Born Julia Mary Walters in Smethwick, West Midlands, the daughter of Mary Bridget (née O'Brien) and Thomas Walters, a builder and decorator. Julie attended Holly Lodge Grammar School for Girls in Smethwick.

After being 'asked' to leave school at the end of her lower sixth because of her 'high jinks', Julie Walters worked for a year in various jobs before training as a nurse at the age of 18 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. Julie later decided to give up her nursing career to become an actress and live with her boyfriend in Manchester where she studied English and Drama at Manchester Polytechnic.

Julie Walters first achieved fame as the occasional partner of comedienne Victoria Wood, whom she had met in Manchester. The two first worked together in the 1978 theatre revue In At The Death, followed by the television adaptation of Wood's play Talent. They went on to appear in their own Granada Television series, Wood and Walters, in 1982. They have continued to perform together frequently over the years.

Since then Julie has gone on to become one of Britains finest actresses, starring in many movies and television shows and winning numerous awards.

Julie was also appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1999 and Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours for her services to drama.

Why I Think Julie Walters Is One Of The Best

Julie Walters is the all round entertainer

I've always been a big fan of Julie Walters right from the early TV years when she collaborated with Victoria Wood, bringing us such wonderfully funny characters as the Nations' favourite cleaner 'Mrs Overall' in the sketch 'Acorn Antiques'. Mrs Overall was just one of the many characters that Julie played so well.

Julie Walters is a fantastic character actress and has played many roles both on TV and in films, including the Harry Potter movies and of course most recently in the hit musical Mamma Mia starring alongside the likes of Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth.

No matter what she has done Julie Walters has always kept me entertained, whether it be laughing or crying and sometimes both at the same time!

Thats Another Story By Julie Walters

Julie Walters Tells Her Story In Her Autobiography

Julie Walters autobiography is a riveting read from beginning to end. The story starts with her birth and progresses through her life, revealing, amongst other things, how she was sexually assaulted at the age of 10 by a paedophile who tried to abduct her, her breakthrough into acting and why she prefers playing older characters.

It is a really good read which I thoroughly recommend.

I've read quite a few autobiographies in my time and this is one certainly of the best I have ever read. Julie Walters' Autobiography kept me enthralled from the start.
Not just a brilliant actress, Julie Walters is also a very talented, vibrant, interesting and honest writer. She has a way of describing things and engaging the reader that will often make you laugh out loud or burst into tears!

Julie Walters Is A Great Comedienne

Julie has a great sense of comedy and timing and her sketches whilst working with Victoria Wood are still classics!

Along with Victoria Wood she is probably one of the finest comediennes and best character actresses in the UK today.

Julie Walters Plays An Aged Waitress In The Classic Sketch 'Two Soups'

Celia Imrie and Duncan Preston appear alongside Julie Walters in Two Soups

This has to be my absolute favourite sketch!

In my mind Julie will always be remembered for her 'Two Soups'. She doesn't even have to say much, her movement and timing has you laughing almost before any words are spoken.

Julie Walters Stars In Controversial Assisted Suicide Drama

A Short Stay In Switzerland

This TV drama aired in the UK on the BBC in January 2009. It is a very moving drama which provoked many thoughts and debates.
Inspired by the true story of Dr Anne Turner, Julie brilliantly plays a doctor who travels to Switzerland to take her own life in a Zurich clinic because it is illegal in Britain.
Dr Turner watched her husband die from a neurological disease and was herself, shortly afterwards, diagnosed with a similar incurable illness - progressive supranuclear palsy.
A Short Stay in Switzerland shows Dr Turner's struggle to cope with her illness and her steady decline, to the point where she could no longer walk or swallow and struggled even to speak.
Dr Turner's children are initially horrified by their mother's decision to end her life but come to respect it after she fails in a suicide attempt using paracetamol and a plastic bag. Her children were by her side when she takes the lethal mix of barbiturates that ended her life.

Julie said :
"I think the subject should be debated. I just felt that more by the end of filming. I felt that for Anne it was absolutely the right thing to do.
"She was an intelligent informed articulate woman who knew exactly what she was doing. I thought it was a very courageous act."
"It was difficult playing someone who was in constant pain. Having to cry constantly was really, really difficult.
"The scene I found most challenging was the one when she had to say goodbye to her children.
"I read that part of the script only once and put it down. I couldn't read it again. I just could not imagine having to do it."

Writer Frank McGuinness said: "I don't believe this is an endorsement (of assisted suicide). I hope that sufficient doubt comes through. But this woman had the astonishing courage to face death and that is what she chose and we have to respect that choice."

Was at school with Julie ' 61-68 and remember her particularly in athletics where she was a brilliant runner. I had forgotten about her school antics so found the schooldays section of her book hilarious and an eye opener. I must get my old school photos out and see if she is there.
