Salmon River Rafting

So what is it like to go on a rafting trip in Idaho?

We'll take you on a short adventure trip here in this lens.

First you gather at the river with your river guides and they fill you in on basic river safety and boat selection. If you are in a paddle raft you will be taught how to follow your guide to paddle the boat in the right direction, how to edge into a rapid, and how to have a lot of fun!

Then everyone checks their life jackets, personal gear is stored aboard the boats, and everyone clamors in.

At first the river is calm and everyone gets a chance to get used to the boat and handling the oars. You might pull over at a lovely beach... or climb up the cliff at Boyscout Rock into the deep waters of a calm section of the Salmon River.

Then hang on to your hat (and double check that life jacket) cause we are going to hit some rapids! At first you see it coming, and it doesn't look like so much. Just a bit of whitewater ahead... and the WOW! You hit the waves and bounce all over getting splashed and laughing hard.

Finally the day is done and you gobble down your home cooked meal, having the best day of your life.

The Salmon River

A Wild and Scenic River

The Salmon River is located in Central Idaho. It runs along the west slope of the Continental Divide with it's headwaters to the southeast of Stanley.

The Salmon River runs from Stanley down through an amazing canyon, past the open high desert town of Challis, and through another beautiful canyon to Salmon Idaho. From Salmon it heads due north to North Fork where it takes a sharp turn westward in into the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness area.

One of the amazing things about rafting on the Salmon River is that this river is a Wild and Scenic River protected from alteration and damming by Congress. So this is one of the few rivers in the United States that has a 100% natural flow. The river never goes up and down with water being let out of a dam. Instead it follows the natural flow of the seasons with a great spring runoff. A great river for rafting.
