Short MP3 History

Bose® SoundDock® Series II digital music system for iPod® - BlackThis is not going to be a long dull history lesson but you might be interested in some details about the history of the mp3 players.

It all started in Germany by a company named Fraunhofer which today also has the patent for the audio technology. A professor at the Erlanger University, Dieter Seitzer, helped with the audio encoding. Karl Heinz Branden Burg is called the "father of mp3" as he was the leading man behind the research that lead to the mp3 players we enjoy of today.

The patent for Germany was created in April 1989 and a US patent was issued in November 1996 for the mp3. 1999 a record company named SubPop started to distribute music in the mp3 format. This was also the first year we could find portable mp3 players.

The name mp3 stands for MPEG Audio Layer 3 and is simply a way to get smaller audio files with almost no loss of sound quality. The first mp3 player meant for the public was made 1990 by Fraunhofer but it wasn't until late 1997 the first successful mp3 player was built by Tomislav Uzelac. The first portable mp3 player was the MPMan F10 and the year was 1998.
