About Julian Casablancas

Julian Fernando Casablancas was born in New York City on August 23, 1978. His parents, ex Miss Denmark Jeanette Christenson and John Casablancas, were divorced when he was around 9.

The first time Julian was drunk was at age 10, when he drank all the drinks on the table at a party. He then realized that being intoxicated was something enjoyed. At the age of 13 he was sent away to a boarding school in Switzerland to help with his drinking problems, which he had already developed at his young age.

Unfortunately, it did not stop his drinking habits, which continued until 2006, when he stopped both drinking and using drugs. He promised himself that he would stop drinking and using drugs when it started affecting his music negatively. He noticed that the drinking and drugs were beginning to affect his music, so he stopped. Recently, when asked if he still drinks, he commented that he still drinks water and soda, but not alcohol.

In 2005 he married Juliet Joslin, the assistant manager of The Strokes. They had a son, Cal, in March of 2010.

Julian's Solo Work

  • Julian released a solo album, Phrazes for the Young, in November of 2009.

  • In 2008 he recorded with Santigold and Pharrell of N*E*R*D, creating a song called "My Drive Thru", and sang it for a promotional video for Converse. Watch the video HERE.

  • Julian was featured in Lonely Island's SNL skit, Boombox in 2009. Since the song is inappropriate for some audiences, I'm not going to post a link to it on this lens.

  • He is also featured in the song Little Girl by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse.

  • Casablancas performed "I Wish it Was Christmas Today" on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on December 21, 2009.
  • Julian Casablancas work with The Strokes

The Strokes- photo from AmazonJulian Casablancas met future bass player, Nikolai Fraiture, while attending Lycée français de New York, meaning The French High School of New York. It was during his brief stay in Switzerland that he met Albert Hammond, Jr., who would later become The Strokes rhythm guitarist. Back in NYC, Julian met guitar player Nick Valensi, and drummer Fabrizio Moretti while attending Dwight School. Dwight School is described as the private school that you were sent to if you were kicked out of all the other schools.

They started a band in 1998. Julian is the main singer/songwriter of The Strokes, and has produced four albums with them. The Strokes announced that they would begin work on another album this April.

    Solo or band?

what's your opinion on The Strokes and Julian's solo career?

If you were to ask me whether I prefer Julian's solo work or his work with The Strokes, I would quickly answer that I favor The Strokes. I think he sings better with The Strokes, and also the music combined as a whole is improved. What do you think?

Do you like Julian's solo or Strokes work better?

I love Julian's solo work! It is way better.

The Strokes music is much superior. You can't have good music without a whole band.

    lovelylashes says:

While Julian's solo album shows a lot of the talent which makes The Strokes great, I think that without the instruments, it's just not the same.

Julian is now representing a men's perfume

Julian's new perfumeOn June 7, 2011, Azzaro Perfume chose Julian to represent their new fragrance, dB Decibel. He also was chosen to compose the music for their advertisement. The scent was announced in Paris on May 16, 2011, and will be arriving to the market in September.

The bottle is shaped like a microphone, with a sleek black glass outer, and silver mesh top.

The new scent is thought to embody rock and rebellion. The symphony of smells combines wisps of aldehydes, Sicilian lemon, and licorice, with a touch of violets, incense, and a light trace of vanilla, vetiver from Haiti and tonka.

I have yet to know how it smells, but from what I've heard, it sounds wonderful!

Most of what I know of him I learned on this lens. I find it hard to imagine a ten year old that likes to get drunk...how sad. Nice lens, though.
