Juneau, Alaska -- Capitol of the Largest U.S. State

Ranked #5,821 in Travel & Places, #163,583 overall

After seeing the magnificent beauty and wildlife of Alaska, you won't call this state Seward's Folly!

Glaciers, wildlife, logging, fisheries, canneries, hunting, and tourism.... make for an interesting combination to create a unique Alaskan economy. It seems to a visitor that EVERYTHING in the state is huge! The state is larger than Texas (the second largest state in the U.S.), but so much more so.

Steep mountains rise from Juneau's coastal area in its fjord to an amazing view of the harbor on one side and the Canadian Yukon on the other side. In fact, Juneau is the ONLY U.S. state capitol that borders a foreign country.

There's more to this amazing state capitol ... please enjoy this Squidoo lens and have fun exploring the information here.

There's a wide variety of things to see and do in Juneau, Alaska!

When you are in Juneau, you may be caught with a bear behind! When you first land in Juneau (yeah, I said "land" ... you sure can't drive there!), there will be a lot of things that present themselves to you. If you come by ship -- cruise ship -- the piers are seemingly in downtown Juneau. If you aren't lucky enough to have your ship pulled up at a pier, your ship may anchor in the harbor and you'll have to take the tenders (small ferry boats) in to shore. At shore near the embarkation point, you have the Red Dog Saloon and the Juneau Public Library and Parking Garage directly across from each other on Manila Square (Seems like there's a large Filipino community in Juneau -- the Philippine community has their own gathering hall on the main street through Juneau just a bit uphill from Manila Square.) Most of the shops clustered around the piers are directly related to the cruise ship lines that bring millions of tourists to the city during the April through September tourist season. But if you get off the beaten path and away from the docks and piers, you can find more of the local stores, markets, and trading posts that will be more of a cultural and local experience.

Since there isn't much road going out of Juneau, it's fairly easy to do a walking tour of Juneau ... my wife and I were able to hike from the Red Dog Saloon and the cruise ship pier areas up the street to the St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church and past a chocolate shop, native trading posts and galleries, Russian crafts and gift shops, and numerous other pubs, restaurants, and tourist spots like a zip-line establishment and some tour companies. In the same area where we walked, we were able to see the governor's mansion and the Alaskan Capitol Building.
