Natural Born Killers
One of my favorite Juliette Lewis Movies
Natural Born Killers is a twisted movie, filled with violence and I loved it. It's one of my favorite Juliette Lewis movies. You can grab it at Amazon new for less than 3 bucks or used for under $1.00!
I'm not the only one who loved it though...
"Natural Born Killers" is not about glorifying violence; it's a chilling parody of the American fascination with violence. The quick changes from color to black and white and back again, interspersed with animated sequences, point up the satiric nature of the movie. Mickey and Mallory, very well played by Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis, are two killing machines without heart or soul or conscience; their only redeeming virtues are their love for each other. They aren't meant to be sympathetic characters and they're not, but Oliver Stone's direction makes them pale in depravity besides some of the other characters -- the sadistic warden, the despicable detective and his morbid fascination with Mallory, Mallory's nauseating, sexually abusive father, and above all, Robert Downey's superb characterization of the media pimp who feeds off blood and gore. The last scene in the movie, of Mickey and Mallory on the road with their two children, and Mallory about to deliver a third at any minute, underscores the whole message of the film; violence feeds on itself and begets yet more violence. Those viewers who were most upset by the movie missed its message. "Natural Born Killers" is a brilliant, disturbing depiction of the shallowness of American culture at the end of the 20th century.
Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers" is not just a movie, it is an experience. It is a wild, dark ride that serves as a study of today's culture and it's fascination with violence. This movie is not so much about the killers, but about how the killers capture the public. The screenplay is masterfully structured with moments of vicious rage, deepness, dark comedy and powerful visual images. The film is hypnotically watchable due to the great mixing of different film formats, camera angles, colors and the breathtaking cinematography of Robert Richardson. "Natural Born Killers" is a great study of where our culture is going. Stone is a genius of cinema, one of the greatest directors there has ever been. This movie is effective, provocative, feverish and driven. It's electrifying. In fact, it's not as violent as you may think it is. It's the break neck speed it goes at and it's intense feeling. "Natural Born Killers" is both intense and brilliantly nightmarish. It's disturbing, as it should be. This serves as a slap on America's face, to wake it up. "Natural Born Killers" is a masterpiece, as Roger Ebert said: "Seeing this movie once is not enough."
Natural Born Killers
The Other Sister
The Other Sister couldn't be farther away from Natural Born Killers ~ it is a touching, sweet story of two mentally challenged individuals trying to make their way through a relationship as they fall in love.Great price on Amazon ~ New: Under $6.00 Used: Under $6.00
Here's what other's thought:
THE OTHER SISTER is one of those films that becomes a staple in the home library. With every viewing the tenderness and good qualities just improve. Though the film industry is dealing more often with the mentally challenged these days (I AM SAM, RADIO, etc) few can equal the tender love story that is created by Juliet Lewis and Giovanni Ribisi. The family setup is well paced with the skills of Diane Keaton and Tom Skerritt et al and other issues confronting the modern traditional family are certainly touched upon - obsession with public appearances, coping with a challenged child, teaching sex education, the presence of a gay sibling, to mention only a few. But it is the overwhelmingly fine performances by Lewis and Ribisi that are of the quality of commitment that seeing them on repeated viewings just fortifies the brilliance of their acting. These two people are people we readily love and grow to feel their fears, pain, frustration, and dreams. If ever there was a film that was able to read from the inside of the minds of the mentally challenged and find the mysteries and honest simplicities there, then this is the film. An outstanding cast and a very fine director in Garry Marshall make this movie a keeper.
Oh my goodness, what an awesome movie. I was at wrk one night and this girl was talking about this movie. It sound interesting. Thank God for iPhones, before she could finish her conversation, I said- I just bought it, it's on the way to my home. I must say it got there quick. It is good all the way thru. My only problm is.... I have not seen the ending yet. About the last 20mins cause I don't want the movie to end. I am so silly, but that's how good it is. Buy it, you'll be glad u did.

Too Young To Die
a true story
Juliette takes a chance with this true story movie. It is a gritty film, that tells more about our society than many of us would like to see. This is one of Juliette and Brad Pitt's earlier films, and their chemistry is fantastic.Great price at Amazon: Under $8.00 Used: Under $1.00!
Here's some reviews from Amazon:
I viewed this movie several years ago and found it absolutely powerful. As an advocate/speaker on the issue of child prostitution, I found the actors portraying realistic and convincing roles. Sexual abuse, abandonment and exploitation are just a few of the issues presented in this video. Sexual abuse and exploitation of young girls is not a issue that can be under-estimated. The actors took risks and great courage to present a very dark and complex issue in our society today.
I thought that this film was a wake up call to older people to what is actually happening to young girls around the country, its real life and its happening. it also could help the people that this sort of treatment is happening to,and they are not the only ones suffering. i thought this film was really good. it made me cry.

My Louisiana Sky

This provoking drama is set in rural Louisiana in the early 1950's. A 12-year-old girl(Kelsey Keel) has been forced to come to grips with the fact her parents are developmentally disabled. The family is held together by the girl's grandmother (Shirley Knight). Rich Aunt Dorie (Juliette Lewis)comes home to try and ease the family's woes.Tiger Ann (Kelsey Keel), a tomboy in 1950s Louisiana, has an upturned nose and the husky voice of a young Kathleen Turner. She lives in the country with her parents.
Her 12-year-old life appears to be perfect. It isn't. Her mother and father are "slow" and her grandmother can be bossy (though she's the engine that keeps the household running). To make matters worse, the townspeople aren't as understanding of her family's differences as Tiger has been taught to be of theirs. After Jewel passes away, Tiger's already precarious world is turned upside down and she finds herself longing for the glamorous city life of Aunt Dorie Kay (Juliette Lewis). My Louisiana Sky was directed by Adam Arkin (Chicago Hope) and movingly depicts the difference between the love of family (however messy) and the desire for approval (however lonely).

I don't know where to begin but this movie is going to be a new classic for kids...move over Sounder, Anne of Green Gables, Treasure Island....I was entranced. The actors in the movie are fabulous... I found myself making comments aloud about their acting throughout the film. The themes are timeless and ones in which we can all relate. The costumes are wonderful...I was taken back in time and couldn't leave my TV to even get a drink and I studied every detail of the dresses, hair, shoes, and makeup. If you think history is boring, watch this movie...it all will change for you and you'll realize that we all aren't so different afterall.
I Love this movie and ordered a gift copy to my sister who still lives in a small Louisiana town. You probably have to be a Southernor to appreciate all the nuances in this movie. For instance, no one actually refers to Aunt Dora as a prostitute, but it is alluded to in text and body language, the Southern way. To be fully aware, keep on your toes and observe to catch all the implications. Remember, most folks did not have a big income, a car, and they were not merchandise junkies, yet. I lived during this time and I found this movie to be authentic and factual including the food bounty at this country home, the friendships of both races, the love of the outdoors. Enjoy!
Hysterical Blindness
Juliette Lewis and Uma Thurman!

Uma Thurman and Juliette Lewis, two of today's most sensational actresses, tackle what it was to be single in the 80's in a new movie with a terrific 80's soundtrack. It's 1987 in Bayonne, New Jersey. The bars are full and smoky and Debby (Thurman) and Beth (Lewis) are out looking for a good time. Debby is searching for the kind of love they sing about in songs, the kind that lasts forever. What she can't see is that most guys are only looking for a love that lasts one night.

Reviews:
This movie was unsettling and hard to watch...I mean that in the best way. Uma Thurman in particular was so pathetic, so clueless and vulnerable....just desperate for acceptance...it was hearbreaking. Watching her character feign happiness and mold herself and her ideals to whatever man happened to be paying attention to her at the moment had me riveted. I have never been so impressed with Uma Thurman...FABULOUS STORY...watch it.
I just cannot understand how this movie didn't get critically acclaimed. It is an amazing piece. At times cringingly reminiscent of my own mistakes in my youth, but an extraodinary script and the most amazing acting story.
It is about two women, 'pushing thirty' as it says in the blurb above. The difference here is that they have never grown up into adult relationships, they are searching for something which they think is an adult relationship, but searching in the same places, the bar the have always gone to. The men are all just the same, and everything is towards a casual one night stand.
It is set in the mid 1980's, the hair is Jersey-big, the jeans skinny stretch stove pipes and the accents nasal whines. But Juliette Lewis and Uma thurmas utterly pin their characters down. They are helped along but an extraodinary script and great direction. The neediness Uma Thurman's character, at once picky and judging, the next whining and needy, and then in another moment, coquettishly naive. I am not normally a fan of Juliette Lewis but she absolutely takes this character, the lost dreamer, and makes it her own. She is almost stifled by her need to help Uma's character, and support her own daughter, that her own life becomes crushed (willingly it seems) beneath everything else.
I bought the DVD in the end because I found it so powerful and multilayered that I wanted to see it a few more times and watch the extraodinary relationships and subtle subtexts of the movie.
If you want to watch something that really show cases these talents, and yet does it without grandstanding you will enjoy this. It is very much a story of hope, and if nothing else it has a great 80's sound track!

- I also became a fan after Natural Born Killers, which is my all-time favorite movie. I have a lens about the soundtrack, which is very good too, especially because it has audio clips from the movie so it's like watching the movie again. Very nice work on this lens.

- NBK is one of my all time favorites, but I also really liked her in Cape Fear, with Robert De Niro. That was a remake that was at least as good as the original movie.
