How to make Photoshop brushes

Making Photoshop brushes is so easy.
Everybody can do that :)

I'll show you with Photoshop CS3 - but it can be done the same way with other versions.

This is a very basic tutorial for Photoshop beginners.

Start

Open a new document with a size of your choice.
Maybe 200 x 200 for a small brush.
The document needs to have a white background.

Paint something on the background :)

Simple Example

Have in mind....

..... everything you paint in black it's later opaque in your brush, what's white will be transparent. Different shades of gray will give a different tranceparency when you use the brush.

Interesting brushes

If you don't want to paint own brushes, you can make also very interesting brushes with your scanner.

Have a look around in your house for an interesting little object you could use.

You can use nearly everything :) Just be careful you don't make scratches on the glass of your scanner when you close it.

If you want to scan thicker pieces, you can not close your scanner...

That's what I do in that case:

Use a box (maybe from shoes or so) and cover it on the inside with white paper.
Put that box over your object and scan.

Ideas for items you could scan

These are just a few examples :) Experiment with other things too.
You will get some great results with avarage things.
  1. Sliced fruits or vegetables (use transparent foil when you scan that ;)...)
  2. Fabric
  3. Knittet things
  4. Sand (of course also with transparent foil)
  5. Small stones
  6. Leaves
  7. Grass
  8. Jewellery
  9. Crunched paper

Free Brushes

It's very important that you carefully read the licence / terms of use for brushes you download. A lot of brushes are free for private use but NOT for commercial use.

If a brush set has not license or readme included and you don't know if it's free for commercial use - ask before you use it.
