Kate's Angel Blessings

Ranked #4,466 in Squidoo Community, #303,521 overall

As I describe in my latest Squidoo Diary lens I was privilged to become a Squidoo Angel in autumn 2009. Many Angels produce a lens to outline their view of the world, and give some clues as to what they are looking for when deciding whether to bless a lens - although there are no hard and fast rules! This lens is my own flutter. If you like the picture (© all rights reserved, Kate Phizackerley) then you can find out more about my original artwork on this lens. It's also available as a Christmas Card.

I hung up my wings at the end of December 2009.

Purple Star

As well as being a Giant and former Angel, I am also a Purple Star lensmistress. Please take a look at my own Purple Star lenses.

Bad Faith Lenses

One thing I dislike are bad faith lenses. Lenses which promised in the title to tell the reader everything about Visiting New York or Keeping Rabbits as Pets but which have a tiny amount of text, often clipped from Wikipedia, followed by loads of adverts.

If people do that on socially important topics like Poverty in Africa or Alcohol Dependency then I'm likely to consider dinging the lens.

Business Lenses

Angels can bless great lenses in any category but so that we don't all concentrate on popular categories, we are each asked to pay particular attention to certain assigned categories. One of my assigned categories is Business.

My personal focus is B2B, business education and professional lenses. It's easier to write high quality lenses on these sorts of subjects, but I'll also bless any great B2C or retail lenses. When looking for lenses to bless, I'm looking for lenses which are well presented and which have great content and for business lenses content actually on the lens is what I regard as the most important.

Here's a selection of my own business lenses.

Health Lenses

Health on Squidoo seems to be a really spammy subject. There are a lot of SquidDon't lenses (remember Angels can ding lenses as well as bless them), and many more which flirt with the boundary in an unhealthy way.

There are some really good health lenses as well. They tend to be highly informative and include resources for people to look up and lots of diagrams. They may mention treatments but they don't sell them hard. To be perfectly honest I find it somewhat contemptible to push a cure for an affliction unless you genuinely are certain that it works. In fact, these days under FDA regulations pushing a dodgy medical product for affiliate commissions could lead to prosecution. I hope they do pursue people who try to make money out of other people's illnesses without care for whether the cure works.

If you are claiming product has a health benefit you should cite and link to a proper published, academic research paper. I'm liable to be sceptical of any unsubstantiated claims and and significantly less likely to bless a lens which doesn't make verifying the health claims it makes easy to do.

I tend to write about genetics. Here are some of my own lenses.

Local Lenses

There's an overlap between Travel and Local (another of my special categories), but some lenses are clearly one or the other. There aren't that many Local lenses so it's a good category to write in if you wish to get noticed.

Great Local lenses swarm with detail. Photos are great too, but it's adding detail that matters, which for my taste should be a personal view on the location. The best travel books have an "I've been there myself and these are my personal tips" feel and that's what makes a great local lens!

A good example I think are my lenses on Tomales in California. Tomales is a small roadside town in Marin County just north of San Francisco. I'm very pleased with me lens. As it's a US town, there are also some special modules I've used.

The owner of the most distintive building in town, a former bank, got in touch and kindly sent me so photos of his property. I used them to create a lens just about that building. That's a niche lens for you!
