Shrimps in the Ocean - Shrimp Salad, Shrimp Cocktail, Shrimps on the Barbeque!
Shrimps may have a reputation for being tiny, weak little things, but in the marine world, they not only play an important role in marine ecology, they also are formidable fighters. No, really. If you don't believe me, just stick your fingers under a rock on a tropical coral reef--such as those found around Hawaii, Guam or Palau! (Well, if a moray eel, sea snake, shark, stonefish, or sting-ray doesn't get you, perhaps you'll lose a finger to a mantis shrimp.) There are video clips below to help explain this point.

Shrimp Links! (No, they aren't sausages! Just links to Shrimp News!)
- When Harlequin Shrimp Attack!
- Yup. Like I said, they might be perceived as "little weak guys".. but these shrimps are feisty and can throw up some cool defenses (and look cool at the same time). Check out this blog with the beautiful pictures of a pair of harlequin shrimp!
- University of Guam Marine Laboratory
- This is the official website for the University of Guam Marine Laboratory--A place where I studied and worked for more than 5 years. With some of the most diverse ocean life, Guam was a perfect place to study marine biology. Beautiful coral reefs, warm tropical water, and a paradise island to boot! Check out this lens to understand why I miss the shrimp barbeques on the island!
Time for Shrimp Dinner (the fixin's here!) and a Movie!
Let's see... how to prepare shrimp for dinner?
- Shrimp Cocktail--this is an obvious one that comes to mind ... where you have nicely cooked shrimp tails (de-shelled) arranged nicely on a platter or on the edge of a cup and you have tomato/horse-radish dipping sauce to dip them in before savoring the delicacy!
- Chinese Stir-fry Shrimp with Snow Peas--in a small frying pan or wok, stir-fry fresh de-shelled shrimp tails and snow peas in soy sauce with a touch of ginger.... serve with rice.
- Shrimp Sushi--roll some sushi rice (which is rice prepared with some Aji-mirin cooking wine), and then lay a nice "butterflyed" shrimp tail over it. Make a bunch of them --two to four of these per person makes a delectable meal.
- Shrimp Seafood Pizza--make a regular pizza... you know, with the flattened dough, the tomato sauce, and the cheeses, then sprinkle de-shelled shrimp tails over the top before baking the pizza. If you add imitation crab meat and scallops, you get a "seafood pizza" that's out of this world!

More Shrimp than Those Little Pinkish Things at the Supermarket Seafood Section
Just a few of the varieties described here... there are so many more--as shown in the picture module that follows this text module!
- Mantis shrimp--These are the meanest, baddest critters in the crustacean world and that live under rocks and in holes and openings in the underwater environment. With their two front pincers, they can deliver a formidable strike that can stun fish, disable crabs, break mollusc shells, and snap off fingers of careless humans.
- Cleaner shrimp--These sometimes almost translucent, red-and-white-striped shrimp set up "cleaning stations" around coral reefs and rock outcroppings. Larger fish--who could eat the shrimps if they wanted to--will patiently wait in line (and take a number?) to have the shrimps crawl inside their mouths and through their gills and all over them for the shrimps to pick off any parasites that might be latched on there. A risky business, but it works.
- Pistol shrimp--These shrimp have modified front pincers that can shoot a burst of water at such a high rate that it's similar to a water-cannon. As a weapon, this works well in blowing away any opponents and most predators.
- Deepwater shrimp--These shrimp live in the depths from 1000 to 3000 feet and grow quite large (compared to shallower waters). They have been under investigation on Guam as a harvestable food source.
