What Are People Saying About The Julie and Julia Book?

When I picked this book from the library on our cruise vacation in the summer of 2009, I could not put it down. That is, until I was forced to return it to the library before we disembarked from our ship. On this page you will find a review of the book and more including information about what other people are saying about the Julie and Julia book.

New hardcover copies have been hard to come by although that appears to be changing as the immense interest in this book drops off. If you want one, you may or may not have to pay a premium for it. However, you do have other options if you want to read the book. You can read it in paperback, listen to it in audiobook form or download it for your Kindle.

Before we get started, let's take a little poll. Have you read Julie & Julia?

The Julie/Julia Project

Nobody here but us servantless American cooks...

"Government drone by day, renegade foodie by night. Too old for theatre, too young for children, and too bitter for anything else, Julie Powell was looking for a challenge. And in the Julie/Julia project she found it. Risking her marriage, her job, and her cats' well-being, she has signed on for a deranged assignment.

365 days. 536 recipes. One girl and a crappy outer borough kitchen.
How far will it go? We can only wait. And wait. And wait...
The Julie/Julia Project. Coming soon to a computer terminal near you."

Julie Powell had calves brains on the stove and cucumbers on the cutting board as she spoke about her blog, the Julie/Julie Project. Her dare to herself late last summer was to keep an open journal for one year as she cooked every recipe in Julia Childs'classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Thousands of readers are panting with her now as she races to the finish. This is a personal blog lifted by wit and style toward real writing and performance art, not to mention fame and fortune.
Julie and Julia -- The Book
I was book shopping in our local Borders and came across Julie and Julia : 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen by Julie Powell. When I picked up the book, I was not familiar with Julie Powell's story and about the premise for this book...

"This is an engaging, intelligent, and funny story of a young woman who takes on a self-imposed challenge of cooking her way through Julia Child's classic, Mastering The Art of French Cooking. It made me laugh out loud. If you've ever been accused of being too hard on yourself, whether or not you're interested in French cooking, you'll love Julie, and gain a warm acceptance for the Julie in you." ~~ Chapters

Interview with Julie & Julia Author, Julie Powell

"On the eve of my thirtieth birthday, stuck in a dead-end secretarial job, living in a hideous apartment in Long Island City, Queens, and dreading what seemed like a life of terminal mediocrity, I came up with a panicked notion - to cook through all 524 recipes of Julia Child's Mastering The Art of French Cooking, in a year, and blog about it. Julie and Julia describes my efforts to hold on to my job, marriage, and sanity while blazing a nonsensical trail toward fulfillment, with Julia leading the way." ~~ Julie Powell

The Folks At Goodreads Review Julie & Julia

"Although I have Vol. One & Two of MtAoFC, I would never have considered doing what Julie Powell did much less in one year. Loved reading about her, her husband and friends and the considerable trials she went through! Her honesty was at once appalling and refreshing." ~~ Diane

"I loved this laugh out loud book! I can't wait for the movie to come out, although I'm sure it won't do the book justice." ~~ Vanessa

"Julie & Julia was funny. Really funny. I don't usually do a lot of laughing out loud at books, and I did so several times with this one. I appreciated how candid Julie is in her writing. She writes frankly about things - wearing a corset to fit into some of her clothes, kind of enjoying killing lobsters, her sex life - that others may have omitted. It was refreshing, hopeful, and cute." ~~ Noisy Penguin

"Julie Powell thought cooking her way through Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking was the craziest thing she'd ever do--until she embarked on the voyage recounted in her new memoir, CLEAVING.

Her marriage challenged by an insane, irresistible love affair, Julie decides to leave town and immerse herself in a new obsession: butchery. She finds her way to Fleischer's, a butcher shop where she buries herself in the details of food. She learns how to break down a side of beef and French a rack of ribs--tough, physical work that only sometimes distracts her from thoughts of afternoon trysts.

The camaraderie at Fleischer's leads Julie to search out fellow butchers around the world--from South America to Europe to Africa. At the end of her odyssey, she has learned a new art and perhaps even mastered her unruly heart.
