelle DeWitt is in charge of the Dollhouse. She has recruited people who want to run away from and totally forget their lives for some reason. Adelle seems to have no scruples about what she will let these memory-less dolls be hired to do.Olivia Williams was Dr. Moira MacTaggart in X-Men 3.

Dollhouse according to Joss
Joss Whedon on the premise of Dollhouse
The idea is those with the money or connections can access this secret highly illegal facility where they can basically fulfill their greatest fantasies.
Most people assume that means sex-and on an occasion it does, because that is a lot of people's fantasies-but it's basically scenarios. They can basically reenact scenarios of romance, adventure or anything perfectly, because they become the person that you want them to be-they become that person. They don't act like that person, they are not a robot pretending, they become that person, and then they forget all about it.
The problem is the character of Echo, Eliza Dushku's character, stops forgetting. She doesn't completely remember, but she does realize she is a person, and that she might have been a person before she did this, and she doesn't know what that is.

Dollhouse Hiccups?
Joss Whedon addresses rumours of shutdowns and misunderstandings with Fox
Yes, we've had to make adjustments. Yes, it's been hard and I've been depressing to be around for awhile.
Basically, the Network and I had different ideas about what the tone of the show would be. They bought something somewhat different [to] what I was selling them, which is not that uncommon in this business.
Their desires were not surprising: up the stakes, make the episodes more stand-alone, stop talking about relationships and cut to the chase. Oh, and add a chase. That you can cut to.
Nothing I hadn't heard before on my other shows (apparently my learning curve has no bendy part) but frustrating as hell given our circumstances - a pilot shot, scripts written, everybody marching together/gainfully employed... and then a shutdown. Glad I was for the breathing room, but it's hardly auspicious.
So back into the writer cave I went, wondering why I put up with this when I can make literally dozens of dollars making internet movies. Why I do put up with this is divided into three parts.

Early cancellation rumours?
"We're planning to do one [webisode] for every episode produced. Whether we pull that off remains to be seen."
Update: Fox has indicated that the webisodes are now unlikely to be produced.
And good news for fans already anticipating the early cancellation of Dollhouse, a la Firefly - a confident Joss Whedon had this to say about the ways things are going with Fox:
"FOX understands what it is we're trying to do. I understand clearly what they want. And while there's definitely a back and forth, there's a collaboration. Not just people glaring at each-other.
"I feel really good about how they plan to position it, and their feeling about it as a concept and as a show."
And his comment on the pre-emptive Save-the-Dollhouse campaign was:
I love the effort, but do think it tends to put us in the cheap seats.

in reply to LaurieBeth Yes, I'm very interested in seeing Amy Acker's portrayal in Dollhouse, especially if the rumours are true that her character will have a lot of darker backstory to gradually reveal.
