Labor Can Be A Joy

In The Joy of Working, Denis Waitley and Reni Witt wrote: "When you take responsibility for your thoughts, your work habits, your goals, your life, you'll find you're creating your own horoscope for success. Once you sow the seeds--being true to yourself, taking control, and accepting responsibility--you'll reap a harvest of fulfillment and joy."

There are heart aches for the working man. We must remember the miners and the working soldiers. God bless these men who both have given their lives in providing a living for their families and protecting our country.

There are many joys of labor. It may be the job we go to each day, the taking care of a ill friend or loved one, or our children we brought in to this world via the ultimate of joy of labor - birth. Whatever yours might be, this is the time to rejoice!

Labor Day History

Labor Day: How it Came About; What it Means

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Founder of Labor Day

More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.

Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold." Center for Working Class Studies
The Center for Working-Class Studies (CWCS) at Youngstown State University (YSU) was the first academic program in the U.S. to focus on issues of work and class. CWCS members have been at the forefront of "new working-class studies," an international movement that brings together academics, artists, activists, students, and others who are interested in the history, experiences, stories, and politics of the working class. Started in 1996, the CWCS is housed in YSU's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and closely affiliated with the American Studies Program. The Center offers courses in American Studies, English, History, and Labor Studies, including a four-course graduate certificate and a focus area within the American Studies MA program. Along with two co-directors, Sherry Linkon and John Russo, the Center has twelve faculty affiliates, eight community affiliates, and a full-time administrative assistant, Patty LaPresta. Located in Smith Hall, the CWCS has offices, an art gallery, a library, a classroom, and a computer lab.

Our Mission: To increase awareness of and respect for working-class life and culture through education, the arts, media, and research.

In a nearly hopeless situation, they set out for California's Central Valley along with thousands of other "Okies" in search of land, jobs and dignity.

Union Facts
Union officials have made ending secret ballots for workers deciding whether to join a union their highest legislative priority. Instead of elections, they want a "card check" process that is set up for fraud and is unfair to working Americans. Learn more about the dangers of this union scheme in our new report, "When Voting Isn't Private: The Union Campaign Against Secret Ballot Elections." You'll find out why:

* Union bosses want to end elections, even though they win more than 50% of the time
* Editorial pages from across America are denouncing card check and demanding secret ballot elections
* 75 percent of Americans think secret ballots are the most democratic method of choosing a union
