ABOUT Kathy Ostman-Magnusen
I am an artist, I paint and sculpt women primarily; in their daily lives, in lives they might be afraid of, and in lives they wish they had. My goal has always remained the same; to hear them breathing and to know the passion I feel in my soul is met by theirs.
It is not possible to feel apathetic while standing next to passion. I don't paint landscapes to hang above someone's couch, paintings meant to be a resting place for the mind? I want to paint feelings that one cannot dismiss. I hope to stir up feelings that overwhelm within the viewer as well as myself. It is not my goal to feel nothing but a sunny day or peacefulness, shiny trinkets that rest on walls that can be walked away from. I want to paint women who feel something. I paint myself as I define it and revel in the fact that I am made whole by my own journey of introspection.
I want to paint strength, sexuality, pain, power, a force of intensity, emotional qualities that generate a reaction. I don't want to paint the sky, I want to paint the dominance of the wind that caused it to be felt on ones skin, in the form of a woman. I pick up my brush or clay between my fingers and consider a certain belligerence, an attitude of confidence that meets the power I need to form an energy outside myself and I welcome it in. I paint or sculpt until I hear them breathing and their breath becomes my own.
In every single one of my paintings my objective is to 'know them' . To let each one reveal their own vision or message. I am often astounded as their presence unfolds & I am met with who they are. I then realize that who 'they' are, defines me as well. My hope is that my paintings & sculptures relate to you, their audience & that they give you the message you need for your own heart and soul.<br.

About my Self Portraits:
The "Primal Series", of a woman, me, not in her teens or even her 20's, is something that addresses issues important to a lot of women. Am I sexy? Am I pretty? Am I confident in who I am? Am I free to explore ideas, once hidden? So many questions answered for my own self and hopefully for other women my age, or any age for that matter.
I am not going to disappear just because I am not in my 20's or 30's or 40's.. wow. That is the way it has felt at times. Strange.
Mental notes of understanding who we are under the veil of who we hoped we would be as women or who we think we lost, are embraced by me within the cloak of all women.
Exploring that sexual side; embracing my own desires and trying to not just understand them but find out what they are! So many feeling for various reasons are pushed down and made incidental because society has claimed they should feel uncomfortable.
Finding any sense of rawness seems crazy past 40. But why? That is what I think I am finally concluding. As a lot of women get older they tend to feel themselves disappear. I am one. I see though through this whole series that I am working on, digging inside myself to find that essence of sexiness that is woman; hearing tiny cries from those emotions hid from my own self and letting them see the light of day is luscious! Its not about being defined by others as being sexy, letting others decide my fate in how I feel about myself.. its about ME accepting who I really am and having the confidence to bring it all out on canvas. To not only see it but embrace and shine in it.
I want reach deeper and find all the things about my own sexuality that have always been mine to know. I want to understand the passion I long to paint and comprehend what those emotions are.
Passion has a sense of violence about it, it is strong and it survives aggression. I don't want to paint passive art.. I want feel the obsession of lust inside its raw and primal pursuit. Within passion one finds a boldness full of enticing ambitions to grasp on to, that piece of your heart that presses you to go past the mark of a bystander, that spot you may have been told to stay put on.
It is not possible to feel apathetic when standing next to passion.
I paint or sculpt until I hear them breathing and their breath becomes my own.
I paint myself as I try to define the energy that is indeed my own sexuality but also all women whether they accept that part of themselves or not.

Don't say morning's come

If I could take twenty five minutes
Out of the record books
Sugar, he brings me Sugar

And hammers, he used one on me
Cold war with little boys
Get in with a bubble gum trade and
Sugar, bring me Sugar
And all the robins bring, bring me many things but
Sugar, he brings me Sugar
As far as I can tell
I've been gone for miles now
You know, and I know I don't know me very well

Kathy Ostman-Magnusen Interview 1
1. When was the first time that you remember realizing that you are a creative person? When I was around 4 years old. My parents drove from State to State discovering America or maybe just chasing rainbows. I sat in the back seat of the car drawing, singing and looking out the window, imagining. I didn't speak one single word until I was over two. My Dad always said it was because I had nothing to say. Debatable of course. I may have been somewhat Autistic. As I got older and went to school, I was put in the back of the room often with my back towards the class. Another teacher put me in a dark closet. I was always being told to stop daydreaming.
2. When did you know that this was what you wanted to do with your life?
I never understood it could be an option to do art for my life until I was out of high school. I was never encouraged in that direction and so I guess I just thought it was something to do alone in my room.
How did you get started?
I started selling paintings to neighbors and stuff when I was around 18. It still was not taken seriously.. just something I could do to contribute to the grocery bill. From there I developed a wholesale pottery business with my x husband. We took a 6 week class on pottery in Adult Ed, saved up money for a kiln and moved to the mountains. It advanced to selling to most National Parks, Disney World, JC Penny's and 1000+ mom and pop stores. We had reps all over the US and had 8 contracted workers. That was 'production pottery' though,, and even though it was all wheel thrown and hand sculpt, I am not sure that I consider that to be an art. It was an art remaining sane thought! I sculpted 120-160 faces a day on beer steins, while my x threw a stein every 40 seconds. I must say too that I hated it from the first day, but continued to do that for 20 years. I Painted and did sculptures all the while too. We also self published booklets that went with musical tapes to enhance stories we had written.
I later left my x and married my HS Sweetheart. I never make two of anything now, unless it is a giclee or print or something that I don't have to duplicate myself. It has been within these past 12 years that I have developed myself as an artist. Ups and downs along the way.
3. What traits, if any, do you think that creative people have as compared to people who are not creative?
Sensitivity. I tell people all the time that desire is talent and the rest is practice. I don't believe in the notion that people cannot draw a strait line. They were never taught how, that's all. I feel that if someone 'wishes' they were an artist? They are. So they better get to work on their dream.
4. Do believe that your training has influenced what you create?
I am self taught. I think anything we need to know is in books or practice. I have taken some sculpture classes though. I do feel that by being self taught I have found my way to my style, where with someone's outside influence I may never have. I paint and sculpt by instinct, not rules. I am not sure that you can teach the emotion that it takes to 'see' and implement, what it would take to bring breath to a painting or sculpture. It all goes back to desire.. and an inner voice.
5. Have you ever felt that your personal expectations have limited your creativity?
If so, how have you dealt with this?
Oh sure If you try to please just one person.. maybe you will be successful.. maybe. But if you go beyond that you will never do it. I am easily influenced, so I have to be careful who I ask, what of. I want to sell and be famous.. I think everybody does. As I go to my canvas I am in turmoil about who to please and what will benefit my career. Sometimes that has to be considered to make grocery money, so I paint what I need to. Other times I tell myself that I need to reach inside.. pull out that nebulous insight and slather that on the canvas instead. The latter is the only way to get better as an artist I feel. It is a real battle. I am not sure I have solved it either.
6. Have other people supported or inspired you? Please explain.
Not my parents. I think they did not consider me to be all that bright, because even as I grew older, I didn't talk all that much. When I was in High School I painted or drew or whatever.. only women. When I would ask my teacher if I could have some materials, he would ask me what I was going to draw, etc. "A girl!" I would always say. He would kind of frown at me then reluctantly give me what I asked for. I used to do pastel with these girls without tops on and only suspenders.. that would drive him crazy. One day he told me that there were some complaints from the office so I could not do that anymore.
It was not until I was around 18 when I started selling my oil paintings for $10-20. that I realized that I had talent. My x was supportive as long as I painted mountain scenes.. stuff like that. UG!
I would say that the most supportive person has been my husband Denny. He has sacrificed, encouraged, done battle when I wanted to give up and been my biggest cheering section.
7. How have you dealt with any criticism you have gotten because of your creative endeavors?
With inside criticism I tend to retreat and cry. It takes me awhile to recover and then I pick myself back up again and move forward. For me? Art is all there is, so it is a lot like making up with a boyfriend after a fight.
With other people it depends on who they are. If they have clout or know what they are talking about they can take me to my knees. If not? Screw em.
8. Do you ever feel that you have to censor your creativity because you don't want to offend anyone?
Oh gads.. yes! Big problem in American especially. I am working on an erotica series now because my gallery in New York that represents me, Monkdogz Urban Art, is going to do a show on it. They have guts and of course that is New York. I have done several paintings of erotica prior to that but most galleries want fluff and freak out with even a nipple..
9. Do you do anything special to get your "creative juices" flowing? Please explain.
Music.. that is huge. I sing my lungs out.. the louder the better. My husband always encourages me to meditate, even light candles.. but I tend to just plunge in. I think about art all of the time, so I figure that is enough meditation to get me there. When I get frustrated I tend to uncork a bottle of champagne or wine from time to time. People might not agree with me, say what they will, it works for me. I also totally mess up the canvas to start out.. everything from that point is an improvement.
10. Does your work convey a specific emotion or message?
My efforts are to convey passion. I paint and sculpt people, mostly women so emotions are a key element.
My newest Artist's Statement:
Passion has a sense of violence about it, it is strong and it survives aggression. I do not paint passive art.. I paint passion. Within passion one finds a boldness full of enticing ambitions to grasp on to, that piece of your heart that presses you to go past the mark of a bystander, the spot you may have been told to stay put on. No, it is not possible to feel passive when standing next to passion. I don't paint landscapes to hang above someone's couch, paintings meant to be a resting place for the mind? I paint feelings that one cannot just walk past. I hope to stir up emotions within the viewer. It is not my goal to feel nothing but a sunny day or peacefulness, shiny trinkets that rest on walls that can be walked away from. I paint women who feel something. Strength, sexuality, pain, power, a force of intensity, emotional qualities that generate a reaction. I don't paint the sky, I paint the dominance of the wind that caused it to be felt on ones skin, in the form of a woman. I pick up my brush or clay between my fingers and consider a certain belligerence, an attitude of confidence that meets the power I need to form an energy outside myself and I welcome it in. I paint or sculpt until I hear them breathing and their breath becomes my own.
11. If you could be any object, what would you be? Why?
I would go back and be that little girl in the back seat of her parents car. I consider her to be an object. I would reassure her that someday she would find her way.
12. What are your words of wisdom for someone starting out in your field?
It goes back to what I said in the beginning.. if you want to be an artist? YOU ARE! Desire is talent and the rest is practice. Believe in yourself.

What kind of art do YOU like?

Euphoria by Kathy Ostman-Magnusen
Lady Gaga - "Poker Face"
Kathy Ostman-Magnusen Interview 2
1.) How do you feel when you tell non-artists that you are an artist. What are some of the responses you get?
It depends on where their creativity scale is. Some people live with no art on their walls at all, those people do not understand art at all or they would want it around them.
If they care about art then obviously we have a base from which to understand one another.
2.) What is your favorite reaction to your work?
A connection with passion, understanding of the inner soul and its longing to be heard. It is those people I love hearing from.
Most deflating?
Dismissal. Someone who walks into a room filled to the brink with my art leaving no comment as if the room were blank.
3.) As an artist what do you feel the Internet has done for you
(positive/negative)?
20K - 30K entries on google, depending on the day. It is a great networking tool.
I spend way too much time on it when I should be painting or sculpting. It is so darn addictive.
4.) If I asked you to tell me one place to go and one thing to do there,
where and what would you suggest?
I used to walk along the Silver Strand in Imperial Beach, CA. I drew giant faces of women on the sand and danced around and sang to the top of my lungs, like the fairy I imagined me to be. I created a dragon out of drift wood who one day took flight. It is not that I would suggest going to the Silver Strand, it is that I would suggest to go to that spot of inhibition and fly there.
5.) When are you most creative and why do you think this is? E
The mornings are good for me. I am very sensitive to what the moon is doing too, it creates havoc or bliss. Creativity comes in waves. I paint for a couple of weeks non stop in a frenzy and then recover... but.. I still paint even after the bliss of it has left me. What brings these tangents on is unclear to me. It just comes over me.
6.) Who are you most inspired by; another artist, relative, pet?
Artists who show passion. I cannot stand art that is meant to cause the viewer to feel calm and think nothing. Why bother?
7.) Do you visualize your Art before creating?
Sometimes.. to a certain extent. Not always.
Do you know what it will
look like before you begin? What's your process?
It varies. Right now I am working on a series of self portraits/self discovery. It is an erotica series. I am taking tons of photos, soul searching, writing, trying to feel those spots of me that I used to shun.
8.) Did you choose Art or did Art choose you?
I have posted another interview at the bottom that speaks to this.
9.) Any advice for a new artist contemplating dedicating their life to Art?
I believe that desire is talent and the rest is practice, so get to work.. no excuses.
10.) Do you find yourself more attracted to work that is not like your own,
or work that has similarities to yours?
I am attracted to passionate work as I mentioned b4, so I seek that out for stimulation in music, photography, movies.. whatever.
11.) Which do you think is smarter for an emerging artist: pricing work
affordably to make it more accessible, or pricing work high, to make it more
precious?
Put yourself into perspective. Emerging artists always seem to price their work too high. I think this is because they are really not prepared to let go of it. Yet it irritates the hell out of me to see anyone sell their work for pennies, you also need to respect yourself.
12.) Do you aspire for your work to meet a need and, if so, do you have a
name for that need?
I am never sure if I hate it or love it with every fiber in me. It is a torture when not going well and haunts me to a fault.. I think of nothing else if I am not doing well and nothing else if I am. Its exhausting.
13.) Is there a separation between your "normal" life and your work. If so,
how do you manage to keep each in its place?
I don't.. it is everything so it touches everything. I am obsessed.
14.) Do you predetermine meaning in your work?
I am with this new series.
and/or, after you complete a
piece of art, do you feel the meaning needs justification/explanation?
I don't feel it needs anything at all to explain itself.. if people get it, they get it. If people don't get it then I accept the fact that we just don't connect.
I write this above and yet I have explained myself to the hilt on my website for my "In Search of Klimt" Series. I did that because content/text is what google is looking for my SEO and because I enjoy writing. I also feel that by writing about my art I understand myself more.
A dichotomy I know.
15.) Do you think that the notion of an artist's "style" is fabricated to
boost sales and marketability?
It depends on the artist of course. I do both. I live in Hawaii so I paint some stuff for tourists. Is it me? No, not all.
I am also represented in New York by Monkdogz Urban Art, which is much more edgy. I am working together with the gallery owner to push myself past what I have done before.. very exciting. That art would not do well in Hawaii... I don't even think I could find a gallery to hang it in Hawaii.
Are artists then forced to limit their body
of work to specific content or media in an effort to facilitate easy
recognition?
It depends on what an artist wants or is satisfied with. You can be a big fish in a little pond.. be recognized in Hawaii, which I do strive for because of $$$.
Or
You can try to make it in the big world, which is often like wanting to be a movie star. I confess I want that with every part of my being.
I want to strive towards excellence, self discovery even though I don't believe that either can ever be found. I believe that the very second you think you have arrived you are indeed finished.
16.) What causes artistic blocks? What do you do to solve them?
Laziness. I have a 20 year background in production pottery. Production pottery is a craft not an art but it taught me that no matter how you feel, you still do art anyway. No excuses.
17.) What question do you hate being constantly asked about your work?
How long did this take you to do?
18.) What helps create a suitable environment for making art (aside from
tools)?
I think people get caught up in that. They don't paint or whatever because their surroundings are too small or they have kids or whatever. I have painted in my kitchen when it was not big enough to turn around in. I have painted with children and cats running through my paints. It goes back to making excuses. If you want to do art.. truly? You will and it will not matter how small or right your environment is. With that said, I am painting in my garage right now because I am so messy. I blast the music, sing, and try to free myself to let the dance of creating art happen.
19.) How willing are you to remove yourself from your work?
I'm not.
20.) Do you ever forget or deliberately ignore why you make art? If so,
briefly describe the last time you realized you had forgotten or were
ignoring why you make art. What did it take for you to return to your core
motivation?
I just can't relate to this question. Art is like breathing to me.
21.) How has your art contributed to society?
I have no idea.. I can't be the judge of that.
22.) Do you think it's important that art gives something to society?
No. This doesn't mean though that I don't dream of being an 'Art Star', but I am not sure that has anything to do with 'contributing to society'. If you want to contribute to society.. what society exactly? There are so many factions, it feels impossible to please them. If I think that way I will find myself only painting fluff I think.
23.) What exhibit that you have seen within the last year has most
influenced you? Why?
Boy... I don't see much in Hawaii. It is all about tourists here. The most inspiration I find is online at Monkdogz with fellow artists there or on My Space as funny as that sounds. There are some amazing artists posting on My Space.
24.) Does getting paid for your artwork embarrass you? If so, why? If not,
why not?
Gads.. I have to get paid or I won't eat!
25.) Do you feel an art object's power is diminished or changed by having
assistants actually do the physical production? Explain.
Yes.. absolutely. If you have a giclee that is produced by a printer.. is the life of the artist somehow diminished? Artists enhance their work to add just a touch of life back to them but it is insignificant really, the work cannot breathe because it was tampered with by someone else. I used to work for an Italian sculptor. He signed his name to all my work.. customary of course.. but the arts presence belonged to me.

Kathy Ostman-Magnusen- How I Paint
An email sent to me:Hi Kathy!
I just came across your artwork the other day! I love the paintings of those fantasy women! Where did you get your idea to paint them??? They are amazing and I just love to look at them! I love to paint and draw, but sometimes I just dont know what to create. It is hard for me to just think of something and draw it; I have to see it to draw it. Do you have any advice????
Thank you!
Kristin : )
My answer:
Aloha Kristin,
Ahh you know what... I do art the very same way you do pretty much, so I so understand what you are talking about.
Anyway.. here are some of the things I do to make my art original. Aside from my new series, "Primal" which are all self portraits...there are two ways I do it.
One:
I find clips in fashion magazines that I like and keep files on them. I have subjects like eyes, poses, tropical, cirque du, etc. I got these file boxes for about $5. each and those files that hang and have them all organized. I have 4 of them.
I have a lot of books that I have gotten from sales on art books and I have also joined book clubs. I have how to books, books on famous artists, ones I just like like Jia Lu, and I collect children's books. I cannot tell you how many times I have used Trina Scart Hyman's hands in her fairy tale books.. just to be able to SEE.
With all of these things above I have indeed copied exactly what I have seen for practice. I have copied exactly pretty much from historic photos .. that is how a lot of my Hawaiian Legacy paintings were done. I just did them in sepia tones. Some were done with photos from Hawaiian friends.
http://www.kathysart.com/gallery/galleries/gallery_hawaiian/hawaiian_index.html
With my books and magazine clips I also paint them loosely.. as if I am sketching with a pencil.. but I am not.. I am using a really big brush with oils on canvas. As I paint.. I LOOK FOR MORE COLOR.. if it is there slightly? I paint it in where I see it. To start with this you can manipulate a photo on your computer to saturate the colors more. In time you will see them more readily.
Matisse said to FEEL THE COLORS... I think of that every single time I paint.
Sometimes I go through my clips and books just for ideas.. I did that with my "In Search of Klimt" series. I find faces from somewhere else in my magazine clips or other books or my photo image files. I make no bones about it.. yes I am painting with some of Gustav Klimpts elements. A LOT of people do. I am moving past that series now though and probably will not be adding to that series. I guess I am tired of hearing that they look like Klimt. There are some very original elements to those paintings but people mostly note the Klimt likenesses.
The one landscape scene I did that is on that same website and under the Mermaid Baby category was done by piecing together elements taken from books and pictures and some actual flowers. I took pics of the real flowers .. I need that photo!
Two
I take photos of models and even myself.. well my husband does for me. I stink at photography. One thing I really ask him to try to do is get plenty of contrast. It the image is flooded with light.. who can see? I need color for my technique of sketching with oils on canvas too as I mentioned.
My Victorian Series was done like this.. those were all my friends. I set up a tea party and rented vintage costumes.
The Mermaid Baby is my granddaughter. She was wearing diapers but it was easy to add a tail. I looked in books and my magazine clippings to piece together a scene.
I have a blog that goes through my painting process for my Hawaiian Series, "ke ala o Pele" at http://www.artistwatch.blogspot.com
You have to go 'back' to see the progress forward on that website. I used a model for those. That is a very tame series but it is what was needed at the time.
I am doing a series of self portraits now... my husband has taken maybe 400 digitals of me so far. We have done 5 photo shoots. I know what I want from a model so it seems to be working for me.
Lastly.. I also sculpt. I made my living doing pottery for 20 years so I know clay. It was natural to do sculpture. I did take several classes in that. It teaches you more about the human face than anything! You start looking at people for the shape of their nose as they are talking.. too funny. If you can't find a class to go to get a book or video on it. I noticed that there are UTubes that have sculpture in action. Then you can ask me for tips as well about that if you are interested in trying it.
I have also read a lot of books on creativity. I have not always felt creative because of my need for photos. I NEVER do well in life drawing classes that art organizations offer, and have always dropped out. I have to really talk to myself as I am in constant tears thinking I am a no talent after these classes. I have a learning disability so when I am in a group setting I do even worse for some reason. I just don't SEE,, ya know? For doing sculpture though for the most part I MUST have a model. I use pics for those too but the best is a real model.
I have a few Squiddo lenes that are about creativity, with books, esp. "The Artist's Way" and "The Vein of Gold", which I have done. Music I love to help with the process and thoughts.

Aloha to you,
Kathy
PS.. another thing that was pivotal for me? When I was painting the Mermaid Baby I had a friend say that I should discover color. I only had my Hawaiian sepia toned paintings on the wall. There are books on color. A lot of them get way too tedious for me.. I feel like I am reading science. I just skim through them. The thing you want to absorb is what colors do to each other when next to one another and what colors you SEE first, second, etc. Like for instance.. yellow (unless manipulated to be drab or whatever) is the first color you see.. green that last. Another thing about yellow... when next to purple it shines brighter because purple is its complimentary color.

Kathy Ostman-Magnusen Bio
Background:I owned and operated my own souvenir pottery business. I had eight contracted workers and one full time shipper. Products were created, hand sculpt, wheel thrown and personalized to meet each clients specific needs. My company shipped to most National Parks, Disney World, J C Penny and over 1000 specialty shops all over the US. I completely understand deadlines. Most souvenirs are purchased for summer sales with a small window for re-orders. After 20 years in the souvenir business I decided to focus on my painting and sculpting.
My website is www.kathysart.com I am a figurative artist and illustrator. If you check out my website you will see that I am very prolific in oils. My paintings are collected worldwide. I also do sculpture. I have illustrated for Hay House Inc.,"Women Who Do Too Much" CARDS taken from Anne Wilson Schaef's book "Meditations for Women Who Do Too Much". I also illustrated for Neil Davidson, who was considered for the Pulitzer Prize in feature writing, and several other publications.
Education:
"I am a self taught artist."
I don't post my schools correct date of birth.... I always 'change' that info on every site I post on. smile.
Artist Statement:
I began my career at four years old, in the back seat of my parents car, as they travelled the countryside. I have been exhilarated and tormented by art ever since. I wake up in the morning and go to bed at night thinking about it.
I paint and sculpt women primarily; in their daily lives, in lives they might be afraid of, and in lives they wish they had. My goal has always remained the same; to hear them breathing and to know the passion I feel in my soul is met by theirs.
So I sing:
"Hold me close dear angel,
muster up a little tune,
and rock me like a serpent,
that rises to the moon."
In every single one of my paintings my objective is to 'know them' . To let each one reveal their own vision or message. I am often astounded as their presence unfolds & I am met with who they are. I then realize that who 'they' are, defines me as well. My hope is that my paintings & sculptures relate to you, their audience & that they give you the message you need for your own heart and soul.

"I, Pamela, am one of the luckiest girls in town! I have had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Kathy Ostman-Magnusen, a magnificent artist and poet. Kathy has worked in a variety of styles in many mediums. Her work can be wildly passionate, mystical, serene and all the shades of emotion in-between. Kathy's work focuses primarily on women; their lives, dreams, fears and desires. Her use of bold color and exquisite line clearly expresses the passion, strength and spirituality in women. Kathy's interest in the mystical world is evident in her paintings of fairies, angels and mermaids. Kathy's poetry is like magic and just as open and honest as her paintings. I hope you'll take a few moments to read some of her poems by clicking on the links at the bottom of this post. Without further ado, let's move on to the interview..."

Enigma-The Child in Us
"A Little Time For Pain - Pathetic Intrusion - 3 Days Grace and I'll Be Fine"

"A Little Time For Pain - Pathetic Intrusion - 3 Days Grace and I'll Be Fine"
Pain
three days grace
a little time
and I will be back to myself
again.
A little time for pain
pathetic intrusion
soon to be dismissed
perhaps not forgotten
completely
but the goddess in me will go on.
Three days of grace
pain will be on its way
out the back door
and out of my life.
Mourning and delving into the moment
sadness
inner reflection
women in pain
men in pain
we all feel that invisible solitude of heartache
in the darkness
late at night
some
times.
Such pitiful
immortal lyrics
toasting costumes
masks
traded in for new dresses
and a gilded cage.
Yet fighting those troubles
beautiful is the heart in time
once acceptance is sung
and ultimately
conquered
for the masterpiece
of a steadfast sign.
Sadness
exotic in so many ways
many a song has been sung under its
watchful days.
Dances with the devil
dances with drawings of angels
carved into the heart.
I am aware of secret tactics
whimsical angels of fantasy
perhaps disguised
dismissing coincidences
tis a dichotomy
bleeding.
Evil blessing a fairies song
goodness stoned
dismissed
denied
despite her wilting sighs?
Trees change within every season
telling me...
Do not cry.
Blessed be the changes of the moon
and how the earth keeps singing.
Rock me in the daylight
let me be inside the lions roar
lest I reach the end
within my sacred plight
unexplored.
Rescue me
tell me time is short
that's what history tells a wounded soldier.
Tell me then
before I shut that gate
lest I forget a devils pen might steal
mercy for my own self
and this majestic date.
I will plan the perfect end
battle the forces
combat the enemy
platitudes mend.
Strategies set
planned now with a warrior woman's
precision
I will scheme to save myself.
Three days
and I will be fine.
Pain
three days grace.
I will make a shoebox diarama
in the rain
one hundred umbrellas sheltering my cause
and in my stead for a weeping song
I will place at the feet
of every flower
a precious gemstone.
Blossoms to stand guard
for my swaying
confused at times
lowly heart.

A Dark Wanderer in a Free Obituary Search
A Dark Wanderer in a Free Obituary SearchI think sometimes I'll discover me
dark wanderer
in a free obituary search.
I'll find that I have gone past here
and found a different now.
Drawings of scorpions
and grim reaper drawings
gothic angel art?
I forgot to list their names.
I think it is because they sang
so darkly.
Neon Blue slept here
I feared she would.
She got tired of all those noises.
She got tired of all the screams
that made havoc in her mind.
Projected inappropriately
past those midnight walls
Lily heard her
letting them come out.
Lily and I
in the dark holding hands.
And will hear those memories
forever.
Grim reaper
grim reaper
on my walls
and in my bed
late at night
I hear you breathing.
Obituary searches found my name?
You have stained my heart
caused me forever to know sadness
despite tokens of good cheer
tiny angels will not rest here with ease.
Not for me and not for Lily
despite her well dressed protests.
It is with sadness
colored with regret
I hear her
and yet dear Lily
tiny angel
will forever point toward stars.
In the light I see her
still hopeful.
I always have.
And yet..
Moans come from the closet still.
I want to drag them out
wrap them in a blanket
suffocate their need of me
tie them to the other side
of somewhere I can't find again.
I want to become cold
become a calloused word.
Lily won't speak of it to her
she would not recall it anyway
not an honest story she'd remember.
Perfect not to admit to.
Who would?
I will hold back all those tainted fields.
No daisies
no roses planted with care
no little ponds I wished I could maintain
that would love me back
and lend comfort to a little girl.
In times of weakness
Yes, I think sometimes I'll discover me
dark wanderer
in a free obituary search.
I'll find that I have gone past here
and found a different now
yet I know one thing more
secrets shared
I will always find peace in Lily's arms.

I did not know of your deserted treasures.
I was in a clouded box.
I was the mask
in front of my own face.
I absorbed
only
what I was told to.
New days spawn ultimate miracles
spiders spin webs.
Tell the others
fairies and dragons
of their salvation though
I am still looking for mine.
Just a message to hold on to.
Give me a reprieve though
will you?
Set your mark inward for a change?
When you feel tempted to elaborate on falls
make them your own?
In return I'll stop painting your doorway.
I tried to reach you
but you were out.
Nothing new, or is it?
Blood from my mouth
a dragons voice in the hallway
thoughts of recovery
I guess for my sake alone.
Puddles on the sidewalk
no reason to hesitate
you never have before.
All of your belongings?

have been given to you.
I never knew them.
I whisper your name at night
and I confess
more often than not
I miss having something with your scent.
I hear me stupidly crying.
I will scrub off all those blemishes though.
Stop their complaints
how dare they?
I still put bandages on all their fingers
yet they still refuse to travel
much less dance.
Can you imagine?
Funny
I always thought I'd be more outgoing
at least not so damaged.
Not to worry though
I still reach for kisses
from distant planets.
If I don't find you again?
No forwarding address?
Or if you decide you will not call?
I will not be angry
not when all is said and done.
No, I won't.
I will forever think of you
fondly
and imagine you, fairies and dragons
dancing.

Interview With Me 3/22/09

Question:
-You have said that you search for Klimpt, have you satisfied that urge and perhaps moved beyond? Also, what is it about him that pulls you in that direction?
KOM Reply:
I am leaning away from my "In Search of Klimt" series. Time to paint some departures I think. My quest for the energy of Klimt has not tired though. As with most artists who paint figurative work, I find beauty is coupled with soul searching in the painting and sculpting women. Klimt will not be put aside entirely, who could tire of the of "The Kiss"? It evokes passion and tenderness at the same time.
It isn't just Klimt that I search for though, no, it is 'all' who seek to speak with clay; oils on canvas; drawings in the sand even. It is seeking the expressions of others that embrace their inner relationship with the adventure of creativity that I relate to. There is an intensity I feel in my being and want to release, as I ponder someone else who has succeeded an artistic performance of any kind. How they achieved that endeavor, be it Klimt, Leonardo da Vinci or even a 5 year old child who creates expression from the heart, is the dynamic that is most astounding. I feel there is value in every single gesture of creativity, knowing there is something to be learned from it, if I take the time to notice. Creativity is elusive if we don't continually notice it when it is right before out eyes.
Considering Gustav Klimt again; he eluded to erotica with his work, which is something I am doing with my "Primal Series". I am fortunate to be represented by Monkdogz Urban Art in New York, and thus I confer with the them, specifically Bob Hogge, about what direction I should take with my work. Bob stresses that the artist should push to feel more, do more, dance the dance, that they know is inside them and to "take 'risks' of failure with pleasure". Never considering the notion that there is a place of arrival. It is a growth process that will not end.
My website is outdated, but I keep it because the 'text' is a journey of discovery, that goes past colors that meet my brush. It is the abandonment of self and yet the paradoxical journey to find self. I am planning for an entirely new website to show my current work, rather than deleting the existing one, because of that journey expressed.
Question:
-Is there any other artist that have strongly influenced your work or your mindset?
KOM Reply:
I am a self taught artist, so as I mentioned, I take it all in, even people's work that I don't especially like for one reason or another. Art should bring the viewer into a sphere of wonder, which is what made da Vinci such an extraordinary role model, not just artists, but for all who long to know themselves, the world around them and beyond. He asked questions of himself, just like a child would do. He fed his curiosity by doing research on whatever met his fancy and felt captivated by the simple, because it revealed the nakedness of the complex, so that it might be understood.
Question:
-In experiencing a few forms of synesthesia, I find your cosmopolitan series very exciting, your colors and marks are musical and atmospheric, for many such successful colors come with great difficulty and some with natural ease. How is this process for you?
KOM Reply:
I painted in sepia tones for a long time... no color really. Some of those works are on my back pages within my website. One day a friend came by and talked to me about color and that I should try to use them again. I had never been all that great with color, but yes, I decided that I was pretty bored with browns and beiges. I began to read about color a bit and experiment. It was fun. Later I came across a quote by Matisse, who said to FEEL the color. Now, whenever I paint, before I begin, I actually ask Matisse to help me FEEL the colors. I do! Not as a ritual but as an honest request for some wild, cosmic wisdom. It is kind of funny because I am not all that fond of Matisse's work, but as I wrote above, I try to find value in all artistic expression. Ahh my Matisse, he gave me the treasure of a full array of new sensations to the eye. Colors began to surface everywhere for me after that. I look for as many colors as I can possibly find in anything and everything. I squeeze out their glory from every single tube of oil paint I have, onto my pallet. When I paint I try to fit ALL their brilliance somewhere, even if it is just a trace. Layers of colors onto previous ones, oft times create a patina effect, which has become my style that is found throughout all my different series. I guess you could say I fell in love with color.
Question:
-In looking at the gallery, you have several categories listed, which style/era/subject are you drawn to the most?
KOM Reply:
I have no plans of doing realism anymore. I feel that a lot of that is mere rendering. If I wanted that I might as well settle for a photograph. I use my painting, "Flight" from my "Passion Series" a lot, as kind of my online logo. I plan to use the 'dance' from that series, along with the intrigue of some sculptures of mine, that I recently recovered and blend that effort with my "Primal Series". Like Bob Hogge says though... I am allowing myself risks with that. I succumb to the dance that gives direction.. I succumb to that and the whispers of Matisse, da Vinci and of course Gustav Klimt.

Dark wanderers flooding the night
Celtic tattoos pasted on the moon
dark poetry looming the skyline
looking for free recipes
for dreaming.
I will follow you into the dark
music without lyrics
wedding toasts for the foolish
of folly
whenever you call me.
Angels and airwaves
ancient healing
finding their way to me
despite my loss of
internal exploration at times
my heart does beat for their caresses.
Give me ultimate pleasure
or little tunes of hope
free games
or a Potter Trailer
from Autumn to ashes
so flowers can sing
I will follow you into the dark.
Nothing is so soothing
as whispers in the dark
saying we'll be fine.
Dark Fairy
elusive blossom
brings me printable gifts
and unique birdhouses
pictures of kittens
cats adorned with jeweled collars
kitty beds with pink ribbons.
Isn't that a fairies duty?
Making sure the flowers are content
not held captive
so fairy tales come alive?
Gifts on our back porch
despite the odds of feeling neglected
whenever my name is forgotten?
Fantasy fairies meet the darkness
afraid
as they find out who their friends are
secret friends
meeting fantasy art of exotic women
while forever pretending
only to be within docile pages
of the tattered book left on the table.
Dark Fairy
a queen between the lines
let out of page 765.
Despite my attempts to draw her in
unafraid to meet the present
laced by melodies
a musician's friend
Dark Fairy steadied her eyes on prizes.
Strong for mere determinations sake
she rises to meet her buried pride.
Everyone knows she says
amused
all who become wild women will one day be
female super heroes.
And with that printed inside her book of tales
she met the flowers ransom.

- Wow! I am humbled, encouraged, and inspired by my visit here!
Now I am getting ready to build a lens interconnecting what I do and where to find it on the web and in the 3-D world. I am still reading this lens but I have 5'ved, favorited, and lensrolled it already.
Your comment on my lens drew me here at the perfect creative moment!

In every single one of my paintings my objective is to 'feel them breathing'. To let each one reveal their own vision or message. I am often astounded as their presence unfolds & I am met with who they are. I then realize that who 'they' are, defines me as well. My hope is that my paintings & sculptures relate to you, their audience & that they give you the message you need for your own heart and soul.

Austin Artist Joyce DiBona: upcoming shows in New York City and collaboration with International Curator/Director Pietro Franesi
Longtime Austin Artist Joyce DiBona will be one of fourteen artists featured at Monkdogz Urban Art in New York City for "Zephyr" July 17 through August 6, 2008. Monkdogz Urban Art is located in the heart of Chelsea, NYC. It is an International Gallery dedicated to showcasing cutting edge established and emerging artists:
"History has dictated that occasionally windows of opportunity open within the art world. In the 1930s, artists like Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock just to name a couple, were afforded a platform to exhibit their work in New York City. The reception worldwide was significant. Again, in the early 1970s, artists like Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring were afforded the same opportunity. We believe that as we go into the 21st century, the window opens once again but this time on a more international scale. The world today is very much a global village. Distances, time zones and different languages are no longer the barriers that they once were." www.monkdogz.com
Art Basel Miami 2008 : December 4-7, 2008
Joyce DiBona will be collaborating with Pietro Franesi on an installation for Art Basel Miami 2008.
Art Basel Miami Beach is the most important art show in the United States, a cultural and social highlight for the Americas. As the sister event of Switzerland's Art Basel, the most prestigious art show worldwide for the past 38 years, Art Basel Miami Beach combines an international selection of top galleries with an exciting program of special exhibitions, parties and crossover events featuring music, film, architecture and design. www.artbaselmiamibeach.com

Glass is the current medium that fuels my creative passion. My interest in glass began when I spent several years working at The Peltier Glass Company in Ottawa, Illinois, U.S.A. There I learned about the versatility and creative potential that glass has to offer. The possibilities are practically limitless. My abstract work in glass is an improvisation in which I seek form and emotion. I want the work to appear to "come alive." I think of it as the transfer of my life energy into the glass. That is what I want others to see and feel. The shapes I create transport my consciousness from the immediate, external world to an inner realm of symbols and emotions. It is there, in my subconscious, where my work derives its meaning.
Bjoern Eriksen -Denmark

http://www.monkdogz.com/Monkdogz%20Artist%20Links/artistsE.htm
Bjorn Eriksen is a mature artist, born in 1957. At the age of seven he was fascinated by Picasso's Guernica, in which the spirit shaped as a shaken and sad young person with a candle in his hand, together with a terrified, wounded horse, sees how a brutal bull, symbolizing the dominating oppressing powers of our time, has slain the future formed as a child. As a result, the mother cries out her sorrow and anger to the bull's face. The horse is Pegasus of the art and Eriksen has vanished into it and he has never returned. Can you stand beside your time? Yes! You can. You can be neutral. But then, how can you make anything but decorative and abstract geometric art. There is enough of this. But Eriksen has also sensed something: it is about holding on to the light and not give up on reality - though it is tough. The man who has fought the bull on the back of Pegasus is surely lying dead on the ground but with a little flower in his hand. He succeeded in making his art. How does Eriksen's flower look like? He paints in an expressive style that makes a strong impact. It consists of lonely faces. No wonder. Yet they deny to give up. Some hide behind masks. It is difficult to reveal yourself. One is looking to the sky saying "I don't care". But that is not enough for most of his faces.

"From Inside An Open Grave My Lily did Escape"

"From Inside An Open Grave My Lily did Escape"
Lily opened her eyes from sleeping
lest death take her ore
and rob her of her own breath
this grave
opened up toward hope.
Remembering all
in conflict
wound or victory
thus
Lily spoke:
"Let me be a snowflake
drift in the wind
connect with the atmosphere.
Solace
solace
floating till I reach another wound
past this one.
This one is too hard.
Healing.
Let me know that space
no one around
freedom to dance over oceans
feet never even touching
its liquid whispers
at all.
Yes
I want to fly that high.
I don't care what you say.
I met a sea lion once
he sang along with me
as I ran across the beach.
At first I felt afraid
as magic entered too close.
How could I possibly be that free?
And then?
I melted into it.
Not one other soul around
to deny me
my own tongue
worrisome
broken
setting boundaries
silent to forbidding
if only for a time.
Am I strong enough
To get that back?
Does the breeze tell me I'm OK?
Am I thirsty enough
to stretch past my own clauses?
Am I visible
to me
at all?
How black can the sea be?
How far is the sky?
Might I capture those stars?
How empty, how full
how long
how many times will I commit
to being my own self?
Stars do turn in different directions
within their same galaxy.
Perhaps I am too judgmental.
Wouldn't that be OK
for me too?
Choices to not just embrace
but become their living shadows.
The mystery combs my hair
cleans my body
brushes my teeth
scrapes every single barnacle
away
when I let it.
How lonely is that dragon
or is he in fact
really OK?
Has he gone on to march in parades
under the sea
without me?
Is it really true
what doubters say?
Silver Strand
forever glistening
I hear it still
and I need to
get back.
There is a sandcastle there
the tide cannot overtake it
the magic forever saved
deep inside
my mind.
Dragons yes
they live forever.
And everyone else is a lier.
In moment of doubt
transgressions plotted
escape crossed my mind.
It's maybe true
what insecurities say
I might just be addicted
to every unknown fall.
Unsure
standing still I see them
attaching themselves to me
stubborn on my face
will I ever recognize my soul?
Will I ever come up for air?
Masked rescuers died in the Fall
I saw them changing
their minds.
All of those promises
dropping to the ground
brown
raked up
and burned before winter.
Singing
earthquakes come here too.
I wanted to run
to that other side they talk about.
With blood in my ears
I realized
they were mistaken
plagued
by their own determination
that was actually indifferent
to love.
Because
oh
they forgot to be kind.
I thought that was the message.
No matter
a dragon awaits me
I felt him breathing
once
on the Silver Strand
Tis not a poor desert flower
in a jar.
No.
I set my table
candle lit
messages unmarred.
And each and every breath
I now take
reflects a sacred note.
My dragon lives forever
with in that grave and out."

My career has ALWAYS been art. It has up and downs, for creativity is a very tempestuous lover. Some days I hate it, but I cannot help myself. I succumb to its relentless outbursts that include too many colors to ignore. Not always perfect but always striving.
