How To Read The Temperance Brennan Books In Order
Kathy Reichs is not only a novelist, but a real forensic anthropologist, a real CSI. No wonder that her books and the TV series Bones have become so popular, since the CSI themed books and shows on TV are dominating the minds and hearts of so many of us.
What you might not know, though, is that Kathy Reichs has also written a couple of non-fiction academic books, and she has started a new series for YA (young adults), which is a bit of departure from Temperance Brennan, but it's a really fun one, worth trying.
So let's see how to read the Kathy Reichs books in order of publishing, starting from the Temperance Brennan series, aka the Bones books in order.

"People love the cliffhanger endings to chapters, ... I get a lot of comments that I've changed people's lives, how they've never read and now they have, how they were depressed and now they have a passion."
The Temperance Brennan Series
Deja Dead (Temperance Brennan #1)
Deja Dead (Temperance Brennan Novels)
Amazon Price: $0.99 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
Deja Dead is the first of the Kathy Reichs books in order. In fact it's her first novel ever, which won the 1997 Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel. This is the book that also got me acquainted with Temperance Brennan and I got hooked every since. Previously I used to read the Kay Scarpetta novels, but I must admit, I somehow like Temperance Brennan much more.
This first story follows Temperance Brennan who leaves behind a shaky marriage and moves to Quebec to be the Director of Forensic Anthropology. Her first case is an unidentified female corpse dismembered and stashed in plastic trash bags. It's a gripping story, one that I couldn't stop reading.
Death du Jour (Temperance Brennan #2)
Death du Jour (Temperance Brennan Novels)
Amazon Price: $2.97 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
Written in 1999, the second book in the Temperance Brennan series, Death du Jour follow her to her second case, quite a gory one as well. If you want to learn some weird new things about maggots, then this book is for you.
I like these books because they're written by a real forensic anthropologist who knows her stuff, and the writing and descriptions show it. If you like mystery, action, suspense and a dash of romance (with gory details in between), that's a recipe for you right there.
Deadly Decisions Temperance Brennan #3)
Deadly Decisions (Temperance Brennan, No. 3)
Amazon Price: $3.50 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
This books starts with a 9 year old girl being accidentally killed during a motorcycle gang killing. Tempe Brennan has to figure out how the skull of the teen is next to two skeletons of bikers and what is the connection here. Again, the story is told in first person and the details are gruesome enough to make one squeamish flinch. But if you like CSI, you won't put this book down until you finish the last page.
Fatal Voyage (Temperance Brennan #4)
Fatal Voyage (Temperance Brennan Novels)
Amazon Price: $2.70 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
The fourth book was written in 2001, and this is just as great as the previous ones in the series. The scene in this case is a horrible plane crash in North Carolina, where Temperance Brennan has to solve the case with her forensic skills. If you're squeamish, you might flinch a bit at the naked and brutal descriptions of the victim's remains. For example during her examinations, she finds a leg that does not belong at the site.
The book offers again suspense and mystery, along with a great story telling that is so characteristic of Kathy Reichs. Loved this one!
Grave Secrets (Temperance Brennan #5)
Grave Secrets
Amazon Price: $2.55 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
Grave Secrets is book number 4 in the Temperance Brennan series by Kathy Reichs, and it's just as engaging as the previous books. Written in 2002, this book follows Tempe as she examines the gruesome remains of a woman left in a septic tank. She is now working in Guatemala trying to sort the body parts of a massacre left behind during a previous bloody civil war in the country. This is when she finds the remains in the septic tank that intrigue her to search for answer. And she usually finds them, along with a lot of things that we can privy to as well.
This is the first book that is set in another country and the change of scenery is a good thing to keep the story going in the right direction. A great read.
Bare Bones (Temperance Brennan #6)
Bare Bones: A Novel (Temperance Brennan Novels)
Amazon Price: $2.82 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
Next comes Bare Bones, written in 2003, following again Tempe Brennan in one of her new adventures. I found this so far this book has the most action happening, it's faster paced, and that's a good thing, as you never really get bored here. While "trying" to have some vacation time with her boyfriend, Andrew Ryan, she finds the remains of a child, which invariably pull her back to work. A really great and fast read.
Monday Mourning (Temperance Brennan #7)
Monday Mourning: A Tempe Brennan Novel (Temperance Brennan Novels)
Amazon Price: $0.75 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
Next comes Monday Mourning, a book written in 2004. This time Tempe is back in Montreal, where she tackles the discovery of 3 skeletons in the cellar of a pizza parlor. The plot is again great, engaging and suspenseful enough to keep you going till you finish the last page. I love all the forensic details that are given in the book (something that the Kay Scarpetta books seems to lose with every new book written).
Cross Bones (Temperance Brennan #8)
Cross Bones (Temperance Brennan Novels)
Amazon Price: $3.90 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
The 8th book in the Temperance Brennan series, I found this book to be so far the weakest 'link'. Not quite sure why, but it didn't engage me as much as the previous books did. Tempe is thrown into historical times (apparently doing forensic work on the bones of Jesus Christ), and as some other reviewers also mentioned, this book somehow reminds me of the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. Except Da Vinci Code was better.
Break No Bones (Temperance Brennan #9)
Break No Bones: A Novel (Temperance Brennan Novels)
Amazon Price: $0.01 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
Finally the real Temperance Brennan is back in this 9th book in the series. This time Tempe has to teach a boring field class South Carolina at a burial site. The problems start, of course, when the bones of a much newer body is discovered in a place that should only hold old bones.
I really enjoyed this book, a refreshing return to the 'old' Tempe that was let down in the previous one in the series. This one goes again full force ahead with gore, suspense, mystery and .. .did I say gore? Loved it!
Bones to Ashes (Temperance Brennan #10)
Bones to Ashes: A Novel (Temperance Brennan Novels)
Amazon Price: $2.99 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
Book 10 was written in 2007. In this book her case gets a bit more personal. She has to find an old friend of hers, Évangéline Landry, who vanished some time ago. When she finds the skeletons of an adolescent girl in Acadia, she can't but wonder whether these remains are of her old, lost friend.
Thrilling, exciting, and a great study in forensic anthropology, as usual.
Devil Bones (Temperance Brennan #11)
Devil Bones: A Novel (Temperance Brennan)
Amazon Price: $2.00 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
When reading the Kathy Reichs books in order, you'll find that Devil Bones is #11. Quite a few things happened since the beginning of the series, and now Tempe Brennan's latest case calls her to examine a "chamber of horrors", which includes skeleton remains of animals and people all thrown together. While I like my books a bit faster in pace, this one was a bit of a letdown because I found it a tad slower. It had a lot of historical background, touching on paganism, which I found distracted a little from the actual plot.
However I still enjoyed this novel, and I found it rewarding in the end.
206 Bones (Temperance Brennan #12)
206 Bones: A Novel (Temperance Brennan)
Amazon Price: $0.43 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
Finally a book that starts with a bang. Tempe Brennan finds herself cuffed and injured in an underground crypt. Yep, that's how the book starts, full with a punch. A fast paced thriller with great characters, this book will keep you reading to the end. It was again one of my favorites in the series.
Spider Bones (Temperance Brennan #13)
Spider Bones (Tempe Brennan)
Amazon Price: $0.16 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
I've read this book very recently to catch up with the series, so I have it still clearly in mind. It's the 13th book and if you've read the Kathy Reichs books in order, then you know that you're off to a great read again. The plot in this novel goes from Montreal to North Carolina, all the way to Hawaii, and it's quite complex, as usual. One thing I found a bit strange in this book is that there was not one clear plot - there were many parallel ones. Some people might find this off-putting, but Kathy Reichs pulled it off quite nicely, however.
It's full of twists and turns, mystery, thrill and gore, and it's fast paced as well. What more could you want for? Oh yes, a newer book in the series!
Note: in the UK this book is called Mortal Remains (I think also in Australia).
Flash and Bones (Temperance Brennan #14)
Flash and Bones
Amazon Price: $4.97 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
So far her latest Tempe Brennan book, this is the 14th in the well known and well loved series. I read #13 and #14 in one go, within 2 days, to catch up. Now I have to wait a few more months, until book #15 called Bones are Forever will be published (I think in August).
Flash and Bones is all about NASCAR, and it's a 'fast and furious' read. As a corpse is found in a barrel of asphalt, the Race Week festivities are put on hold until the situation is examined - by dr. Tempe Brennan herself.
I really enjoyed this book and while I found a few of her earlier ones a bit slow going, the last book simply can't be put down, it's all fast paced action, especially if you're a NASCAR fan.
Bones Are Forever (Temperance Brennan #15)
Bones Are Forever: A Novel (Temperance Brennan)
Amazon Price: $16.67 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
Her 15th book in the Temperance Brennan series is available August this year, but you can preorder it right now to make sure you get it shipped the minute it becomes available.

The Tory Brennan Series
Virals (Tory Brennan #1)
Virals
Amazon Price: $3.87 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
Virals follows Tory Brennan, Tempe's niece in her own story. This book is for young adults, and it's quite different from the previous series. Tory is 14 and right from the start she jumps into action with her friends on the island where she lives with her father. While the style is indeed different, it's a great read: it has suspense, mystery, a great plot, tension and drama. A great recipe for a great new YA novel start.
The only thing I hope is that Kathy Reichs also continues her Tempe Brennan books, which made her popular in the first place.
Seizure (Tory Brennan #2)
Seizure
Amazon Price: $10.37 (as of 06/01/2012)![]()
Seizure is the latest book written by Kathy Reichs in the Tory Brennan series. This time pirates and treasures are the highlight of the day. Full of puzzles, mystery and suspense, it's a great, fast paced read, which you will love especially if you care about YA genre, which seems to be all the rage these days.

- The only book of Kathy Reichs's books that I have read is 206 Bones. I enjoyed it very much, but I didn't realize that there were more. I'm going to have to start with the first one and read my way through them all.

- I like Kathy Reichs better than Patricia Cornwell because is is not as graphic. I don't need to be told in minute detail what is happening on an autopsy table. Yuck. But her books are good and worth reading. Blessed.

- I liked the 1st 10 Kathy Reichs books, but The Devil Bones was really disappointing and I stopped reading after that one. I like that the books take place partly in Quebec, where I'm from. Who would have thought that a major U.S. author would have a book with a climatic ending taking place in St Lambert?!

- I've read a number of Kathy Reichs Temperance Brennan books, and have seen many episodes of Bones, and I enjoy them all. I didn't know that there are books out now about Temp's niece, Tory. It sounds like it's geared toward a younger generation of readers, but I'm going to check it out too!

- Yes, looks like Kathy Reichs also got the 'YA' craze bug (young adult). Most of the new fictional stories are geared towards the YA generation. The Tory books are great too, albeit a bit different in style.
