The Story of America's Birthday

This little board book for children uses only 200 words that convey the story of the Declaration of Independence, the Revoluntionary War, and the freedom that was the result.

It tells why we celebrate July 4th as America's Birthday.

Send them a Calling Card!

Calling Cards Through Designated Donation Program

Beware of purchasing calling cards domestically if you plan to send them to troops overseas. The minutes you purchase are converted during the call and can be a dissapointment. The following information, from The U.S. Department of Defense, will allow you to donate phone cards to troops without having to worry about your gift.

Also, you can donate comissary gift certificates so that servicemembers may make purchases on base commissaries.

For more information visit the Defense Link Military Website.

IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 363-04
April 23, 2004

Military Phone Card Donation Program Goes Public!

The Department of Defense announced today that any American can now help troops in contingency operations call home. The Defense Department has authorized the Armed Services Exchanges to sell prepaid calling cards to any individual or organization that wishes to purchase cards for troops who are deployed. The Help Our Troops Call Home program is designed to help servicemembers call home from Operations Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

For those wishing to donate a prepaid calling card to a military member may log on to any of the three Armed Services Exchange web sites:

Army and Air Force Exchange Service

Navy Exchange Service Command

Marine Corps Exchange

*Click the Help Our Troops Call Home link. From there, a prepaid calling card may be purchased for an individual at his or her deployed address or to any service member deployed or hospitalized. The Armed Services Exchanges will distribute cards donated to any service member through the American Red Cross, Air Force Aid Society and the Fisher House Foundation.

The Armed Services Exchanges operate telephone call centers in Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, and other countries and aboard ships -- anywhere servicemembers are deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. All of these locations stay busy around the clock to keep up communication between deployed troops and their loved ones. The cards available through the Help Our Troops Call Home program offer the best value for calls made from the call centers, never expire, and there are no added charges or connection fees.

Individuals and organizations also can show their support to deployed troops and their families with gift certificates. The Gift of Groceries program allows anyone to purchase commissary gift certificates at
Gift of Groceries Program or by calling toll free 1 (877) 770-GIFT. The Armed Services Exchanges offer the Gift From the Homefront gift certificate for merchandise at these exchange web sites:
Armed Services Gift from the Homefront
and
Navy Gift from the Homefront
or by calling toll free 1 (877) 770-GIFT.

Gift certificates may be purchased to be mailed to servicemembers and family members or will be distributed to any servicemember. Only authorized commissary and exchange patrons may redeem the gift certificates at military commissaries and exchanges, including those stores supporting deployed personnel around the globe.

The Colors of The Flag - What do they mean?

From the book "Our Flag" published in 1989 by the House of Representatives...

"On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress passed a resolution authorizing a committee to devise a seal for the United States of America. This mission, designed to reflect the Founding Fathers' beliefs, values, and sovereignty of the new Nation, did not become a reality until June 20, 1782. In heraldic devices, such as seals, each element has a specific meaning. Even colors have specific meanings. The colors red, white, and blue did not have meanings for The Stars and Stripes when it was adopted in 1777. However, the colors in the Great Seal did have specific meanings. Charles Thompson, Secretary of the Continental Congress, reporting to Congress on the Seal, stated:

"The colors of the pales (the vertical stripes) are those used in the flag of the United States of America; White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & valour, and Blue, the color of the Chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice."

Also this from a book about the flag published in 1977 by the House of Representatives...

"The star is a symbol of the heavens and the divine goal to which man has aspired from time immemorial; the stripe is symbolic of the rays of light emanating from the sun."

The quote below concerning gold fringe on the Flag is from the book "So Proudly We Hail, The History of the United States Flag" Smithsonian Institute Press 1981, by Wiliam R. Furlong and Byron McCandless.

"The placing of a fringe on Our Flag is optional with the person of organization, and no Act of Congress or Executive Order either prohibits the practice, according to the Institute of Hearaldry. Fringe is used on indoor flags only, as fringe on flags on outdoor flags would deteriorate rapidly. The fringe on a Flag is considered and 'honorable enrichment only', and its official use by the US Army dates from 1895.. A 1925 Attorney General's Opinion states: 'the fringe does not appear to be regarded as an integral part of the Flag, and its presence cannot be said to constitute an unauthorized addition to the design prescribed by statute. An external fringe is to be distinguished from letters, words, or emblematic designs printed or superimposed upon the body of the flag itself.

Under law, such additions might be open to objection as unauthorized; but the same is not necessarily true of the fringe.'"

The gold trim is generally used on ceremonial indoor flags that are used for special services and is believed to have been first used in a military setting. It has no specific significance that I have ever run across, and its (gold trim) use is in compliance with applicable flag codes and laws.

At our last party we had so much fun we couldn't wait to do it all again. I had a photo booth (for snapshots of everyone), there was a fishing booth (real fishing poles-NO Hooks, with toys on the other side of the shower curtain), we even had a ring toss with huge bottles of soda.

We also had...

Homemade or Storebought Ice Cream?

Ice Cream!

Everyone loves Ice Cream!

But...
Should we make it at home, or buy it from the store?

Which do You Prefer?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Homemade

PatinKC says:

Give me homemade chocolate! mmmmm! Much more healthy!!Doesn't have all those chemicals in it.

familystorykeeper says:

Storebought is easier, but it can be fun to make your own ice cream. There are recipes for making ice cream in a bag and in a can. They are simple and are fun ways to make homemade ice cream.

Storebought

spirituality says:

Unless you really know what you're doing - I prefer store bought icecream. More hygienic, and tastes better too.

About Me

I am an artist. My artwork and photo art can be seen on my lens GypsyOwl's CafePress Showcase Artwork , photography, and photo art designs have been created at the following galleries. GypsyOwl's Studio & Gifts - CafePress And GypsyOwl's Gallery - Zazzle My Photography is also available through 123RF - Royalty Free Photos

I am the founder of a networking community for small business, I manage multiple online forums, networking sites, and I am creating website content as well as graphic design. Visit my lens GypsyOwl Organization Small Business Network to learn more about the SBN.

My past work is primarily in The Mental Health related field. I worked as a para-professional Therapist Technician Team Leader in a Residential Crisis Stabilization Unit. Funding changes in the industry left me and most of the para-professional direct care providers without jobs. I have spent my working life in fields that allowed me to learn a lot about a variety of topics. I have been a house manager in a domestic violence shelter, a second hand shop manager (for charity services that provided shelter to the homeless), and a variety of experiences both for pay and volunteer.

I have worked with children and adults in a variety of settings (educational, recreational, health & wellness, and spiritual growth). I am enrolled in the Jones International University BBA Degree program - Marketing Management, Global Marketing Stategies, and E-Commerce are my focus. I am an adult student preparing myself for a career change. I have completed 3/4 of the requirements for graduation.

Each step of the way I find my interests expanding. It is clear that my new knowledge and skills will benefit any area I set my mind to. I am a member of The SARK International Creative Dream Team. I am a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. I enjoy music, gardening and reading. I am enthusiastic about everything that I do and every day is an opportunity to learn. I mentor women in various transitional living communities. This volunteer activity has been extraordinarily rewarding for me.

But For The Grace Of God There Go I

I believe that one of the most interesting things about me is that I have found myself being a volunteer liaison in every job or volunteer position I have been in throughout my life. Support in life seems to come from so many different areas of interest. People who have similar ideas, talents, professions, families, backgrounds, experiences, challenges and other points of commonality find enrichment in their lives by connecting with one another. Perhaps I am evolving through this kind of work because I find such satisfaction in watching people have those "I am not alone in this" moments. No matter what the challenges in life, there are people who are going through, or have gone through similar things, and connecting them can manifest great sources of growth and insight.
