Joy to the World is one of the most known and loved traditional Christmas carols. The words to this amazing song were written by Isaac Watts, "the father of English hymnody", and the music from the extraordinary George F. Handel.
This is always one of my very favorites during the Christmas season. It is a happy song, celebrating Christ's birth. I love it's emphasis on praise.

The Story of the Song
Where did these words come from?
Joy to the World was first published in Watts 1719 hymnal, Psalms of David Imitated in the Language of the New Testament, and Applied to the Christian State and Worship. In this hymnal, Watts gives the Psalms a New Testament meaning and style. The lyrics to "Joy the World" are a paraphrasing of Psalm 98.Watts gives new meaning by reinterpreting to this Jewish song which rejoices in God's protection and restoration of His chosen people. Psalm 98 anticipates the time when Jehovah will be God of the whole world and Israel's law will be accepted by all the nations, and reinterprets it with the angels announcement of birth of Christ as being a "great joy" to all people.

- I love how your provide the history of Joy to the World, it was always a family favorite and we decided to use it as a congregational hymn at my Dad's memorial service...it took a few years before I could sing along without tears even though I knew Dad was singing in heaven. Blessed!
