What is Judo?

Judo is a Japanese martial art that doubles as a combat sport, originating in Japan in 1882 at the hands of the Japanese educator Dr. Jigoro Kano. Judo means "the gentle way". Judo is a refinement of the ancient martial art of Jujutsu, ancient forms that Dr. Kano studied and took what he considered to be the best of the Jujutsu tecehniques to make what is now modern Judo. The objective of Judo, either as a martial art or as a sport, revolves around the idea of immobilizing your opponent. This is achieved by either throwing one's opponent on the ground, subduing him with a grappling maneuver, or forcing him to submit by way of a joint lock or a choke.

Strikes, as well as weapons, are incorporated as a part of Judo, but these are only seen in the pre-arranged kata forms and are considered "prohibited" in the use of competition or free practice. Judo was introduced into the Olympic Games in 1964.

The Purpose Of Learning Judo

The purpose in learning Judo as is customarily taught by all sensei is the development of character (the cultivation of self-discipline and mastery), mind (the cultivation of patience and so that one may contribute positively to the world) and body (the cultivation of strength and conditioning that one may be able to defend oneself). In a martial aspect, the purpose in Judo is to learn seiryoku zenyo, or "the principle of maximum efficiency"; namely to learn how to use the least amount of effort to achieve the greatest results.

Some Basic Judo Throws

Morote Seoinage (Two Arm Shoulder Throw): The seoi nage is one of the throws most commonly associated with Judo. It is also one of the simplest and the most powerful. For a right side throw, grab with the right hand on the opponent's left collar, grab with the left hand on the opponent's right sleeve at the elbow. Pull both hands forward and upward while stepping into your opponent's intimate zone, then turn your back to the opponent, and bend low at the knees strengthen your center of gravity. Place your right elbow under the opponent's right shoulder and roll him over your right shoulder as you twist hard to the left.

Harai Goshi (Sweeping Hip Throw): This is a counter, and it is necessary for your opponent to have his hand on your collar or lapel. Hold his hand in place with yours. For a right side throw, pivot on the ball of your left foot while positioning your right foot in your opponent's intimate zone and turning your back to your opponent. Close body contact is essential. Wrap your right arm around his shoulders to be able to better leverage him into the throw. Bend over so that your opponent is over your hip, buck your hip up to move him off the ground, and sweep his legs out from under him with your right foot. Complete the throw. Pull with both arms, and twist your head and upper body as you throw them downward.

Summary

Like any other martial art, the goal here is not to be able to kick someone's ass. The primary goal is to master self-discipline, refine your mind, and cultivate character. The secondary goal is self-defense, defense being the keyword here. Judo is great for practitioners of all ages, though if you want to practice it intensively it is recommended that you have healthy joints.
