Heaven Gives One, What One Hates

This lens stems from my carelessness, namely my letting myself be led into a gamble that I do not foresee all the probabilities. Because of my professed dislike for Boys Love (abbreviation BL, a.k.a romance between two males), I proudly accept the bet to watch the newest BL anime, with the condition that if it has more than 60% of what on my checklist of stereotypes about this genre, I will not have to hear about BL stuffs from my perverted obsessed friends anymore. But if it is not, I will have to do a proper promotion for the series in this anime sanctuary of mine. Well, here I am submitting my skills and intellects to the dark side, so you know the result (truth be told, I find myself liking it). Because of the cognitive dissonance (i.e. I-hate-the-fact-that-I-cannot-hate-what-I-want-to-hate), you will find abuse of CAPS, blatant plagiarism and various unrestrained expressions here. Enough ranting, the business begins.

Warning: If your tolerance for BL (and entertainment concerning homosexuality) by any chance lower than mine, please spare yourselves (and others) the annoyance by navigating away from this lens. In addition, while I try to keep the content of my lens as innocent as possible, I have no control over the sites it links to. Besides, despite its name ("junjou" means "pure hearted") and the overflowing appearance of cute things like teddy bear and rubber duck, this series is still a show aired at midnight in Japan, just to give you an impression.

Why I Am Like the Parliament, Who Says No But Does Yes

I complain a lot, but I still create this lens for this show which I want to hate. That is because objectively speaking, this anime is quite good. Here are some points I really like about it.
  • Animation: Animation-wise, this is one of the best anime I have seen: decent character designs, sweet colour theme (a bit too cheesy for my taste, but scarily appropriate for the content), adequate attention to details, and smooth actions. It may be because this is a romance, not an action show, so there is less complicated scene to execute. But a plus is a plus.
  • Music: I absolutely LOVE the music for Junjou Romantica so this is the part I´m totally willing to do. It is sweet and truly enhance the feelings for each scene. To be honest, because of the music, there were moments I was swept away by what I was watching. The Junjou Romantica OST CD is what I want to have for Christmas this year.
  • Story execution: Controversial sexual orientation aside, this show is a successful romance-comedy anime, far better than some normal comedy romance shows I have seen (to be fair, I am not into that type that much anyway). It strikes a pretty good balance between drama and humour, so that it remains light-hearted entertainment without straying into the realm of pure stupidity.
  • The titles: I really want to know who names the episodes because that person´s wit simply shines. The titles are mostly proverbs/colloquials (both Japanese and international) aptly chosen and sometimes twisted a bit for the content of each episode. For example, the first episode´s title is ¨Truth is stranger than fiction¨ alluding to the occupation of one of the main character (a novelist), the awful first impressions the two lovers have of each other, and the unlikelihood of falling for someone of the same gender.
  • Explicit content (or the lack thereof): One of the reasons I lose my bet. Ironically, it is also one of the reason I am not totally opposed to creating a lens for Junjou Romantica. BL is infamous for the gratuitous sex (the main reason I so hate it. I mean the sex, not the homosexuality), and sexual content is not absent in this series. However, those scenes are just implied, and executed quite discreetly. So if one is not an extreme homophobe, this anime is still watchable.
  • The seiyuus: I must admit, the seiyuus did a damn good job in this show. It is scary how their voice acting suits the characters and the situations to the core. That´s professional for you.

Where Spoiler Tag Does Not Even Need To Be Mentioned

According to the experts, the anime is based on the same titled manga series (which I heard is much more spicy). And it has not only one but THREE storylines following three couples (each of them is given a nickname, namely Romantica, Egoist, and Terrorist). The three stories are independent and their time-frames are not parallel (one story can take place earlier than the other in the anime´s universe), but the characters are related to each other in one way or another (e.g. friends, colleagues, etc). The episodes switch from story to story without warning, which can be really confusing if you do not have an expert beside to help you (in my case, the devils I call friends). There is one side story (called Minimum) about the childhood of two of the main characters (it is ¨safe¨ and quite adorable).

More details on the characters are below. The order of the name (left to right) is the same as the images. The name order is East Asian (family name - first name).

Usami Akihiko - Takahashi Misaki

The ¨Romantica¨ Pair

¨Usami¨Misaki The comedy couple. Their story is filled with awkward interactions and ridiculous situations. While there is nothing really special about the Romantica story, it is cute enough to watch. Usami Akihiko (affectionately called ¨Usagi¨ i.e. ¨bunny¨ by his friend Takahiro and his lover Misaki) is a successful novelist who has won several prestigious awards. He is almost an ideal man: born and bred in an elite family, talented (for one of his awards, he is the youngest recipient), and good-looking. The trade-off is that he has ZERO social skills and ability to take care of himself properly (the eggs explode when he tries to boil them). Usami´s little, good-natured and a bit dense lover (I´d rather call the poor boy his toy) Misaki is the younger brother of his friend (and unrequited crush) Takahiro. The two of them constantly clash and attract, namely Usami sexually harassing and teasing Misaki (but guiding the boy through complexities of adult life) while Misaki badmouthing (sometimes including violence) the older man (but taking care of Usami i.e. cooking and doing all kinds of nameless domestic chores plus keeping the temperamental novelist´s actions in check). The comedy lies in Misaki´s antics (mainly about his inability to cope with the fact that he falls in love with a same-sex person), and Usami´s senseless actions.

Kamijou Hiroki - Kusama Nowaki

The ¨Egoist¨ Pair

¨Kamijou¨¨Nowaki¨ The angsty and emotional couple. They are also my favourite because their story is somehow believable (and my personality is quite close to that of Kamijou´s). They also have the longest relationship out of the three couples (more than 6 years) although their love-life is rather stormy. Kamijou Hiroki is Usami´s childhood friend, and the associate professor of Literature in Misaki´s university. He is intelligent (being at the top of his class in a prestigious university, and becoming associate professor at the age of 28) but extremely short-tempered, and does not shy from treating those who incur his anger with bad language and violence (his students call him ¨the devil Kamijou¨, and that is self-explanatory). What he is shy about is letting others see his tender and emotional side (though in reality, he is not very good at hiding that), especially when the person is his love Kusama Nowaki. This Nowaki guy can be called an ideal lover: calm and patient enough to see the sweetness hidden in his partner´s unreasonableness (and deal with the guy´s violent manners), yet passionate to obtain and maintain what he wishes for. Thus he is Kamijou´s antithesis (althoug he does let Kamijou have the upper hand most of the time). His only weakness is his lack of confidence at the face of his lover´s many achievements (although he is talented by his own rights, being able to enter medical school despite having to provide for himself at early age). All their troubles stem from Kamijou´s overwhelming pride (hence the name ¨Egoist¨ of their story), and Nowaki´s fear of showing his inferiority-complex and insecurities (which is also egoistic in a way). It is really moving to see them struggle with their own personalities and learn to tolerate their partners´ weakness to find happiness together. I must admit, their romance is one of the most romantic story I have ever seen *shocked at myself for saying this*.

A Letter of Nowaki to Kamijou (Scan and translation by wednesday_10_00 at LiveJournal. It appears by the end of Ep.6, season 1)

Dear Hiro-san,

Hello. It's gotten pretty cold here, how are things there? I've gotten used to things here and am doing well, but lately this feeling of missing you has grown so strong, I can't help but laugh at myself.

I miss you. I think about what it that I'm lacking, and it doesn't have to do with school, or that I'm not satisfied with my daily life here. I've realized that just missing you is what's making me so anxious.

But I'm still so far behind that I can't even see you, so I know this is no time to whine. So I won't send this letter now, but I'll work hard so that someday I'll be equal to you, and I'll be able to show you this letter.

Actually, before I left Japan, I secretly took a picture of you while you were sleeping. I look at it every day. It's the only thing that keeps me going. I love how you look when you're asleep. If you found out about it, I'm sure you'd hit me, so I'll keep it to myself. I'm almost out of paper now, so I guess I'll end here. I'll write again.

I miss you miss you miss you miss you miss you miss you.

I love you. So much.

I miss you.

Kusama Nowaki

Takatsuki Shinobu - Miyagi You

The ¨Terrorist¨ Pair

¨Shinobu¨¨Miyagi¨ The CRAZY and also really original couple (by that I mean I LIKE them). Imagine your ex-wife´s little brother and your boss´ son coming all the way from Australia to Japan to tell you with dead ice-cold seriousness that he falls in love with you, and you have to take responsibility for that i.e. you must love him back (ahem, that sounds similar what a girl would say to the man who makes her pregnant). To make the matter worse, the boy is half your age and barely graduates from high school. That´s the situation Miyagi You, the 35-year-old Literature professor (as you may already notice, he is Kamijou´s superior), finds himself in. In addition, Miyagi newly got divorced (the cause is his apathy towards his wife) and has no intention of being serious with anything besides his work. Miyagi´s lukewarm attitude towards romance (and partly with life) has a deep root: the woman he was madly in love with, who was also his teacher died young. But his suitor Shinobu is a TERRORIST and an intelligent one (he has no trouble getting into a top university) who would use any means to get what he wants from cooking (even when he cannot cook despite his bright mind) to attempts to lure Miyagi into bed with him. More importantly, he is SERIOUS, and quite charming by his own right (you´ve got to love his icy scowling face when uttering phrases like ¨I love you¨ and his trademark ¨It is Fate¨). So yes, the astute professor who can get away from complicated social matters with his cold head and wit has met his match, and Miyagi´s life has been turned upside down. So far, the professor has practically admitted defeat to the terrorist Shinobu.

Opening and Ending Songs

Both TV and full versions

I like all the songs, especially Shodo (Impulse). They are good mood brightener and obviously a plus of this anime.

Who Pays the Piper Calls the Tune

These tracks are from the first Junjou Romantica OST album. As I said above, I LOVE them (even if I can find the music floating around on the Internet, I still want the CD), and this is MY lens.
EDIT: I have put all the files into one folder. You can find the link below. Same goes for the second soundtrack album. This is more economical and can help me avoid troubles with the new Squidoo policy about upper limit of links

The JR OST vol. 2. One note, only the tracks that I like are presented here.

Never Judge A Book By Its Cover, But Sometimes I Find Covers Do Matter

Are you tired of hearing ¨I must admit¨ from me yet? Then I have one more thing to concede. Although the art of this anime is cheesy to the core with all PINK and RIBBONS and STUFFED TOYS, it is eye-catching and quite adorable. These DVD and CD covers reflect that. You can easily find those DVDs on Amazon Japan (but be warned, the DVD version is UNCENSORED, you understand what I mean).

Love BL! I was not a fan until this series. I will be honest while I have love for anime romantic comedy was never big on my list, and BL was even farther down. This show had me onto the genre and I hope they can persuade the author and producers to put out a 3rd season.

Kusamas1 says:

I love Junjou Romantica!!! I think Egoist is the best couple though, although we don't see enough of them. I also love the way they keep it kinda rated so they only imply them having sex but they never show it unlike in other animes.

Thanks for the songs. :) And I totally agree with...well, practically everything you said. xD" I've never been one for BL, but considering how JR was popping up on literally every anime-centered site I go to, I gave in and tried it. Now, if only all BL had cute, somewhat-innocent plots. Hell, half of them don't even HAVE plots. ^^"

The anime is not explicit in terms of sex. I like the way they covered those kind of scenes and the words that followed normally after it. Clever~ Junjou Romantica is by far the nicest and cutest BL anime so far~
