All Creatures Have Their own Mating Habits and Some are Very Interesting and a Little Strange

Have you ever wondered about the mating habits of the animals? Have you ever wondered where all of the birds and the bees and hundreds of other animals that you might see every day come from? You might not give it much thought but every creature from the tiniest (the male Parasitic Wasp-10mm long) to the largest (the female Blue Whale-80' and 100 tons) must mate to carry on the species and stay in existence. If they don't, they become non-existent (EXTINCT)!! With many of these creatures there is love involved but with others it's just the instinct to mate and there is no commitment. Some animals are monogamous while others have many partners. But whether they kiss or kill their mate...whether they look so very cute together (check out the pic) or become a scary tangled mess, all of them, including the human race, have urges and instincts to "do it".

Disclaimer up front.

This lens is not intended to be offensive or vulgar in any way. When my wife developed an interest in photographing different creatures mating in our back yard or the woods or the beach, I was wondering what to do with these photos so I thought I'd share. Then I began to do some research and found that animals mate and love in many interesting and sometimes very strange ways. I thought that putting a little humorous spin on the subject would make it less offensive. Please enjoy and as always, comments are welcome and encouraged.

Some animals have very strange and sometimes downright scary mating habits...

Check out some of the bizarre and sometimes downright scary mating rituals of creatures big and small...

The Bonobo Monkeys may very well be the envy of most humans. Mating for a Bonobo is as casual as a smile for a human. Or a handshake, a wink or clearing your throat. It is used as a greeting, as a method of conflict resolution and to celebrate when food has been found.
They are the only species that's been observed mating face to face besides humans.

Brown Antechinus (kind of a mousy looking critter)
The male of the species known as Antechinus Stuartii is so into mating, he will do it until he rolls over and dies. During mating season, this little Australian marsupial pretty much drops everything in his life to mate with as many females as possible. There's no time to even eat as he will spend up to 12 hours at a time with one female. And when he's done, it's on to another female. By the time mating season has ended, he has a suppressed immune system, severe ulcers and many parasites. He will then die.

Hippos are disgusting when it comes to mating. When the male hippo has found a female that he thinks is ready to mate, he positions himself where she can see him. Then he defacates himself. He also urinates at the same time. He then spins his tail like a propeller causing it all to spray the entire area. This both marks his territory and arouses the female. We won't go any further.

White-fronted Parrots. This is one of the very few species besides humans that engage in kissing. When they initiate mating, they snuggle up together and kiss, which isn't easy when you have "beaks." This would be very romantic except that when the male senses that the female is responding, the next step involves vomit.. .We won't go here, either.

The Female Praying Mantis often bites off her partner's head during mating.

We could go on but you get the idea. Not all mating is fun and games.

So, you're still wondering if we mean ALL creatures....

Just FYI

We might not want to mate the way a lot of these animals do but there are some that we could learn a thing or two from......
Some other creatures that mate for life: Gibbons (who are the nearest to humans that find life-long partners), Black Vultures, Wolves, Prarie Voles, Termites and even the American Bald Eagle!
