A national symbol of Australia is the kangaroo. It is important to the national image and the Australian culture. Because of this there are numerous popular culture references. It is depicted on some Australian coins, it is a symbol of many Australian organizations and it is also depicted on the Australian coat of arms. Because they are always moving forward and never move backwards they were selected as a symbol of Australia to represent the country progress. But a kangaroo is not interesting only because of facts connecting them to Australia but also because of their exceptional skills which will be discussed below.

Information about kangaroos

The largest living marsupial from the family Macropodidae ('large foot')is actually the kangaroo. They live in groups or mobs. Kangaroo's legs are powerful hind and large. They have a small head, their tail is long and muscular for balancing, and they also have their large feet adapted for leaping,. Like most marsupials, female kangaroos have a pouch called a marsupium. This is a place where little kangaroo's complete postnatal development. The largest is the Red Kangaroo. Males can grow over 7 ft , this is 210 cm tall and weigh over 200 lbs which is around 90 kg. So they can be taller and heavier then a human. Their color is bright maroon but their underparts and faces are white. Blue flayers are called the females and their colour is blue-gray. They are smaller but can be faster than the males. Some of them can climb well and can leap from branch to branch, and this ones are called Wallabies and they are the smallest.

A fact

A boomer or a buck or »an old man« is called a male kangaroo. A female kangaroo's name is a flayer or a doe and a baby kangaroo is called a joey.

Baby kangaroo

Kangaroo females have a pouch surrounding the teats. After a gestation period of around 40 days a young kangaroo(joey) is born in an immature state. It is suckled in the mother's pouch for about six months. They are frequently returning to the mothers punch after they begin to graze until they are to big to be carried. They are returning to punch because of the shelter and transport that they get from it. He leaves the punch completely between 7 and 10 months of age after he becomes more and more active and spend a lot of time outside the pouch.

Sheep and cattle chambered stomachs are much alike to a stomach of the kangaroo. The vegetation that they have eaten they first regurgitate, chew it as cud, and then for the final digestion they swallow it again. The diets they have depends of the specie of kangaroos, but no matter what they are all strict herbivores. When a joey grows up he still drinks milk from a teat in its mother's pouch regardless of his size.

Why are Kangaroos hopping?

Were you ever asking yourself why kangaroo hop? This is because their legs cannot move independently of one another. While they are moving by hopping on its hind legs their tail is used for balancing and steering while hopping at speed up to 40mph/60kmh and bound 25 feet (8 meters) in a single leap. When kangaroo is not moving or moving very slowly their tail is used as an extra leg and as a support to the kangaroo when it is standing still.

The kangaroo has always been a very important animal for Australian Aborigines. They are important because of their bone, hide, meat and tendon. In the interaction with humans they are known as shy and retiring and in normal circumstances they present no threat to humans. Male kangaroos often "box" amongst each other, more or less playfully, or for dominance, or in competition for mates. There are very few records of kangaroos attacking humans without provocation. They attack only in case if they feel threatened. Other causes for attacking behaviour can be an extreme thirst and hunger.

Kangaroo crossing

Fact #2

Kangaroos can get in a conflict with vehicles quite often. They can be starled by engine noise and often dazzled by headlights and because of this they can leap in front of cars. That is why, "kangaroo crossing" signs are seen a lot in Australia.

If a female is the victim of a car crash, animal welfare groups ask that her pouch be checked for any surviving joey. They are later removed for a rehabilitation to a wildlife sanctuary or veterinary surgeon.

Sometimes individuals take care of a recovered joey themselves. They have a good chance of growing up properly if they are already covered with fur at the time of the car crash. They have to feed them with a milk that is lactose free because otherwise a blindness can be developed. If you offer them a cloth bag on a height where their mother pouch would be, they would hop right into it. Kangaroos are extremely reduced in numbers now because they are extensively hunted. This is because many types of them have valuable hides, because they compete with domestic livestock for grazing land.

How did Kangaroos got their name?

For the end here is an explanation how the kangaroo got its name. When for the first time European explorers saw these amazing, big, strange hopping animals they asked a Aborigine(a native Australian) how do they call them. He replied "kangaroo" what actually means "I don't understand" your question. And the explorers did not know that Aborigines do not understand them and thought this was the animal's name. And that's how the kangaroo became The Kangaroo.
