A Juice Cleanse is..

a short term liquid diet consisting of fruits and vegetables. It benefits health by taking a burden off the digestive process, allowing the body to rejuvenate itself.

Detoxification

Why a juice cleanse is necessary

The diet of the average American unfortunately consists of low intake of fiber, and high intake of fat, processed and refined foods such as meats, sugar, white flour and preservatives. After years of eating such foods, toxins, metabolic wastes, and microorganisms can build up in the body creating obesity, disease, and chronic health conditions.

The main goal of a juice cleanse is to rid the body of built up toxins. By consuming a healthy liquid diet for a short period of time, we allow the digestive organs to rest, thus making it easier for the body to detoxify itself.

Juice Cleanse vs Master Cleanse

A juice cleanse, sometimes referred to as a juice fast, feeds necessary vitamins and nutrients to the body and fortifies it. Most any combination of fruits and vegetables may be consumed during the day. It is consumed in liquid form to ease the digestion process. The body, not being taxed with digestion, is free to focus on detoxification. A thousand calories or more may be consumed this way, therefore the body is not starved.

A master cleanse is essentially a flush of the system. This usually involves a fresh lemonade drink made of lemons, maple syrup (sweetener) and cayenne pepper (an irritant). The lemons, though acidic, actually raise the pH of the body, making it alkaline and more resistant to disease. Cayenne pepper heats up the digestive tract aids in elimination.

How To Get Started

After reading this lens you may be excited to try a juice cleanse, but don't just jump into it tomorrow morning. You'll need a plan, some basic equipment and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Plan on doing your cleanse on a weekend or at a time of low stress and appointments. This will allow you to focus on your body: what it needs and what it's trying to tell you.

Try to get caffeine and alcohol out of your system for a few days before your cleanse to reduce withdrawal systems and ease the detoxification.

One to two days before the cleanse begin to eliminate animal proteins from your diet and add lots of vegetables, especially steamed vegetables which will be easy to digest. This process should also be done in reverse after a juice cleanse, to ease back into a diet of solid food.

For more detailed information about starting a short term juice cleanse, you can read this article.

You'll Need a Juicer

The basic equipment for this is a juicer. There are many on the market, at several different price points. The more expensive ones will have more power and will also produce more juice out of the vegetables. However, a lower end juicer may suit you well if you are just trying this out for the first time.

5 days or less is all I recommend.

more than 5 days is perfectly allright with me.

During a Juice Cleanse

During your cleanse, consume juices throughout the day, even as frequently as every hour. Some recommend that you do not mix fruit with vegetables, while others prefer to mix them for the taste. You'll have to decide which is best for you. In addition to juices, some people also consume clear liquids such as vegetable broth and green tea. Again, you will have to decide this for yourself.
To aid digestion and elimination, you may decide to supplement with enzymes and/or fiber.

My advice is to keep a journal of everything you consume and how you feel/energy levels. Some discomfort is to be expected initially, however, if you experience extreme or prolonged diarrhea or headaches, or if vomiting occurs, seek medical attention.
