This classic Le Creuset 5 1/2 quart dutch oven is the perfect size. There is the cute oval size and a size smaller and a size larger. But for even heating and to fit a whole chicken, the 5 1/2 quart size is perfect.
Any larger, remember it's cast iron enamel, so this cookware is pretty heavy even empty and with liquids or broths the 7 quart size gets a bit heavy, unwieldy and awkward to lift. The smaller size is a tad too small to fit a pork roast or roaster size chicken and even though the oval shape is visually appealing it leads to uneven heating on a round stove element.
So if there's only one Le Creuset piece of cookware you buy, friends who cook agree this is the one to get. It's available in cherry red, flame orange, kiwi lime green, dune sand color, dijon bright yellow, cobalt deep blue or a bright caribbean blue.

I loved the story of Julie Powell, office drone, blogging her way out of a cubicle existence taking inspiration from Julia Child. What could be hard about cooking one recipe a day? A great book to read in the New Year about making resolutions and sticking to them especially when the going gets tough. The book's a fun, easy read.

- A couple of years ago I read Julia Child's autobiography about her life in France and it was really wonderful. She is a fascinating woman. I've been wanting to see this movie for a while and your lens makes me want to see it even more. Blessed by an Angel.
