In the middle of June 1776 a secret committee of 5 men Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Addams, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston set out to revise the "Lee Resolution for Independence". Urged on by the other members Thomas Jefferson began writing the document. With Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin helping edit and revise the Declaration of independence was written. On July 1st at a secret meeting in Philadelphia 12 of the 13 representatives voted to submit it to full Continental Congress. Over the next two days Thomas Jefferson worked through the night rewriting and incorporating revisions and with the help of Benjamin Franklin and John Adams the document was presented before the full congress on the morning of July 4th. At just after 11am the church bells rang out in Philadelphia, and the Declaration of Independence was signed. Over 200 years later the Declaration of independence has stood the test of time, and with some revisions over the years it has endured.
Today July 4th also known as Independence Day is a day celebration with family and friends. Across the country there are parades, parties, bar-b-ques, baseball games, car races and eating contests. When twightlight comes all eyes look skyward in anticipation of the fireworks displays that will soon follow
