Legendary Operatic Tenor Jussi Bjorling
This lens is dedicated to the legendary Swedish operatic tenor Jussi Bjorling, whose magnificent voice continues to thrill opera lovers more than 40 years after his death. Jussi Bjorling (together with Enrico Caruso and Beniamino Gigli) is considered by many to be one of opera's three greatest tenors.
The website of the Jussi Bjorling Society-USA describes him as follows: "Jussi Björling's flawless vocal technique, silvery beauty of tone, gleaming upper register, and superb interpretive skills have made him one of the greatest and most beloved tenors of the century. Numerous colleagues as well as music critics have long placed Jussi at the very pinnacle of vocal excellence. It was to Jussi that Dorothy Caruso, widow of Enrico Caruso, said, "You are the only one worthy to wear his mantle, bear Rico's crown!"
Despite his fame across three continents, Jussi remained a humble and simple man, deeply devoted to his family. His tragically early death in 1960 at the age of 49 ended a brilliant career that began during the acoustic era of recording and extended to the advent of stereophonic sound.
Jussi Björling's strong bond with the people of America dates from when audiences first heard him as a young boy. As a man, his appearances at opera houses from New York to San Francisco were eagerly awaited each season, and he crisscrossed the country performing in concerts and recitals. His enormous popularity in the United States lives to this day, and the formation of The Jussi Björling Society-USA, 38 years after his death, is testament to this."
The Jussi Bjorling Society USA provides a forum for Bjorling enthusiasts to meet and share information, experiences and ideas. The Society celebrates and preserves the legacy of this unique artist and works to educate a new generation about Jussi's special gift. JBS works in collaboration with the Jussi Bjorling Appreciation Society (U.K.) and in cooperation with the Jussi Bjorling Museum (Sweden) and the Scandinavian Jussi Bjorling Sällskapet.

Who Am I and Why Did I Create a Jussi Bjorling Lens?
In addition to my family and 5 cats, there are two things in life that I love: Victorian design and the voice of Jussi Bjorling. I fell in love with Bjorling's magnificent voice back in the mid-1950's. In 1998 I had the pleasure of connecting with three other Bjorling / opera fans (Dan Shea, the current president of JBS, Tom Hines- now a member of the Advisory Board- and Andy Binns) to establish the Jussi Bjorling Society - USA. I served as a member of the Board of Directors up until a year ago. I am now a member of the Society's Advisory Board.JBS is incorporated as a non-profit organization, a charitable 501(C)3. All contributions to JBS-USA are fully deductible to the extent provided by law. All officers of the Society are volunteers and receive no compensation or other financial benefits. JBS-USA is fortunate to have on its Advisory Committees individuals who are not only experts on the life and career of Jussi Björling but who are also experts in the art of opera and classical music in general. Their many contributions are deeply appreciated.
If you aren't familiar with Bjorling's voice, I urge you to listen. His artistry will bless your heart and your spirit. For more information about the JBS or to become a member of the Society, visit the JBS website at:

The Jussi Bjorling Museum in Borlange, Sweden
A MUST SEE if you're planning a vacation in Sweden!
The Jussi Borling Museum opened on October 22, 1994, in conjunction with the international Jussi Bjorling Tenor Competition. It is located a short distance from the place where Jussi Bjorling was born in 1911.The objects and documents in the museum were gathered from many sources, but a large number of them were contributed by Jussi Bjorling's family, the Jussi Bjorlinggarden Foundation, and the Royal Opera in Stockholm.
On the second floor of the Museum is the Assembly Hall, decorated with Bjorling posters. Here the tenor can be heard and seen singing on video recordings from American television. An almost complete reference collection of Jussi Bjorling's recordings is preserved here. This collection comprises (on CD, LP, or tape) 38 complete and 16 more-or-less incomplete opera or oratorio performances, and more than 600 song, aria and duet recordings.
On this same floor is the Listening and Study Room, which offers two listening stations with two seats each for visitors. Each station contains a multi-CD player with 6 CDs, so that totally about 250 songs, arias, etc. sung by Jussi Bjorling can be played as chosen by the listener. A multi-media database with his recordings, currently containing about 200 items, is available on a computer in this room.
When your tour is completed, the reception area in the entrance hall offers a comprehensive selection of Bjorling CDs, records and DVDs, books, postcards, T-shirts, posters, photographs and other souvenirs.
For a more detailed view of the Museum, visit their website (the link is in the list below).
The Museum is open year round with the exception of certain holidays, and the entrance fees are extremely reasonable. If you plan to visit Sweden, the Jussi Bjorling Museum should be on your itinerary.
