About me - karanta

Ranked #1,651 in Squidoo Community, #165,685 overall

Welcome :)

In this lens I want to tell you a bit about me.
It's a bit difficult for me, because English is not my native language.

The 3D woman on my avator is Vicky 1 from DAZ3D.
And no - she does not look like me ;)
I'm using her as my avator for about 6-7 years now :)

Who is "karanta"

My name is Kerstin and I am
- the wife of a wonderful husband
- the mother of a great son
- the daugther of a very beloved mother

(ok - that was the most important stuff :)..)

I live in a small village in Germany.

My main hobby is reading. I read nearly everything :) I prefer fantasy books, but even read some books my son has to read for the school. I have not so much free time for reading so I bought some audio books and when I'm painting something and don't have to pay attention to difficult things, I listen to those audio books :)

I also love to listen to music. I really like medieval songs from Lyriel or Steeleye Span for example. But I also like something like the music from Lord of the Dance or Poker face from Lady Gaga. The only thing I really dislike are german "Volksmusik" and german "Schlager". I don't know how to call those two music styles in English.

I'm working full time as a freelancer at home. It's nice to work at home - but usually my "working day" has seldem less than 10 hours or so. Often more.

Most of the time I'm modeling and making textures for Poser.I'm selling my products in several stores and I'm also doing commissioned work for DAZ3D and also for Smith Micro / Content Paradise .

But I also do a lot of graphic design.

Ok - I think this is enough about me :)

What does "karanta" mean?

A lot of people asked me what this name means :)
To be honest - I have absolutely no idea *lol*

When I started working on Poser stuff - I had to register at Renderosity Art Community and
I was not aware that this fantasy name (easy to remember when I had to log in)
would be my vendor name later.

But hey - I've seen much stranger names during the time I'm doing this job ;)

After some time this name was pretty well known in the Poser community and I did not want to change it any more.

Well - so I'm now "karanta" :)

Software

Lots of people asked me:

Which software do you use?
What can you recommend :)

*****************

I can only tell you, which software I use. No idea if that's the easiest or best software you can use for that work.

At the moment I'm working with Poser 7 or Pro. I have nearly all previous versions down to Poser 4 (which is similar to Poser Artist)

For modeling, I'm using Cinema 10 but want to learn also Modo.
Sometimes I use ZBrush for making morphs and displacement maps.

For texturing I use only Photoshop CS3 and sometimes Bodypaint (which is included in Cinema 10).

I have also Painter 9 - but I only use it seldom. It's a great software, but not really the best for the work I do.

Several months ago I bought Illustrator CS3. I do graphic designs for my Zazzle shop with it and also use it for making brushes for Photoshop.

Of course I have a lot more "smaller" software I use, but I think these are the most important "weapons" in my arsenal ;)

Learning DVDs

If you are interested in learning to use one of the software I mentioned above - I highly recommend trying your hands on video courses on DVD.

I have a lot of them. They are not cheap but I never regretted buying them.
You can just sit and look how something can be done. And sometimes (not always) it's easier to understand some things when you see them in a video instead of trying to understand a text in a book.

You have the possibility to buy such DVDs at Amazon for example.

An other possibility is to Lynda.com. They have a very large ammount of online videos. You can buy a memberships for a month for $25.

That sounds cheaper than the DVDs you can buy - but have in mind that you can only have a look at those videos online. You can not save them.
