How to choose between a blog or website
Justhost supports both, so how do you choose?
While websites and blogs have lots of similarities, there are differences that could impact your goals in the long run, if you don't take certain things into consideration. A website is full of possibilities, but sometimes, it's those endless possibilities that leave beginners totally confused. A website provides a platform for creating an online community for your business - with enough know-how you could turn your site into the next social-media craze. With too little knowledge, you may end up with a ghost town of a site that simply takes up webspace.
A blog is a simple way to keep your readers informed and entertained, while they can interact by posting comments, there's not much more they can do. Blogging is, however, combined with a website is a great way to funnel traffic to your website since they are indexed much quicker in search engines, especially if you post often. A blog is also good because it provides a simple template that requires very little tinkering to create a consistent look that flows seemlessly from post to post with the right plug-ins (see "The 8 Top Plug-ins Every Wordpress blog needs" below).
While in my opinion, it never hurts to have both, if you don't have time to periodically update your website or properly match it with your website, a blog may be more appropriate for you. But reader through the following for more areas to consider before making your final decision.
1. If you would like to upload documents and allow others to download them via a URL - a website will allow you more flexibility for doing so.
2. If you would like to post short articles every day or a few times a week - a blog will make this process a lot simpler.
3. If you'd like the freedom of creating unblockable pop-ups for subscriber offers - a website with HTML or javascript knowledge is more appropriate.
4. If you'd like to create an online community where your visitors can log in and create profiles and have the freedom of posting to forums or articles of their own (this is a great way to boost Google Adsense earnings) - you definitely need a website.
5. If you'd like something super simple, with minimal set-up time, yet still professional-looking - a blog may suffice.
6. If you'd like to have unlimited online storage space - a self-hosted website is needed.
7. If you'd like unlimited email accounts with auto-responders and forwarders - you should consider a website. Another alternative is to use an Email Service provider, such as iContact - they offer affordable rates and allow you to schedule emails and even track the results.
8. If you'd like to sell products or other services - you should consider hosting both a website and a blog. You'll want the website to create an online store, but you'll want a blog to post product updates, special discounts, or useful reviews and videos that allow your potential customers to see how your products work.
9. If you'd like to host Google Adsense or other sponsored ads, you can do that with either a blog or a website. However, you must take visual organization into account when choosing a template or designing your site. Some templates may not support your ads.
I hope this has helped you in making your decision to chose a website or a blog. Feel free to contact me via email or follow me on Twitter (see above). Be sure to leave a comment if you've found this lens to be of assistance.

How to choose an appropriate Wordpress Theme
9 questions to ask yourself
1. Do I plan on displaying ads? If so, where?
2. Do I want to add Twitter plug-ins? If so, is this template compatible?
3. Is there a particular set of articles I'd like to feature in a prominent spot for all my readers to see? If so, is this template compatible with the "Featureme" plug-in?
4. Does this template have a help site where I can go for installation questions or other problems?
5. Does this template vibe with my niche? Is it professional-looking and appropriate for what I'm trying to do?
6. Do I need a right sidebar, left sidebar, or both? The eye is automatically drawn to the left, since we read from left to right - using a left sidebar may cause your content to be overlooked. Right sidebars are most common.
7. Does this template have an appropriate font? If not, do I know how to change it? San Serif fonts such as Arial and Verdana are most appropriate for online content while serif fonts like Times or Georgia are most appropriate for print. You also want the font to vibe with the atmosphere - avoid goofy looking fonts such as Comic Sans for business or more formal sites. However, Comic Sans would be appropriate for a kids' site or an arts & crafts type site.
8. Does this template have an easy and convenient way for me to post images and/or videos?
Before you choose a dark background with white fonts, PLEASE ask yourself this question:
9. Why? What exactly is my purpose for doing this? You must go beyond selecting this template simply because it's cute. Dark background/white fonts are a strain on the eye and really are only appropriate for a few niches such as video games and other entertainment niches.
8 of the most important Wordpress plug-ins every blog needs
Getting the biggest bang out of your Justhost hosted blog
1. Mobile Edition If you don't hurry up and get this plug-in, you could be missing out on loads of new mobile visits and in turn Google Adsense for Mobile opportunities. Everyday there are tons of new smart phones users springing up. iphone and Blackberry, and a host of other touch screen phones and mobile internet devices such as the PSP or Dsi have created new avenues from surfing the web. If for no other reason than increasing your Adsense revenue, you definitely want this plug-in. You'll also need to upload the Carrington Mobile Theme to your Themes Directory. Be sure to follow all installation instructions.
2. Sharethis Too many times, I stumble across sites and find some interesting material I want to post to Facebook, Digg, Stumbleupon, and/or Twitter - but the problem is, the URL is too long, and I'll admit that I'm just too lazy to go Bit.ly to shorten it - that requires just too much effort and attention. So even though I enjoyed it and my followers probably would, too - I failed to share it. Get this, your average user's attention span is even shorter than mine. Don't assume they've got a toolbar that makes for easy posting either. You need a quick and easy way for your readers to share your content. You'll want to get this one stat!
3. Tweetmeme So what if you already have Sharethis, you'll want this plug-in, too. Why? Because it Twitter is the top social media site right now and if you can get your content to spread on Twitter, it'll generate website traffic like no other site. Plus, it displays the numbers for how many times your content has been tweeted - people are nosy and for some reason, when they see others have taken notice and tweeted, they'll follow suit.
4. Twitter Avatar This plug-in allows your commentators to include their Twitter username and pic when they comment on a post. This creates a new level of interactivity on your site. People love to spread their Twitter id around - why? Because it creates an opportunity to gain new followers. So in essence, it encourages people to comment on your site when they would've otherwise just kept on clicking elsewhere. Plus, you can follow them and keep tabs on what your readers are interested in and what they are up to via Twitter. Gotta love it!
5. CommentLuv If the Twitter Avatar plug-in doesn't get people posting, this one will. Why? Because when readers enter their blog URL to post a comment, it creates a link to their last blog post. Bloggers love this one, because it allows them an opportunity to get exposure to their blog without being spammy. Note: You should always check these links out before you approve a comment just in case they've posted a link to a site you don't want to be associated with, such as competitor sites, adult sites or otherwise undesirable content.
6. LinkWithin Keep your visitors on your site longer links to related articles. Linkwithin automatically generates links to up to 5 related articles and posts at the end of every blog post. Visitors are often looking for more information and this plug-in will put right there at their fingertips.
7. AtoZ Index Your visitors would hang out on your site longer if you had a table of contents of some sorts. This is not something you want to display in your side bar, instead, you create a separate page and call it "All Posts" or "Table of Contents." Then use the code to display links to all of the posts you've ever written on your blog so that visitors who are thirsting for more of your knowledge can browse around and find something else they're intested in. They just might click on to that product review you've been promoting so diligently and make a purchase - who knows?
8. Subscribe Button You've probably already got a subscribe button somewhere on your blog, but this one allows your visitors to add a RSS feed of your site to the Reader of their choice. People want options, the more the merrier!
Visit affiliate marketer's help desk for similar articles. Be sure to let me know you were there by leaving a comment and hitting the "sharethis" button. I'll be sure to follow you on Twitter, visit your site and do the same!
How to block spam comments automatically on WordPress
Don't waste your time wading through spam
1. First you'll need to log in to your WordPress dashboard with your username and password.
2. Go to "Plug-ins" (hover and then click "Installed").
3. Locate the "Askimet" plug-in.
4. Once you click "Activate," you'll need to provide your "API key". This can be located by logging in to www.wordpress.com. Click "My Account", then click "Edit Profile." Your Wordpress.com API Key will be located at the top of the page. Copy and paste the code to activate.
Now, you will no longer receive bothersome notifications, since Askimet will catch them for you. I still suggest that you periodically check comments that get caught in the "spam queue" before totally deleting them, just in case some real comments were caught by accident - it's rare, but it has happened.
How to set up a Facebook Fan Page for your Justhost site
Increase your influence and web presence with Facebook
A Facebook Fan page is different from an average profile page in which you have to use your real name. Facebook fan pages allow you to create a page with your site's name instead of your name. This helps you establish a brand name for your blog or website, in addition to creating a place where your fans can receive updates and supplemental information about your site, services, or products. It's great because it's super easy to post links and videos that your fans may find useful. It also allows you and your fans to interact in a new and innovative way.
To set up a Face book Fan Page:
1. Go to http://www.facebook.com. (If you don't already have a regular profile, you should create one at this time.)
2. Scroll down to the bottom of the login page until you see: "Create a Page for a celebrity, band or business." Click on: Create a Page.
3. Follow the steps. You may check "Do not make Page publicly visible at this time" to give yourself to set the page up to your liking.
To access the page again, simply login to your Facebook account and click "Pages" in the left sidebar. (Should be right under "News Feed".
To create a badge for your Fan Page to place on your site:
1. Click your Page name to get to it.
2. Click "Edit Page" in the left sidebar.
3. Scroll down and click "Promote with a Fan Box" in the right sidebar.
4. Follow the instructions to generate the code to post on your site. It will create a Preview so you'll know how it will look on your site. Be sure to add your website's logo or your picture to personalize your Facebook Fan Box.

How to Ad Google Adsense to Your Justhost Website
Get Paid by the Click

In order to add Google Adsense, you'll need to sign up here for a free account if you haven't already done so. You'll need to follow the steps for setting up an account (I promise it's easy!) Just click the "Sign Up" button and let Google guide you. You'll need some basic HTML skills, although if you can follow directions you should be okay, too.
1. After you've generated your Adsense HTML code, highlight and copy the code.
2. Log in to your "Website Builder Admin Panel".
3. Decide where you want your Google Ads to display.
If you would like your ads to appear in the sidebar of all of your webpages in your site, you'll need to place them in the layout. Follow the instructions below to place them in your side bar. If you want to place them only in specific places on specific pages, or in the footer, skip ahead.
To Place Google Adsense code in your Sidebar:
1. Click on "Layout Design".
2. Click "Select a website template to be edited. Usually your selected template is the default that will display in the drop down window, but you may need to select if you have more than one.
3. Click "next". This will open the WYSIWYG HTML editor.
4. Then click the "HTML" button in the upper right hand corner of the editor to open the "HTML Source Editor".
5. This will not be an exact science since I don't know exactly how your site is laid out, but generally if you can identify the code of another item that is already in your sidebar, you can use that as reference and paste your code above or below that item. For example, if you know the "NEWS" section is in the sidebar, you can past your Google Adsense code directly underneath it. You may have to do a few test runs. If you don't like where it ends up, try again.
6. Click the "Save" or disc shaped button to save your settings.
7. Preview your site to see how it will look to the public.
To place Google Adsense in a Specific Location:
1. Go to the specific page where you want to place your Google Adsense code.
2. If you have other text you want to place near it, you'll want to "Insert a new table" by clicking the appropriate button. If you can't fin the right button, just float your mouse over each button until you identify the right one.
3. You paste your code directly into the table or you can use the "HTML Source Editor" (by clicking the HTML button in the upper right hand corner) if you're familiar with HTML and can identify the right place to paste your code.
4. Click the "Save" or disc button to save your settings.
5. Preview your site to see how it will look to the public.
To Place Google Adsense Code in the Footer:
5. Scroll down until you see the {%WebsiteFooter%} tags. Paste your Google Adsense code underneath, but above the last tag.
6. Click the "Save" or disc shaped button to save your settings.
7. Preview your site to see how it will look to the public.
This will pretty much work the same anywhere else in your site, so play around with it until you get it exactly how you like it.

How to Setup Justhost Email Auto Responders

1. Log into your Justhost Cpanel.
2. Scroll down to "Mail" and click "Auto-Responders."
3. Click "Add/Modify Auto-Responder".

For example, use one email account/auto-responder for subscriber list building and another for responding to frequently asked questions or other issues.
Get creative, you can bounce auto-resonders from one email account to the next for even more automation.
How to Troubleshoot Your Email Autoresponders
Periodically conduct Autoresponder tests
Here are possible issues and ways to fix them:
1. Typos are the #1 reason autoresponders don't work properly - if you leave out one letter, or put it in the wrong place, your autoresponder will not work properly. When setting up an autoresponder, conduct several test runs with a non Justhost email address such as yahoo or gmail.
2. The next biggest issue is using a well constructed submission form - if you are unsure about how to create your own email form, the easiest thing to do is to subscribe to an email service such as iContact and copy and paste their forms - you may also utilize their autoresponder feature if you are unfamiliar with how all of this works.
3. Another, yet rare issue: your autoresponder emails may be being blocked by Yahoo. Yahoo is notorious for blocking suspected spam email. This doesn't mean what you're sending is spam, it just means Yahoo has a set of markers that often indicates and email is spam. When those markers are triggered, they will block any emails that generate from your domain. If you have been sending email with any of the following, your email autoresponder may be blocked:
Discontinue these practices immediately and wait about a week or two before sending any more emails.
Strangely I had discovered Yahoo had blocked emails from my domain because I hadn't automated my spam blocker - and everytime someone posted a spam comment, the notification was forwarded to my Yahoo email account. Yahoo thought the messages were from me because they had been forwarded from my domain, but they were just tons of spam -
4. Make sure you are utilize the spam blocker in your comment queue. (read "How to automatically block spam on Wordpress" above)

- Hi Hypnozell,
Forgive me, but I always start simple, and then move to the more complex - so feel free to continue to ask questions if I don't touch on your issue adequately.
When using the contact form you need to be sure you have entered the appropriate email that you want messages sent to. Double check your spelling.
Are you using a yahoo, gmail, or your own webmail via justhost? Yahoo tends to block messages that they believe are spam - gmail is the most reliable.
Are you able to see the contact form and enter your information? Could you give me the URL where the contact form is located? You can email it to me if you'd like to maintain your privacy: questions@affiliateshelpdesk.com
I'll be able to help you better once I'm able to take a look. Thanks!

- I never heard of Justhost before. I'll check them out when I need another hosting account.
