Feudal Japan to Modern Days

It was early on during the 14th century when the technique for forging katanas was developed by a Japanese blacksmith by the name of Masamune. It is this technique of blending two different blends of steel (high-carbon and low-carbon) that made the katanas famously strong at has the ability to keep its sharp edge without breaking under pressure. Masamune is widely considered as Japan's greatest blacksmith and swordsmith as represented in Japanese Sword Making competition. The competition gives out the Masamune award in this annual competition since 1955.

Samurais are the wielders of the katanas. And Samurais are part of the military nobility or the upper crust of the military in feudal Japan. Samurai were considered part of the nobility and they received higher education that was bestowed on the upper class and priests. Samurais follow a set of rules or code known as the Bushido. And according to Bushido, the katana, though only one of the few or several weapons a samurai may have at any point during battle, is considered the samurai's soul.

In fact, during World War II, in the heat of modern warfare of weapons that fire from a long distance, the katanas were seen on the sides of some Japanese officers. These signified their rankings among the Army and serves as inspiration to their mobile infantry. When an attack was called, the officers would raise their katanas not to inflict harm on the enemy but to inspire their soldiers to push on and live by the code that has been the code of the samurai for centuries. The katana sword lived through the ages and came out at the other end, just as important, just as revered even in the modern era.
