Stop! Put Down Those Cookies and Step Away from the Junk Food!

Junk food. We eat it on the go, blaming our hectic schedules and the fact that we don't have time to make healthful foods.  We down it while mindlessly watching TV … a bag of popcorn here, a whole bag of Double Stuff Oreo cookies there.

Sooner or later, it catches up with you.  Not only is our junk food addiction wreaking havoc on our own lives and bodies, but it's influencing our children as well.  We're raising a generation that doesn't know what healthy food is!

Junk food comes in all shapes and sizes - from the Super-Sized Big Mac meal at McDonalds to the individual cans of soda we drink in place of the water our bodies crave to help our organs function properly.

When was the last time you had junk food?  Probably pretty recently. You might even have it in hand as you're reading this lens!  Well --- now's the time to put down the bag of Doritos and put yourself on a path where 90% of your diet is healthy and you use junk food as an occasional indulgence, not as the sole source of nutrition for your body.

Once you begin replacing junk food cravings with cravings for healthy substitutes, you'll realize there are many benefits to the swap.  You'll feel energetic, but that energy will last all day - not like the surge in energy you get when you scarf down a Snicker's bar.

And you'll lose weight!

Junk food is laden with calories and completely lacking nutrition.  We are actually malnourished when we are eating lots of junk food.  Changing your habits means your health will improve.

It's a great idea to head to the doctor and just get him to run a few stats for you before you cut back, so that you can see just how drastically your cholesterol and blood pressure improves, not to mention other bodily functions.

Recently Macdonalds did an experiment with carrots that were packaged in ordinary wrapping and carrots that were packaged in Macdonalds packaging.  Guess what?  Children tested them and said that the carrots in the Macdonalds packaging tasted better!

They were the same carrots -- this certainly shows how ingrained the advertising and brand recognition get deep within our brains and also this is why large corporations want to brainwash our children.

What'cha Gonna Do With All That Junk?

    Throw it out!

Sometimes, to instill new habits in yourself, you have to avoid the very things that are enticing you. A drug addict has to avoid his friends who do drugs. A junk food addict who craves fatty foods has to steer clear of that bad neighborhood - the center aisles of the grocery store where processed foods lurk and call out your name.

Start by cleaning out your fridge. Is what's in there damaging your health? Each item you pick up needs to be evaluated for how it meets your nutritional needs. Does it have lots of fiber to help flush out toxins? Is it full of calcium to help you build strong bones?

Or is its only purpose to produce a rush of endorphins and flavor after a hard day's work? If it doesn't serve a good purpose, toss it in the garbage. Next, go through your cabinets. Cookies, pasta dishes with rich, creamy (aka: fattening) sauces - give them the boot!

Do all of this before you go to the grocery store for your replacement options. You might want to go on a raw diet for awhile.

Dr. Oz was on Oprah showing clips of how they took a group of people plagued by cholesterol and blood pressure problems and put them on a diet where they ate 11 pounds of raw food each day - and not only did their blood pressure and cholesterol drop in a mere 10 days, but they lost weight, too!

It doesn't take long for the positive effects of ridding your life of junk food to take place. Your body will immediately begin putting the good food to use, clearing out toxins and applying the vitamins and minerals to help keep you healthy for the long term.

Don't wait until Monday to get started, or swear you'll do it "right after the holidays."

Don't Let Junk Food Have ANY Power Over You!

Once you've turned your house upside down and shaken out all of the junk food, how do you prevent yourself from just going down to the store to buy more junk food to soothe your cravings?

You have to learn how to attract the right things in your life - from the career and relationships you have to the mindset you choose to use when it comes to viewing your food choices!

The law of attraction is a simple concept that millions of people are using to regain control over their lives instead of relying on fate and destiny to take them where they need to go.

If you leave things up to chance, the wrong choices might take root. But if you actively seek to change your thought patterns - so that choosing healthful foods comes naturally to you, then you won't struggle with so-called willpower and things you feel you're unable to control.

Junk Food, according to Wikipedia

Junk food is a term describing food that is perceived to be unhealthy or having poor nutritional value, according to Food Standards Agency. The term is believed to have been coined by Michael Jacobson, director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, in 1972. The term has since become common usage.

Junk food typically contains high levels of fat, salt, or sugar and numerous food additives such as monosodium glutamate and tartrazine; at the same time, it is lacking in proteins, vitamins and fiber, among others. It is popular with suppliers because it is relatively cheap to manufacture, has a long shelf life and may not require refrigeration. It is popular with consumers because it is easy to purchase, requires little or no preparation, is convenient to consume and has lots of flavor. Consumption of junk food is associated with obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and dental cavities. There is also concern about the targeting of marketing at children.

Obesity is an Epidemic

Study Says 30% of Calories are from "Junk Food"

A Study in the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis states that Americans are consuming 30% of their calories from "junk food".

Dr. Block, who conducted the study, said "It's no wonder there's an obesity epidemic in this country".

Hi Lisa!
Great point -- absolutely, isn't it wonderful when you actually lose the taste for something that you thought you "couldn't live without" before? For most of us, it is a slow process, but when it happens and our bodies are in balance, it feels so wonderful to bypass junk food easily! Diana

Hi Diana

Thanks for the great lens. I've found that since kicking my addiction to fatty foods, if I have that kind of food again, it just feels so greasy in the mouth! I still sometimes have rich foods, but don't crave them any more. It's all about losing the taste for it as well, isn't it?

Thanks for your comments, Maria, Brad and Christina! Yes, Christina -- I think slow changes are better than quick ones anyway - they are more lasting, and the changes can become lifelong good habits! Diana

Hi Christina,
Thanks so much for your input -- yes, I know it is often baby steps. It starts with the awareness, and then just making changes slowly. I'm not a believer in making giant changes quickly because it can be overwhelming. So that is great that you are making changes slowly! Diana

Thanks for your comment, Kat! Oh, I think that is an experiment they should do in all schools - I wonder if they do it now? It made a lifelong impression on you, so that is terrific!

I agree Diana! I don't drink pop at all ever and never did even in my teens. (they made us do that test in school where if you lose a tooth you put it in cola and it disappears over a short time)so it turned me off it. Info to the masses would be an extremely good idea. K

Great lens! I don't eat much junk food, but I love junk drinks - flavored coffee, diet coke, iced coffees... I think those are worse for me than the junk food!
