The Only Hope for the Canadian Liberal Party

With the results of the federal election sinking in, it is clear that the old guard of the Liberal party has been completely rejected across Canada. Michael Ignatieff did not captivate Canadians, despite his famous tours designed to endear him with the general population of Canada, and he has resigned. Justin Trudeau, however, has retained his seat and may become the next leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

On April 26, 2011, Justin mentioned that the Liberal party has not managed to connect with ordinary Canadians. How true his words seem as the May 2, 2011 has delivered a crushing defeat to the party. Who could have imagined that the NDP, under the leadership of the late Jack Layton, would take over the role as Official Opposition? This historic event clearly shows that big changes are needed in the Liberal party leadership. Jack Layton of the NDP was seen to be a strong force while the recent Liberal leaders were not. With the untimely passing of Jack Layton, the era of change in Canadian politics is clearly far from over.

With the coming of a new reality in government, hard questions must be asked about the Liberal party. Was it wise to pick Michael Ignatieff to lead the party? It sure seems like a bad decision now. One could hardly imagine that the new leader would be worse than the previous, Stéphane Dion, yet that is true as well. Actually, Mr. Dion now seems to be a relative success, measured by the collapse that is the fault of Ignatieff. If there is any consolation for the party, it could be that the Bloc Québécois has actually done worse. Mr. Duceppe has removed himself from the political scene. For the Liberal Party, however, the fortunes of the separatist party is simply a parallel disaster.

Justin Trudeau is a man worth watching seriously now. Already a successful politician, he must be thought of as a candidate to lead the Liberal Party of Canada now or in the near future. Whether his time is soon or not, remains to be seen. Eventually, the Liberal party must choose him as their leader and savior of the party. When you look at Justin Trudeau, you see an intelligent young man who is bilingual, educated and the son of a very successful prime minister. There can be no other man who represents an honest savior for the party. Of course, this is assuming that the Liberals are able to survive after the election disaster of May 2.

With the state of Canadian politics today, there needs to be someone that people actually want to vote for. Most Canadian elections have had people vote against someone. They have mainly been protest votes for years. Justin Trudeau can distance himself from the past and show that the time is right for a new type of young, capable leader who has the intelligence to lead well. Although Justin has indicated that he is undecided, and that his family must come first, there is a large number of people who believe him to be worthy of leadership.

Certainly the Liberal party will have to seriously be re-examined since they faltered so badly on election day. The leaders they have had since the departure of Jean Cretien have not done much to galvanize public opinion. In fact, if anything they have driven people away from the party. The old solutions and old styles are not going to work well into the future and certainly need to be changed after the May 2 election debacle that was delivered to the LIberal Party of Canada.

As many have noticed, the Conservative majority government means federal stability for at least four years. This gives the Liberal party time to evaluate everything from the leader to funding to public support. There may still be an opportunity for the party to improve its image with Canadians. It will now be the NDP who are closely observed by the public and the media as they attempt to pick a new leader to build on Jack Layton's vision. Whether the focus ever comes back to the Liberal party remains to be seen. Clearly, however, if they reject Justin Trudeau for leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, then they might have to fold completely.

The Liberal Party of Canada Today

Adrift, at best

Unfortunately, the Liberal Party of Canada has not been overly successful of late. After the departure of Jean Chrétien, the party has tried to form governments with various leaders. None has captured the emotion, or support, of the country. While Chrétien was able to win three elections, the best his successors have done is to form a minority government once. Paul Martin was fairly effective and represented a man seemingly destined for a long run as prime minister. Instead, he barely lasted three years. Stéphane Dion didn't even do that well in his three years as leader.

The latest leader, Michael Ignatieff, failed to garner widespread support from the people. Despite his obvious intelligence, Canadians didn't feel that he was right to lead the country. Under Ignatieff, the party was hardly not able to gain strength or power. Fund raising was difficult. The party now clearly needs a change at the top. Is it time to select Justin Trudeau as the leader? The buzz on the Internet, (Facebook and Twitter), seems to think so.

Return of Trudeaumania

Just a matter of time until Trudeaumania 2.0

Trudeaumania 2.0 Justin Trudeau

Prediction: when Justin Trudeau announces that he will run for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada, the country will revive the mass hysteria known as 'Trudeaumania'. It happened when Justin's father, Pierre Trudeau, came into the public spotlight and it will happen for Justin. In Canada, like most countries these days, people rarely vote for anyone - they vote against someone.

That will change when Justin Trudeau announces his intention to lead. Canadians will finally have someone to vote for. The people will share their enthusiasm for Justin Trudeau in a national period of celebration, Trudeaumania 2.0. The press will pick up on the theme and it will go viral. Just like a number of Internet storms of the past, Trudeaumania 2.0 will capture a lot of bandwidth as it builds. Justin Trudeau is smart and will recognize the mood of the nation and he'll ride Trudeaumania 2.0 as it propels him into the Prime Minister's chair.

What Justin Trudeau Should Consider

Political issues to note

Justin Trudeau has the attention of a lot of people in Canada already. His Facebook page is frequently updated with comments expressing support for Justin as Prime Minister. Despite this, Justin is thus far a reluctant leadership candidate. He must recognize that he is young and has little formal experience that qualifies him for the role as leader of the country. Luckily, he is gaining such experience now. In time, (how much?), he will have what he considers enough experience and Trudeaumania 2.0 will begin.

Just being popular isn't enough. To lead the country Justin will have to use his popularity to engage and captivate people. He will have to continue to support Quebec as a valued member of Canada. He should be able to hold the country together like no other person can.

Justin Trudeau should remember that his father was criticised for his grasp of economics. Justin should enlist good advisers that he can trust to help formulate an excellent economic action plan. He has the intelligence to know what to do.

Is it time for Trudeaumania 2.0? Is he ready to lead?

Yes, it's Justin Time

JoanneOtt says:

The main reason why I agree it's Justin time is because the liberals have no other obvious leader. It will be interesting to see how the party does in the next few years.

p cadman says:

he seems to be be the only man to get us being canadian again.

TransplantedSoul says:

He is a wonderful speaker, but timing is everything. The Liberals still seem to be in disarray - so it'll be hard to get ready for the next election. If they need a face - Justin might be it.

DaveStone13 says:

Hope! I was in Canada in the exciting late Sixties when my friends from Toronto thought change was coming. It did, for a while, here in the States too. Ready to go back at it again!

Tipi says:

The day is coming!

No, he's just not ready

DaveHiggsVis says:

I can see him leading the old Liberal party, but I'm not sure if he can save the new (post-election) party.

Harper needs to go the sooner the better for all Canadians, and someday when and if Justin is ready, he will be a very welcome force for the Liberal party.

I think Justin is a good hope for the future. God knows, we need an inspirational leader and let us pray that Justin Trudeau may be it some day. A friend of mine met his wife and apparently she (the wife) is pretty cool too.

I remember hearing about Pierre Elliot Trudeau often as we got Canadian TV over the air for many years as I grew up on the Ontario boarder. May Justin follow in his Dad's footstep to the Prime Ministership with wisdom and knowledge in leadership even beyond that of his Father. What exciting times in Canadian politics!

Savior might be a bit of a stretch, but he sure does have a chance to help revive the Reds. :-)
