Journal Your Thoughts and Memories - preserve your past!
Some swear by diaries, others think it is silly, but keeping a journal about your life is such a positive thing to do in life. Whether you journal cherished and wonderful memories, your feelings for closure or just to document your life, or just "chat" to yourself, years down the road, you'll be glad you did. Whether you laugh at it all later or it brings you to tears, keeping track of your life on paper is invaluable. Being able to re-live your experiences...priceless.
Scrapbook Your Memories
You don't have to use just a journal notebook to record your memories!
If you are not a scrapbooker - now you can be! Scrapbooking is a huge cottage industry with unlimited options, but plain and simple...scrapbooking IS memores! With pictures....or not! In this scrapbook page here - my trip to Florida - the ocean shoreline was amazing! But more than the appearance, was what it made me feel. My thoughts as I looked out onto God's creation and the sounds and things going on right in those beautiful waters. How it made me feel, why I was even there in the first place! That is what I journaled about using a computer font. Then I just matted the photos and Ta-Daa!! Instant memories at a glance! I pull this album out often, just for those special memories I journaled about. I also included sea shell chips - just brought home an actual piece of that memory. See.. you can do more in your journal than just write. You can journal with scrapbooking with or without photos! Quick, easy and you don't have to have a ton of time to do it! You can do the journaling free hand or with a fancy computer font. Either way, your memories will be recorded for history!
At age 50, I preserved 45 years of my personal memories and just started writing. I found I had more memories without photos and didn't want to loose them, so I just started writing using a nice computer font. Once done, if I had a photo go to with the memories, I'd use it, but very simply..quick and easy.
Read about this technique here: 45 years of my personal memories and how I organized them. See how easy it is?
This would also be a great way for your child to not only preserve their memories as they are happening, but if done in their own handwritting, 50 years later they will get a nice chuckle from seeing their handwriting at an early age! Also, trust me, 45 years later, although you will have many memories, you have lost or forgotten just as many. Preserving the memories as they happen will make sure they are never forgotten.
Plus, what a great way to encourage your child to read!
Need some help in journaling?
Although it can be just as you think about it...
Journaling can also be structured to accomodate so much more! Sometimes the photo just doesn't say enough! I mean, you have this beautiful photo of the ocean, but what do you say? Well, you can see it is the ocean, but what you SAY about it is how it made you feel, why you stood there staring at it, what it meant to you or why you were there in the first place. Journaling can be more than just "I remember this because..." Put your feelings and thoughts into it!
Where do you find your memories?

Here are some great suggestions for starting out with journaling your memories
You try to remember it all, but of course, some will be forgotten!
So, journal what you remember! If you are scrapbooking, add a photo or two, but make sure you get the memories
- Scrapbook House to House
- When I was young we moved often. Here is an article I wrote about how I scrapbook/journaled about the houses I lived in. It just sat down one day, 30 years AFTER the last move, and brain-stormed my memories from each how.

- Time moves so fast, and things change and change. Here is how to document what happened in the decade you grew up in...do you remember the funny, specific, odd and fad things of your years?
Encourage your Children to Write
Journaling is a great way to practice writting skills, too!
When my grand daughter started the first grade, she loved to write stories. So I got her a first grade lined composition notebook with lines at the bottom and blank at the top. On the way to school every morning, she'd write a story, sometimes true, sometimes not, and then she'd draw a picture to go with it! She'd read back to me what she wrote and I just enjoyed it so much! She was having fun while practicing her writing skills, her spelling, grammer, reading skills and even her thought process! All in one little notebook with lined paper. What a fun way to practice her education, but also, just think of the wonderful memories she is creating for herself.... and all it took was a journal and about 15 minutes in the mornings on the way to school....
Need Help Getting Your Child Started on Their Journal?
Get some ideas on how to start!
Here are some articles that can be helpful in getting your child started with their firt diary. It isn't that hard and they are sure to have fun!
- Diary Writing
- Here's some ideas to start your child with writing in their journal. It doesn't have to be about them or what they did. It can be completely imaginary!
- Write diaries for your children
- Parents keep a diary of your children, for your children! I have been doing this for my grand daughters since before they were born! I write about what they do, what we did together, things they learned and just about the times we had together. I'll give them the girls in the future!
- Encouraging Young Writers
- How can you encourage your children to write? In this article we offer many other ideas for encouraging preschoolers to experiment with writing, for motivating school-age children to write more, and for involving the whole family in writing at home.
Start Your Child with a Fun Diary
A journal is a fun part of education!
Whether it is a "Dear Diary" or just a place for them to write what they did today, keeping a journal is something the kids will love to do! And it helps them practice their handwritting, grammer, sentence structure! They'll be educating themselves and won't even know it while they are having fun!
Start At The Beginning - with a nice Journal!
To get "in the mood" to write, it is fun to choose a special journal book or notebook. IT's just the fun way to start! Choose a notebook that is easy to handle, easy to write in and has pages big enough to get a couple thoughts on before you have to turn the page. My personal preference is 8x10 size and a spiral binding. The spiral makes it very easy to turn the pages and be able to write on the front of the page and the back of the page. You always have a nice, neat "area" to write on and not have to struggle with that extra front or back part of the book. Spiral binding also makes it easy to take the journal with you. Write while in the car, on the bus or lunch break at work, if you want to, and the sprial makes the journal just the perfect size to work with "on the run" or in small places.Journaling is a great way to "get away from it all". Your diary is all yours. What you write is what you want to write.

- Chromedragon...I know what you mean. Sometimes "progress" is not so good! But I still keep my written journal.. as I figure no matter what, people will always be able to read. I have since started on for another reason on the PC Word, but to me that is more troublesome as I have to be at the PC to write. With my journal..I can be anywhere to write whenever I want to. Other than that, we just have to do the best we can with what we have. I will always keep a journal. Plus...word processing softward gets old and can be not recognized b new version so it is lost that way too!
