The Healing Power of Words on a T Shirt
My amazing friend, Lori Mertz, started JUST BEE for showcasing her creative drawings.
At the age of 42, Lori has already lived about three lifetimes. She was a foster mother for three children, a production manager in the movie industry, administrative project manager in a Fortune 500 company, toured Thailand, Nepal and India, had open-heart surgery at age 22, toured the United States for three months, worked for the Utah professional basketball team, Jazz, worked on a Montana dude ranch, was a massage therapist for grammy and academy award-winners, and last but certainly not least, was the mouse mascot for Chuck E. Cheese Pizza.
In April, 2001, Lori was bicycling around her Newport Beach, California community when the handle bars collapsed and she fell head-first onto the cement curb. She sustained a serious brain injury. (No, she wasn't wearing a helmet.) Lori's healing after the accident was sometimes discouraging, despairing, confusing, often painful and heightened by feelings of sadness as she battled her way back to wholeness.
Recovering from brain injury takes times. Lori was forced to slow down. In an effort to engage in life in a way that didn't tax her brain, Lori found herself spending days at the ocean with her side-kick Bert, graphically journaling uplifting affirmations to herself for healing and wholeness. It worked.
A year and a half later, a friend saw her drawings and encouraged her to offer them to others so they, too, could be uplifted, affirmed, healed and feel the delight that comes when one can Just Bee. Lori chose to showcase her designs on cards, t-shirts, and wall art.
Thus was born JUST BEE: Lit From Within. In this lens, I'll share with you some of the great designs and messages of Just Bee.
In Lori's own words, "Touch, move and inspire yourself and the world around you. Just Bee the Light you want to see, the Joy you want to feel, the Presence you want to bee."

What's Up With These Bright Colors?
Her clothes on the other hand are soft fabrics and colors so that they feel wonderful. The words work through the emotional body, creating a sense of peace, joy and contentment. The ideal emotional setting for healing, being inspired and moving through life with joy.
Toddlers shirts are in strong primary colors because they are developing a sense of self and with it a strong sense of self-esteem. Baby Onesies are in a soft palate as they are still very dreamy, drifting between this realm and the heavenly realm they came from.
Why The Words You Wear Matter

How many T-shirts in your closet do you have with a written message on them? Do you think they are only affecting the people who read them? Think again! Here in Lori's own voice is why words that you wear matter:
"There are good reasons to cover your body with delicious, empowering words! It's been scientifically demonstrated that words have the ability to affect water molecules. good vibrations - good vibes - create healthy patterns in water. healthy patterns in water support the magic of life.
Studies show that water taken from jars with the words love, gratitude and peace written on them form beautiful, complete snowflake-like crystals when frozen and photographed.
Did you know that your body is more than 70% water?
Your brain, more than 75% water
Your blood, more than 85% water
Your muscles, more than 75% water
Your bones, about 50% water
Your lungs, nearly 80% water, and
Your liver, an amazing 96% water!
Want to learn more about how you can affect your body through water?
Read The Hidden Messages in Water by Masaru Emoto. in this and his many other books, Dr. Emoto explains how by holding an intention of love, joy, serenity or grace towards water in our bodies, that water can and will bring that intention to our bodies and, ultimately, to the world.
Now you know that what you think, say - and wear - affects the water you are made up of, your health and well-being!
What are you wearing?" L. Mertz

Designs of Love and Hope
Just Bee Cause

Lori's story of why she supports the charity, Christmas Box, once again shows us how she acts on her beliefs. The three beautiful children shown here were her foster children for two years.
Lori says:
"Near and dear to Just Bee is the Christmas Box House, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that supports abused and neglected children.
Christmas Box International and the Christmas Box House, were inspired by the book The Christmas Box, which celebrates love for children. Christmas Box International provides services around the United States and the world to improve the quality of life for children who have been abused or neglected.
The Christmas Box House provides transitional shelter for children removed from abusive homes. Children stay at the Christmas Box House before going on to foster homes or before returning to their own homes once they are safe.
The Christmas Box House additionally serves as a one-stop assessment center where children receive mental, emotional and physical care in a loving, home-like environment. they also receive badly needed new clothing and incidentals.
children's charity
In keeping with Just Bee's bee-lief in win-win-win scenarios, 20% of the proceeds from sales at the Just Bee launch event held on November 14, 2007 in Newport Beach, California were donated to the Christmas Box House, as well as a box of Just Bee merchandise.
I wish the Christmas Box House had existed more than 12 years ago when I took in three foster children of my own in May, 1995. They arrived at my home in Salt Lake City with all their clothes and possessions fitting in one small box. The state provided me just $163 per child for new wardrobes (bathing suits to snow suits).
With Just Bee I can now support the Christmas Box House in a whole new way; clothing for infants, toddlers and teens - to touch, move and inspire - as they take their next steps."
To learn more about the Christmas Box House and Christmas Box International, visit their website at The Christmas Box House."
Unfortunately, the Squidoo charities don't feature this charity yet. In the meantime, all money earned from this site will go to Save the Children.

- What a wonderful lens! Lori's story of battling back from serious injury is very inspiring, and to see how she used it as an opportunity to uplift not only herself but others is heartening. So many people retreat into themselves when faced with adversity, and become directed only inward. Glad to see the opposite so amply demonstrated. Beautiful. Or should I say bee-autiful? :>)
I also really want to second how important it is to wear a helmet during phsyical activities. I'm involved in the equestrian world, and a helmet is the #1 most important piece of equipment we have. People sometimes forget that riding horses is not only a sport, it's a very dangerous sport. While Lori came out of her accident and subsequent struggle with some positivity, not everyone gets that chance. I can't stress enough how important helmet's are. I even touched on that subject in my recent horse riding clothing blog entry. Keep it up, Lori!

- I love this lens and the great clothing! As far as turning adversity into triumph I'd like to recommend 2 lenses. The first is on Judy Gordon who had breast cancer and defeated it. The second lens is on Donna DeNomme who has written some very helpful books on Turtle Wisdom about overcoming negative thinking and beginning to thrive.
