The Weather Outside is SUPER.
And it is the right time of the year to consider training for something new. NOW is a great time time to really settle down and conscientiously train for success For my large breed dogs, I am working with Phoenix on basic behavior and helping her to learn who is the true "pack leader" in the household. She has a tendency to want to rush me and get out in front when she takes her walks so I'm starting right now by "settling her" before she even goes out the door. It's beginning to work, too!.
It is also shedding season and time to keep up with the grooming with a coated dog. Neglecting the coat this time of year can be disastrous and lead to hot spots. Grooming is always a good time to share some lovin' and huggin. Play the "game" of touching/rubbing each toe and toe nail, so you can get your dog used to getting his nails trimmed. Don't forget to clean his ears....and it's a great time to teach your dog to learn how to get his teeth brushed.
With fall coming on, it is time to start thinking about the activities that you will be doing INDOORS during the long cold winter with your dog too. Fall is also a great time to sit at the computer and look up all kinds of dog related things...especially check out GONE TO THE DOGS.for tons of articles, also you UPLOAD YOUR OWN DOG'S PHOTOS here! It's also fun to try to teach your dog some tricks.
There is no substitute for exercise!
Besides, walking is good for the soul.
There is no substittute for exercise and walking is one of the best. Walking is good for both of you, your canine partner needs it just as much as you do There is always time for a walk, don't kid yourself. You proably think oh there just isn't time in my day, but seriously you don't have time NOT to walk. Walking improves your circulation, keeps your heart healthy, helps to reduce weight or at leat burn calories, and like I said before, it's good for the soul.
Walking is a special time that you can share with your dog. If you have multiple dogs, sometimes it is a nice treat for just ONE DOG and you to take a walk together and it gives both of you some quality time. so that is a nice thing to do every now and then. Your dog willl get so used to his daily walk that he will learn to know when it is about time to go, and he will surely let you know. My "girl" Feeny knows that every morning, bright and early, first thing, while the weather is still cool, we will go for a walk. In this pleasnt little town it is a quiet and soothing way to start the day.
If you enjoy roller skating or skijoring, this is a great way to excecise your dog. Hook him up to a harness and he can pull you right along. Of course, this is for the bigger breeds, I'm afraid this just wouldn't work for a chihuahua.

Small dogs have a higher metabolism rate than bigger dogs do and have plenty of energy to burn. Carrying them aound everywhere can lead to obesity Most small dogs handle exercise quite well.

3. Give your dog a haircut and bath.
4. Go for a walk to the dog park. if you dont have a dog park and want to let him run, see if there is a tennis courts or a ball diamond you can turn him loose in for awhile.
5. Take him to the playground and let him climb up the slide the wrong way.
6. Teach him to play hide and seek in your house. (get a blanket and hide under it in the and then call the dog, see what happens!!)

8. Take him for a walk to the ice cream store and let him have a lick or two of your ice cream cone.
9.If he is a city dog, take him to a farm to visit horses and cows (through the fence)

Go Walking In the Rain!
Stop thunderstorm fears before they start
When you take your best friend for a walk, go ahead and do it in the rain sometimes! It teaches your pooch not to be afraid of the thunder. I cdon't advise going out in SEVERE weather of course but a little rain won't hurt anyone and it will make it be very 'matter of fact" for your dog. Besides, you can splurge and buy your puppy some cute rain gear and then he'll be SO CUTE!
