The Weather Outside is NASTY..
And it is the right time of the year to consider training for something new. NOW is a great time time to really settle down and conscientiously TRAIN INSIDE your dog. For my large breed dogs, I am working with Phoenix on basic behavior and helping her to learn who is the true "pack leader" in the household. Since she has a tendency to be rather flighty and excitable this is an ongoing process.
It is also shedding season and time to keep up with the grooming with a coated dog. Neglecting the coat this time of year can be disastrous and lead to hot spots. Grooming is always a good time to share some lovin' and huggin. Play the "game" of touching/rubbing each toe and toe nail, so you can get your dog used to getting his nails trimmed. Don't forget to clean his ears....and it's a great time to teach your dog to learn how to get his teeth brushed.
With fall coming on, it is time to start thinking about the activities that you will be doing INDOORS during the long cold winter with your dog too. Fall is also a great time to sit at the computer and look up all kinds of dog related things...especially doggy gifts for your favorite doggy friends, for Christmas. It's also fun to try to teach your dog some tricks.
Being indoors and working on household tasks, working on the computer, washing the dishes, cleaning....sometimes means that you will be "bothered" by your pesky pet who wants and seeks your attention. This is the signal for you to also work on the dominance issues that you may have with your dog. Your dog needs to learn to respect your space, to respect your property, and to respect YOU as the leader of the pack. A good way to do this is to make certain that when your dog is beginning to demand attention from you at a time when you can not give him the attention, you do NOT give in to your dog. Some of the ways you can do this are as follows: Nudge him away. Tell him "not now" and purposely push him back with your knee, or walk into him. Then turn your body away from your dog and studiously ignore him. These techniques will teach your dog that you are not going to allow him to "bother" you when you are busy.
On the other hand, you should never get so wrapped up in other activities that you completely ignore your dog. He has given you his life and his complete and total faithful companionship. You need to remember to return the favor!
Winter time is a great time to catch up on dog related learning for yourself. Read a new book about dogs and showing. Read a good book about TRAINING., too.
There is no substitute for exercise!
Besides, walking is good for the soul.
Walking is a special time that you can share with your dog. If you have multiple dogs, sometimes it is a nice treat for just ONE DOG and you to take a walk together and it gives both of you some quality time. so that is a nice thing to do every now and then.
If you enjoy roller skating or skijoring, this is a great way to excecise your dog. Hook him up to a harness and he can pull you right along. Of course, this is for the bigger breeds, I'm afraid this just wouldn't work for a chihuahua.
And that is another thing I should mention. sometimes folks think that because a dog is small, he doesn't need exercise. Not true. Small dogs have a higher metabolism rate than bigger dogs do and have plenty of energy to burn. Carrying them aound everywhere can lead to obesity Most small dogs handle exercise quite well.
A list of things to do with your dog:
"nose work" with your dog is always GREAT fun and good for the dog and you too!
2.Play flyball with your dog.
3. Give your dog a haircut and bath.
4. Go for a walk to the dog park. if you dont have a dog park and want to let him run, see if there is a tennis courts or a ball diamond you can turn him loose in for awhile.
5. Take him to the playground and let him climb up the slide the wrong way.
6. Teach him to play hide and seek in your house. (get a blanket and hide under it in the and then call the dog, see what happens!!)
6. Take him for a swim.
7. Let the dog get into the shower with you.
8. Take him for a walk to the ice cream store and let him have a lick or two of your ice cream cone.
9.If he is a city dog, take him to a farm to visit horses and cows (through the fence)
10. If he is a country dog, take him to the city for a walk down Main Street.
11.Teach him to roll over and play dead when you say "BANG!"
