Karla Bourque, aka chicandsavvy

I'm a typical girl that loves gorgeous things, and this is me. I enjoy photography, travel, graphic arts, poetry, and writing. Most of the time, I'm a practical, "down to earth" kind of gal. I'm just kidding. I've been of a mind to hover in the stratosphere from time to time as I chase my imagination. But here on planet earth, I love soft comfy clothes, a cup of hot coffee, organic munchies, and family and friends. For me, the simple things in life are chic and savvy.

Cerebral Flotsam

My Body of Work

chicandsavvy on Cafe PressMy creative career path is a mish mash of unfocused cerebral flotsam. I've been writing all my life and have had my scattered success. I've been published in magazines and a local newspaper. I've written ad copy and marketing projects for business.

Now, I'm exploring forgotten dreams that were cast aside years ago, because I guess I wanted to do other stuff back then. Now, I'm moving forward by taking a look back. I once aspired to be a cover artist for the music industry. My plan was to combine photography with artistic special effects.

The dream is calling anew to learn graphic design merged with photography. With computer programs like Adobe and Corel available and the explosion of digital photography, a complete graphic studio is possible at my fingertips. I've made up my mind to learn this.

Just Getting Started with "Alien Plant Eyes"

My brand new shop focuses on artistic designs by myself and my family members. The section that belongs to me is named, you guessed it, "Cerebral Flotsam". This is the first artistic project that I completed by design on CafePress. More artwork is in the planning stages.

My Twisted Bucket List

Or "Goals From a Cracked Pot"

These are all serious goals for me. Just kidding, some are real goals I'm determined to achieve on planet earth; some are best pursued only in my stratosphere. All these goals are awesome and will be achieved on some level before I "kick the bucket".

Buster
**This is Buster.
  • 1Roller skate through a crowded mall while shouting, "The monkeys did it!"
  • 2Zip lining while dressed as a medieval court jester.
  • 3Obtain a set of gold vampire contacts and wear them to a local mortuary while shopping for coffins.
  • 4Buy a star and name it "Buster B".
  • 5Invent my own awesome catch phrase like shooba dooba doobada or something. . . still working on it.
  • 6Get a tattoo of a crazy blue dragonfly. Check. Did it.
  • 7Avoid being the focus of any and all viral videos.
  • 8Invent a new game for kids.
  • 9Grow giant vegetables in the hopes I'll get one that looks like a dead president.
  • 10Learn all the words to Dr. Horrible's Sing Along and perform a dramatized reenactment.
  • 11Become a squid angel.
  • 12Become a giant squid.

Dr. Horrible Sing Along Karaoke

A Man's Gotta Do

I couldn't resist sharing Dr. Horrible. The cast in this sing along classic features Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, and Felicia Day. This is a "must achieve" point on the bucket list. Warning: Two mild swear words here.

Something For Everyone

I Aim to Please Through Variety

I enjoy passion and curiosity on a variety of topics. I hope it translates for some interesting reading. Besides the nostalgic draw to experiment with graphic design and photography, I'm passionate about green living. I'm learning more every day about conservation, organic food, and social political problems such as fair trade involvement.

I hope my writing will provide much needed support for Squidoo sponsored charities that promote these ideals. One of my favorite sponsored charities is Women's Future Benefit as this organization works for fair trade worldwide to stop poverty and exploitation of women, children, and the disabled.

I also appreciate travelling to new destinations that provide opportunities for exploring nature. I'm happy to write about the unique features of any interesting place I visit. I've created a few lenses on these subjects as well as others. And so many other things are always floating around inside my head.

So there, we have it-- a little insight into the strange and interesting mind of me, Karla Bourque. Have I entertained you? I write only what pleases me. I invite visitors to read only what pleases as well.

Karla's Favorite Book

This year's favorite read

Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Phd. gives unique insight into the various stages and initiations of womanhood. Her viewpoint is expressed through knowledge of Jungian psychology and ancient mythologies that portray the archetypes of the feminine psyche.

Women Who Run with the Wolves

Amazon Price: $2.99 (as of 06/02/2012)Buy Now

I love mythology, and I found this author's writing style to be so poignant and poetic that it brought tears to my eyes. This is a beautiful book. I can't say I run with wolves yet, but I'm working up to that. Just kidding, I run with Buster, my dog. I'll probably stick to that. I'm a woman that runs with Buster.

More About Karla Bourque

I'm a native Texan, but lived in Oklahoma for about fourteen years. Now, I work and live just south of Houston with my darling husband of twenty-seven years, my lovely daughters, and my dog, Buster. So far, I've travelled throughout the North American southwest and Mexico. I have hopes of extending my travels in the future.

On weekends, we enjoy nature hikes, urban exploring, and decorating our new house. We also like to kick off our shoes in front of a good movie. We read good books and fill volumes of puzzle books with our amazing knowledge of all things trivial.

I love writing for Squidoo and will enthusiastically sponsor anyone that wants to join. Just give chicandsavvy as a referral. Here's wishing a creative adventurous life for all. Thanks for reading.

Enough About Me

Karla's Favorite Movie

Of the Year

Eat Pray Love [Blu-ray] [Blu-ray] (2010)

Amazon Price: $18.24 (as of 06/02/2012)Buy Now

I found this movie to be incredibly inspiring. I like the idea that an ordinary person can achieve a sense of growth by doing something simple like eat, pray, and love. Especially, the eating. I really like eating. I've got that step down. I know this because I've grown (more than one way). Yup, I've really focused a bit too much on the eating.
