About Lampwork Beads
Lampwork beads are glass beads made by hand with a torch. Different colors of glass are melted and wound around a mandrel, a metal rod, that has been coated in bead release (otherwise the glass would just stick to the metal). For a bead to be durable it needs to be properly annealed in a kiln to reduce the stresses within the glass. Round beads with no external decorations can be dropped on a concrete floor with no damage to the bead. Lampwork beads come in all shapes, colors, and sizes. An artist is limited only by their imagination. Because of the popularity of artist lampwork beads there are many importers who sell similar, but inferior beads at cut rate prices. These beads are usually made out of inferior glass and are not annealed properly. Your best bet is to look for beads from a self-representing artist. If they claim to be a "studio" you will want to look into it more. My Home Page
