The Fountains Are Turned On In April

Fountain Day April 10, 2012

The area fountains were turned on by the Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department on Fountain Day, Tuesday, April 10th. The official celebration was held at the Marlborough Plaza Fountain at Paseo & 79th Street.

Kansas Citians love our fountains and we look forward to seeing the fountains turned on signaling the end of winter when we start enjoying outdoor activities once again.

The City of Fountains Foundation is planning a special event at the Henry Bloch Fountain (Main and Pershing) in the Spring of 2013 to celebrate the Foundation's 40th anniversary. If you would like to be part of the planning and activities, call the office at (816) 842-2299.

Plaza Lights by Brian Hillegas

The Plaza Lights are one of Kansas City's most favorite traditions which draws more than 500,000 people to The Country Club Plaza on Thanksgiving night. The streets are full of folks who come to celebrate at Kansas City's favorite shopping and dining destination. The lights turn on every evening at 5pm from Thanksgiving until mid January.

Beginning in 1930, the lighting ceremony is the official kick off of the holiday season for Kansas City. The famous ceremony, which began as 16 lights hung over a doorway, now includes over 80 miles of lights with 280,000 multi-colored bulbs outlining and illuminating the buildings and towers of the Country Club Plaza.

What's Your Favorite Thing About Kansas City?

Well, I am blushing. I learned something here today, but now I feel kinda dumb. I always knew that there was a Kansas City in Missouri and a Kansas City next door in KS, but I thought that they were two different cities. Like the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Well, now I know :) I enjoyed your lens and hope to one day visit the city (singular) of Kansas City!
  • PatinKC Apr 11, 2012 @ 2:04 am | delete
Well, Dave, yes and no! No you are not dumb, and yes there are 2 Kansas City's. One is in the State of Missouri and one is in Kansas with different governments. However, you can go from one to the other without knowing it. Maybe I should make a lens on the differences. lol! We talk about the Greater Kansas City area which includes both Kansas Cities and several other smaller cities. Many of the attractions of GKC are located on the Missouri side and there for the use of all the GKC area.
