Publishers Weekly: Powell became an Internet celebrity with her 2004 blog chronicling her yearlong odyssey of cooking every recipe in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. A frustrated secretary in New York City, Powell embarked on "the Julie/Julia project" to find a sense of direction, and both the cooking and the writing quickly became all-consuming.
Some passages in the book are taken verbatim from the blog, but Powell expands on her experience and gives generous background about her personal life: her doting husband, wacky friends, evil co-workers. She also includes some comments from her "bleaders" (blog readers), who formed an enthusiastic support base. Powell never met Julia Child (who died last year), but the venerable chef's spirit is present throughout, and Powell imaginatively reconstructs episodes from Child's life in the 1940s. Her writing is feisty and unrestrained, especially as she details killing lobsters, tackling marrowbones and cooking late into the night.
Occasionally the diarist instinct overwhelms the generally tight structure and Powell goes on unrelated tangents, but her voice is endearing enough that readers will quickly forgive such lapses. Both home cooks and devotees of Bridget Jones-style dishing will be caught up in Powell's funny, sharp-tongued but generous writing.

Julie and Julia -- the Movie!
Julie & Julia is a comedy-drama film written and directed by Nora Ephron. The film depicts events in the life of chef Julia Child in the early years in her culinary career, contrasting her life with Julie Powell, who aspires to cook all 524 recipes from Child's cookbook during a single year, a challenge she described on her popular blog that would make her a published author.
Ephron's screenplay is adapted from two books: My Life in France, Child's autobiography, written with Alex Prud'homme, and a memoir by Julie Powell. In August 2002, Powell started documenting online her daily experiences cooking each of the 524 recipes in Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and she later began reworking that blog, The Julie/Julia Project. The Julie/Julia Project Both of these books were written and published in the same time frame of 2004 to 2006. The film is the first major motion picture based on a blog.Philadelphia Weekly
Ephron began filming Julie & Julia in March 2008. Meryl Streep portrays Julia Child, and Amy Adams appears as Julie Powell. The film officially premiered on July 30, 2009 at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City and opened throughout North America on August 7, 2009. Meryl Streep and Amy Adams previously starred together in the critically acclaimed Doubt.

- My youngest son (who lives in NY) and I just returned home from the movie Julie & Julia and LOVED IT from start to finish! A 'foodie' myself, I could totally relate to the entire story! Having an extremely supportive husband, I loved the 'behind the scenes' of what a couple endures while plodding through a growth spurt. An internet junkie as well, couldn't help but wildly surf through wikipedia sites for all the details of the lives of Julia, Julie, and of course everyone who has anything to do with the making of the film/book etc.......Grew up with Julia's cooking and antics... I found her amusing and loved her show! The Saturday Night skit with Dan Akroyd, of course, hilarious...then and now! Laughed out loud at the theatre and on the way home remembering how Julia actually took a liking to the skit herself. So, Julie, kudos to your get up and go attitude along with the 'guts' to be yourself, just like Julia! Where do we find you now? Jody in Wisconsin

- What I like about Julie Powell is that she shows what a bit of honest graft and properly placed self belief can achieve. Thanks for telling me more about Julie and Julia. Looks like I will have to go and see the film.
